EURIPIDES AND THE POETICS OF NOSTALGIA
Cambridge University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0521858739 . 0.94 x 9.06 x 6.69 Inches; 278 pages; Branded by critics from Aristophanes to Nietzsche as sophistic iconoclastic and sensationalistic Euripides has long been held responsible for the demise of Greek tragedy. Despite this reputation his drama has a fundamentally conservative character. It conveys nostalgia for an idealized age that still respected the gods and traditional codes of conduct. Using deconstructionist and feminist theory this book investigates the theme of the lost voice of truth and justice in four Euripidean tragedies. The plays' unstable mix of longing for a transcendent voice of truth and skeptical analysis not only epitomizes the discursive practice of Euripides' era but also speaks to our postmodern condition. The book sheds new light on the source of the playwright's tragic power and enduring appeal revealing the surprising relevance of his works for our own day. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD IN LATE ANTIQUITY AD 395-600
Routledge. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0415014204 . Minor bump to top corner. Dustjacket has minor rubbing. ; "The Mediterranean World in Late Antiquity: AD 395-600" deals with the period commonly known as "late antiquity" - the fifth and sixth centuries. The Roman Empire in the west was splitting into separate Germanic kingdoms while the Near East still under Roman or Byzantine rule from Constantinople maintained a dense population and flourishing urban culture until the Persian and Arab invasions of the early seventh century. The book is intended for teachers and students in both ancient and medieval history. Averil Cameron places her emphasis on the material and literary evidence for cultural change and offers a new and original challenge to traditional assumptions of "decline and fall" and "the end of antiquity". The book draws on the recent spate of scholarship on this period to discuss in detail controversial issues such as the capacity of the late Roman army the late antique city and the nature of economic exchange and cultural life. With its extensive annotation it provides a lively and often critical introduction to earler approaches to the period. Contents: 1. Constantinople and the eastern empire in the fifth century 2. The empire the barbarians and the late Roman army 3. Church and society 4. Late Roman social structures and the late Roman economy. 5. Justinian and reconquest 6. Culture and mentality 7. Urban change and the end of Antiquity 8. The Eastern Mediterranean-- settlement and change. ; Routledge History of the Ancient World; 1 x 1 x 5.75 Inches; 251 pages . Routledge hardcover

THE ROMAN NEAR EAST 31 BC - AD 337
Harvard University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0674778855 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Minor bumping to head of spine. ; Carl Newell Jackson Lectures; 9.5 x 1.5 x 6.75 Inches; 624 pages; From Augustus to Constantine the Roman Empire in the Near East expanded step by step southward to the Red Sea and eastward across the Euphrates to the Tigris. In a remarkable work of interpretive history Fergus Millar shows us this world as it was forged into the Roman provinces of Syria Judaea Arabia and Mesopotamia. His book conveys the magnificent sweep of history as well as the rich diversity of peoples religions and languages that intermingle in the Roman Near East. Against this complex backdrop Millar explores questions of cultural and religious identity and ethnicity--as aspects of daily life in the classical world and as part of the larger issues they raise. As Millar traces the advance of Roman control he gives a lucid picture of Rome's policies and governance over its far-flung empire. He introduces us to major regions of the area and their contrasting communities bringing out the different strands of culture communal identity language and religious belief in each. The Roman Near East makes it possible to see rabbinic Judaism early Christianity and eventually the origins of Islam against the matrix of societies in which they were formed. Millar's evidence permits us to assess whether the Near East is best seen as a regional variant of Graeco-Roman culture or as in some true sense oriental. A masterful treatment of a complex period and world distilling a vast amount of literary documentary artistic and archaeological evidence--always reflecting new findings--this book is sure to become the standard source for anyone interested in the Roman Empire or the history of the Near East. . THE CHORUSES OF SOPHOKLES' ANTIGONE AND PHILOKTETES Dance of Words
Brill Academic Publishers. Fine with no dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 9004165142 . Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Mnemosyne Supplements. Monographs on Greek and Roman Language and Literature; 0.6 x 9.7 x 6.4 Inches; 146 pages; Dance of Words argues for a fundamental difference in the modes of expression of actor and chorus. The chorus views the action from the perspective of dancers and singers while the actors' understanding is shaped by the responsibility they have to make things happen. While this responsibility fashions the actors' considerations of cause and effect linear movement through time and space and a sense of history the chorus' sensibilities arise out of the rhythms of its song and movements. Its mode of expression is a particular way of communicating and elaborating on man's place in the larger order and its view of the action is bounded by the way that song and dance mirror that order. . AN HISTORICAL COMMENTARY ON THE HELLENICA OXYRHYNCHIA
Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. 0521043522 . Book has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources chronology bias interest in causation etc. The introduction ends with a résumé of the numerous theories of the author's identity Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all. The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE CITIES OF SELEUKID SYRIA
Oxford Clarendon Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0198146949 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.02 x 8.5 x 5.67 Inches; 264 pages; This book is the first detailed study of the foundation history government growth and decline of the cities founded in Syria by Seleukos I in 301BC shortly after the time of Alexander the Great. It throws new light on an important period in ancient history. In particular Dr Grainger concentrates on the relationship between the kings and the cities in their kingdoms and reveals that former theories concerning such a relationship require drastic revision. Most importantly the relationship is shown to have been much more to the kings' advantage than previous discussions on Hellenistic states have supposed. He argues in fact that neither the kings nor the cities intended the cities to be autonomous or independent since they were far too reliant on royal support against the enmity of the surrounding population. Evidence for this can be seen in the actions of the cities on the collapse of the Seleukid dynasty in the first century BC; then they were forced to cast about for a new protector and eventually accepted Rome albeit reluctantly. Dr Grainger discusses the differing fate of the cities during this process when some failed altogether most declined and only one Antioch prospered. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

THE MACEDONIAN STATE The Origins Institutions and History

Top corner of wrap has slight tear. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.97 x 9.23 x 6.24 Inches; 440 pages; In 338 BC Philip II of Macedon established Macedonian rule over Greece; he was succeeded in 336 by his son Alexander the Great whose conquests in the twelve years that followed reached as far as the Russian steppes Afghanistan and the Punjab and created the Hellenistic world. The study of Macedonia is now a growing point in ancient history. The first ever history of ancient Macedonia has now been completed in three volumes by N. G. L. Hammond helped by G. T. Griffith and F. W. Walbank. On the basis of that work Professor Hammond now provides in one volume a history of the Macedonian state and its institutions both in Europe and in the Hellenistic kingdoms in Asia and Egypt on which much new light has been shed by epigraphic and archaeological discoveries. Those institutions have had a profound influence on subsequent history. Full references are given to the ancient sources of information and to archaeological numismatic and epigraphic articles. . THE POLITICS OF PEARL Court Poetry in the Age of Richard II
D. S. Brewer. Good with no dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0859915999 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. 'Write-off' has been stamped to top of textblock. Book appears unread. Very light shelfwear. ; 0.63 x 9.21 x 6.14 Inches; 264 pages; This is an entirely new and original reading of 'Pearl' placing the anonymous masterpiece in the context of the Cheshire coterie that flourished at the court of Richard II during the 1390s. The brilliance of its poetic construction has long been acknowledged but here 'Pearl' is also shown to engage with the social religious and political events of the late fourteenth century. The poem's defense of infant baptism is seen as countering Lollard criticism of the sacraments its retelling of the Parable of the Vineyard as offering scriptural support to the aims of the Statute of Labourers. The poem's dazzling representation of aristocratic magnificence - jewelled crowns gem-embroidered gowns livery badges civic processions and monumental architecture - studied in this context relates to the spectacular royal culture of one of England's most ambitious monarchs. The courtly elegy offered consolation after the death of Anne of Bohemia while its vision of a royal child-bride figured in the intense national debate over the king's prospective marriage to the six-year-old Isabelle of France. Richard II's fall from power brought to an end not simply Cheshire privilege but also a poetic tradition that produced some of the finest works of English literature most notably 'Pearl' and 'Gawain and the Green Knight'. . It is also a complex period of co-operation and rivalry between a number of co-emperors the result of Diocletian's experiment of government by four rulers the tetrarchs. This book examines imperial government at this crucial but often neglected period of transition through a study of the the pronouncement that the emperors and their officials produced drawing together material from a wide variety of sources: the law codes Christian authors inscritpions and papyri. The study covers the format composition and promulgation of documents and includes chronological catalogues of imperial letters and edicts as well as extended discussions of the Gregorian and Hermogenian Codes and the ambitious Prices Edict. Much of this has had little detailed coverage in English before. There is also a chapter that elucidates the relative powers of the members of the imperial college. Finally Dr Corcoran assesses how effectively the machinery of government really matched the ambitions of the emperors. . Oxford University Press hardcover

Morison, Stanley
POLITICS AND SCRIPT Aspects of Authority and Freedom in the Development of Graeco-Latin Script from the Sixth Century B. C. to the Twentieth Century A. D.
Oxford Clarendon Press. Good in Good dust jacket. 1972. Hardcover. 0198181469 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and institution plates. DJ is protected in plastic. Dustjacket has edgewear with minor chipping and a few tears some repaired with adhesive tape. ; The Lyell lectures; 361 pages; The central argument of Stanley Morison's work is that the development of script inscriptional calligraphic or typographical has been the result of changes in religious or political environment of friction between church and state and of the schism between Eastern and Western Christendom. Morison begins with an example of alphabetic forms on a 6th century BC gravestone from Melos and proceeds through commentary on a notable collection of more than 180 illustrated specimens to trace the career of the Graeco-Roman alphabet up to its use in newspaper typefaces of the 1950s. He also seeks to show that the most widely used printers' typefaces of the twentieth century owe more to their Greek than to their Roman antecedents. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

Staples, Ariadne
FROM GOOD GODDESS TO VESTAL VIRGINS Sex and Category in Roman Religion
Routledge. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0415132339 . Very minor edgewear to top corners of DJ else Fine. ; 0.79 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 207 pages; The role of women in Roman culture and society was a paradoxical one. They enjoyed social material and financial independence yet they were denied basic constitutional rights. Although Roman history is not short of powerful female figures such as Agrippina and Livia their power stemmed from their associations with great men and was not officially recognized. Ariadne Staples' book examines how women in Rome were perceived both by themselves and by men through women's participation in Roman religion as Roman religious ritual provided the single public arena where women played a significant formal role. From Good Goddess to Vestal Virgins argues that the ritual roles played out by women were vital in defining them sexually and that these sexually defined categories spilled over into other aspects of Roman culture including political activity. Staples provides an arresting and original analysis of the role of women in Roman society which challenges traditionally held views and provokes further questions. . Routledge hardcover
