The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. In the first in-depth study of oratorical gestures and crowd acclamations as methods of communication at public spectacles Gregory Aldrete sets out to recreate these vital missing components and to recapture the original context of ancient spectacles as interactive dramatic and contentious public performances. At the most basic level this work is a study of communication -- how Roman speakers communicated with their audiences and how audiences in turn were able to reply and convey their reactions to the speakers. Aldrete begins by investigating how orators employed an extraordinarily sophisticated system of hand and body gestures in order to enhance the persuasive power of their speeches. He then turns to the target of these orations -- the audience -- and examines how they responded through the mechanism of acclamations that is rhythmically shouted comments. Aldrete finds much in these ancient spectacles that is relevant to modern questions of political propaganda manipulation of public image crowd behavior and speechmaking. This close study of the language and rhetorical context of the prophecies reveals that they regularly suppress discouraging material: the gods send promising messages to Aeneas and others to spur them on in their struggles but these struggles often lead to untimely deaths or other disasters only darkly hinted at by the prophecies. O'Hara finds in these prophecies a persistent subtext that both stresses the human cost of Aeneas' mission and casts doubt on Jupiter's promise to Venus of an "endless empire" for the Romans. O'Hara considers the major prophecies that look confidently toward Augustus' Rome from the standpoint of Vergil's readers who like the characters within the poem must struggle with the possibility that the optimism of the prophecies of Rome is undercut by darker material partially suppressed. The study shows that Vergil links the deception of his characters to the deceptiveness of Roman oratory politics and religion and to the artifice of poetry itself. First published in German in 1977 it has now been translated into English with the assistance of the author himself. A clearly structured and readable survey for students and scholars it will be welcomed as the best modern account of any polytheistic religious system. Burkert draws on archaeological discoveries insights from other disciplines and inscriptions in Linear B to reconstruct the practices and beliefs of the Minoan-Mycenaean age. The major part of his book is devoted to the archaic and classical epochs. He describes the various rituals of sacrifice and libation and explains Greek beliefs about purification. He investigates the inspiration behind the great temples at Olympia Delphi Delos and the Acropolis - discussing the priesthood sanctuary and oracles. Considerable attention is given to the individual gods the position of the heroes and beliefs about the afterlife. The different festivals are used to illuminate the place of religion in the society of the city-state. The mystery cults at Eleusis and among the followers of Bacchus and Orpheus are also set in that context. The book concludes with an assessment of the great classical philosophers' attitudes to religion. Insofar as possible Burkert lets the evidence -- from literature and legend vase paintings and archaeology -- speak for itself; he elucidates the controversies surrounding its interpretation without glossing over the enigmas that remain. Throughout the notes updated for the English-language edition afford a wealth of further references as the text builds up its coherent picture of what is known of the religion of ancient Greece. .
