Slater, William J.
ROMAN THEATER AND SOCIETY E. Togo Salmon Papers I
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0472107216 . DJ spine is lightly sunned. ; Roman Theater & Society; 9.75 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 200 pages; William Slater's new volume Roman Theater and Society brings an important perspective to the much-maligned status of the Roman theater which has only recently been reappraised and appreciated as uniquely Roman rather than criticized for not being Greek. From this point of embarkation William Slater and the nine contributors discuss theater in Rome and the Greek east with a definition of performance incorporating not only stage performances but also dinnertime entertainment sporting events and political events. Contributors are T. D. Barnes K. M. Coleman J. C. Edmonson E. R. Gebhard J. R. Green E. J. Jory W. D. Lebek and D. S. Potter. Individual chapters combine literary evidence with archaeological thereby engendering a deeper appreciation for the social and political roles of Roman theater. It becomes clear that these roles were of great influence in giving voice to the popular demands of the average Roman. In examining the roles of theater the contributors turn to the players and audience themselves for deeper understanding. . University of Michigan Press hardcover

Frier Bruce W.
LIBRI ANNALES PONTIFICUM MAXIMORUM The Origins of the Annalistic Tradition
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0472109154 . A couple of small tears to bottom corners of DJ else Fine. ; The Papers and Monographs of the American Academy in Rome; 368 pages; Recent years have seen a welcome growth of interest in the history of early Rome. Libri Annales Pontificum Maximorum: the Origins of the Annalistic Tradition contributes important information on this period by focusing on the earliest stages of Roman historical writing. The book is once again available with a new Introduction by the author that brings the work up to date and helps place it in its current context. This book remains the starting point for study of the pre-annalistic tradition of Roman history. When first published the volume sparked a lively debate among classicists and historians of the ancient world. Previous scholarship had often assigned the pontifical chronicle a central role not only in preserving the history of the early Republic but also in shaping the form of the annalistic tradition. But the author showed that these assumptions rested on insecure foundations; to a large extent they misrepresented the historiographic development of the annalistic tradition as we know it from above all Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Perhaps the book's most controversial contention was that the final eighty-book edition of the chronicle which previous scholars had dated to the later second century BCE is more probably a massive reworking of materials in the Augustan period. This finding will likely require a considerable revision in our understanding of the development of the annalistic tradition. In the course of making these innovative arguments the author offers extensive information about the origins of the annalistic tradition and about the early history and historiography of Rome. Bruce W. Frier is Professor of Classics and Roman Law and Henry King Ransom Professor of Law University of Michigan. He has published numerous books and articles on classical and legal topics and has won the Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit from the American Philological Association. . Talbert R. J. A.
TIMOLEON AND THE REVIVAL OF GREEK SICILY 344-317 B.C.
Cambridge University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1974. Hardcover. 0521204194 . DJ is price-clipped. Light spotting to DJ. Slight sticker remnants to back panel. Very light foxing to textblock. ; 246 pages; Dispatched to Sicily in 344 BC as an elderly man at the head of a small motley band of mercenaries Timoleon had no experience of the island. Yet in less than eight years Timoleon overthrew tyrants expelled the Carthaginians and introduced peace prosperity and constitutional government to an area which for decades had known only disorder. The peace he had brought was broken after his death and tyranny returned in 317 BC; but the prosperity which he had set in motion continued to increase well into the third century. Dr Talbert has deliberately avoided the temptation to write a biography and has confined himself to coverage of those aspects of Timeleon's work for which some evidence survives. He examines closely the uneven and frequently eulogistic accounts left by ancient writers. He also discusses fully the light thrown on Timoleon's revival by the discovery of numerous silver coin hoards in Sicily and by archaeological excavations undertaken there since the Second World War. His studies add up to a most thorough investigation of Timoleon's work. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE MACEDONIAN STATE The Origins Institutions and History
Oxford University Press. Very Good. 1992. Softcover. 0198149271 . Bottom corner is slight bumped. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.97 x 9.23 x 6.24 Inches; 440 pages; In 338 BC Philip II of Macedon established Macedonian rule over Greece; he was succeeded in 336 by his son Alexander the Great whose conquests in the twelve years that followed reached as far as the Russian steppes Afghanistan and the Punjab and created the Hellenistic world. The study of Macedonia is now a growing point in ancient history. The first ever history of ancient Macedonia has now been completed in three volumes by N. G. L. Hammond helped by G. T. Griffith and F. W. Walbank. On the basis of that work Professor Hammond now provides in one volume a history of the Macedonian state and its institutions both in Europe and in the Hellenistic kingdoms in Asia and Egypt on which much new light has been shed by epigraphic and archaeological discoveries. Those institutions have had a profound influence on subsequent history. Full references are given to the ancient sources of information and to archaeological numismatic and epigraphic articles. .
