‎THE CATULLAN REVOLUTION‎

‎W. Heffer & Sons Ltd. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1969. Softcover. 0852700067 . Yellowing to wraps. Small chip to base of spine. Clean text. ; 119 pages; Examining the revolution wrought by Catullus in Latin poetry this volume encapsulates the way in which principles of modern literary criticism could be applied to classical poetry without ditching the sound philological scholarship of the classical tradition. In its day this book led the way in showing the philogically trained student how to be a critic; equally it can show the critically trained student the importance of a sound philogical base today . ‎VITA VIGILIA EST Essays in Honour of Barbara Levick‎

‎Institute of Classical Studies. Very Good. 2008. Softcover. 1905670141 . Inscribed to scholar R. E. Fantham from one of the contributors Geraldine Herbert-Brown on ffep. Light creasing to corners of wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Pliny’s life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Pliny’s life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Pliny’s attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. ; Signed by Contributor . Institute of Classical Studies paperback‎

‎THE PLAY OF TEXTS AND FRAGMENTS Essays in Honour of Martin Cropp‎

‎Brill. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2009. Hardcover. 9004174737 . Minor shelfwear. Light bumps to one corner and along 1 edge. Else fine. ; Mnemosyne Supplements 314; 580 pages; This volume is arguably one of the most important studies of Euripides to appear in the last decade. Not only does it offer incisive examinations of many of Euripides' extant plays and their influence it also includes seminal examinations of a number of Euripides’ fragmentary plays. This approach represents a novel and exciting development in Euripidean studies since it is only very recently that the fragmentary plays have begun to appear in reliable and readily accessible editions. The book’s thirty-two contributors constitute an international 'who’s who' of Euripidean studies and Athenian drama and their contributions will certainly feature in the forefront of scholarly discourse on Euripides and Greek drama for years to come. . ‎AESCHYLUS: THE EARLIER PLAYS AND RELATED STUDIES‎

‎University of Toronto Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0802007961 . 0.75 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 194 pages; This volume complements D. J. Conacher's two earlier studies of Aeschylus Aeschylus' `Prometheus Bound' 1980 and Aeschylus' `Oresteia' 1987 and completes his literary commentary on the extant plays of Aeschylus. In two more general studies he reviews Aeschylus' dramatic uses of the chorus and of imagery. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Little has been published on the Roman family a subject of central importance to political as well as social history. It was the family that determined political power; it was within the family that the distinctive relationships of one citizen to another were forged and exemplified. The Family in Ancient Rome provides an overview of the state of research by presenting some of the most important work being done in this area. In addition to a survey of the literature on all aspects of the Roman family the book begins with a general picture of the main features of the family. More specialized essays deal with the legal evidence wills and property rights which were of particular importance for the position of women; with the link between property disposition dowry and divorce; with the authority of the male head of the household and its relation to political power; with the status of children born of unions between slaves and citizen; and with the rearing of and attitudes toward children. ; 288 pages; Isbn: 0801418739 . A few pages have light pencil notes. Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and creasing along top edge. ; 534 pages; This book explores the ways in which legal disputes were settled out of court in fourth-century BC Athens and in second-century BC Rome. DJ has light creasing to head of spine. ; Leicester-Nottingham Studies in Ancient Society 2; 324 pages; The ancient Greco-Roman world was a world full of cities: not of cities in the modern sense of massive conglomerations but in a distinctive sense of communities in which countryside was dominated by urban centre. Interest in the special relationship of town and country in the ancient world goes back to Max Weber and beyond. This volume of papers by influential archaeologists and historians seeks to bring together the two disciplines in exploring the city-country relationship and its impact on social political economic and cultural conditions in classical antiquity. ‎HELLENISTIC POETRY‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. 0198140401 . Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham in pencil with light pencil markings on a couple of pages. Very light shelfwear to book else fine. DJ spine is sunned with tears to top of DJ spine and a few small chips. ; Special Edition for Sandpiper books -- reprint of 1988 edition. In this study of the Hellenistic poets of the third century B. C. Hutchinson provides a much-needed picture of the poetry of the period while demonstrating its quality and vitality. The work of the Hellenistic poets in the third century BC has not only an important place in Greek literature but also a particular significance for Latin poetry. Hutchinson explores the works of such writers as Theocritus Callimachus and Apollonius of Rhodes--developing a generalconception of poetry that centers around the poets' handling of tone level and form--and offers a fresh analysis of the influence of Hellenistic poetry on the city of Rome. Despite much technical work on the texts and language of these authors - Theocritus Callimachus Apollonius Rhodius and others - previous literary criticism on most of the major figures is limited in quantity and scope. He explores the work of the individual writers in turn while developing a general conception of the poetry as a whole centred around the poets' handling of tone level and form. The book concludes with a fresh approach to the influence of Hellenistic poets in Rome. All quotations in Greek or Latin have been translated by the author. ; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 392 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover‎

‎LATIN LITERATURE FROM SENECA TO JUVENAL A Critical Study‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0198146906 . Minor shelfwear to boards. Light pencil markings to a few pages. ; 384 pages; G. O. Hutchinson explores central aspects of the period in Latin literature often depreciatingly termed 'Silver'. It is unusual in embracing both poetry and prose and in offering close literary discussion of a large number of particular passages. It is a selective and comparative study--throwing fresh light on the period as a whole on individual authors and on differences and affinities between genres. Most space is given to epic and tragedy and to the prose of Seneca and Tacitus; but Juvenal Martial the Younger Pliny and other authors are also treated. The author also considers large features of genre and relates these to fundamental elements of style and to the treatment of some vital themes. He gives the reader a feeling for this brilliant and extraordinary writing and a sense of the excitement and fascination of the literary period. All Latin in the text is translated. . ‎TRIALS OF CHARACTER The Eloquence of Ciceronian Ethos‎

‎The University of North Carolina Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. 0807817597 . Very light shelfwear to book else fine. Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham. Very light edgewear to DJ else fine. ; 0.88 x 9.48 x 6.38 Inches; 224 pages; By its very nature the art of oratory involves character. Verbal persuasion entails the presentation of a persona by the speaker that affects an audience for good or ill. In this book James May explores the role and extent of Cicero's use of ethos and demonstrates its persuasive effect. May discusses the importance of ethos not just in classical rhetorical theory but also in the social political and judicial milieu of ancient Rome and then applies his insights to the oratory of Cicero. Ciceronian ethos was a complex blend of Roman tradition Cicero's own personality and selected features of Greek and Roman oratory. More than any other ancient literary genre oratory dealt with constantly changing circumstances with a wide variety of rhetorical challenges. An orator's success or failure as well as the artistic quality of his orations was largely the direct result of his responses to these circumstances and challenges. Acutely aware of his audience and its cultural heritage and steeped in the rhetorical traditions of his predecessors Cicero employed rhetorical ethos with uncanny success. May analyzes individual speeches from four different periods of Cicero's career tracing changes in the way Cicero depicted character both his own and others' as a source of persuasion changes intimately connected with the vicissitudes of Cicero's career and personal life. He shows that ethos played a major role in almost every Ciceronian speech that Cicero's audiences were conditioned by common beliefs about character and finally that Cicero's rhetorical ethos became a major source for persuasion in his oratory. . ‎SIBYLS AND SIBYLLINE PROPHECY IN CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY‎

‎Routledge. Very Good- in Very Good dust jacket. 1988. First Edition. Hardcover. 0415003431 . Corners are bumped. Pen lines to margins on about 9 pages. Pencil markings on 2 other pages. Small chip to one corner of DJ. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Writing in pencil to front DJ flap. ; 236 pages; In antiquity a considerable number of books of prophecies went under the general title of "Sibylline Oracles". Rulers as significant as Augustus consulted them in time of danger or crisis for advice and prognoses. Increasing numbers of "ex post facto" prophecies laying a particular interpretation on facts of recent history came to be attributed to one of the mysterious Sibyls. Perhaps the most famous of these is the Cumaean Sibyl who guides the hero in the sixth book of Vergil's "Aeneid" . In fact she was somewhat unusual in her similiarity to other oracular prophetesses such as the Pythia. For where the latter prophesied in response to particular inquirers one of the distinguishing characteristics of Sibyls was that they composed discursive verses for distribution to the world at large. This Professor Parke's last book which was virtually complete on his death in 1986 is an account of a subject both rarely treated in recent decades and difficult to access for all but the most expert. In its pursuit of the sometimes elusive Sibyls it ranges from Heraclitus to Eusebius from Archaic Asia Minor to Christian Rome. This book should be of interest to undergraduates postgraduates and academics of classics. . Routledge hardcover‎

Textblock is foxed. ; 265 pages; What relationship if any do the stories preserved in ancient Greek legendary traditions have to real events and circumstances of the periods and places to which they ostensibly refer A wide range of answers to this question is to be found in the works of both popular and scholarly writers not only where it has been debated explicitly but also -and more frequently- where some kind of answer seems to be presupposed in the course of their general discussions of Greek literature and history.
