PORPHYRY: THE HOMERIC QUESTIONS A Bilingual Edition
Peter Lang Publishing. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0820416061 . Spine a bit sunned. Else fine. ; Lang Classical Studies; 98 pages; Porphyry's Homeric Questions was written in the 3rd century A. D. In response to a friend's request that the philosopher try to recall some of their leisure discussions about problems arising from their readings of Homer. Such literary discussions were commonplace among the educated in antiquity and survive in several works from that period. While Aristotle's Homeric Problems has been lost fragments do survive as does a solution offered by Alexander the Great. Most of the discussion in Porphyry concern the meanings of words and phrases but some turn to appreciations of the poet's art such as simile and metaphor discussions which at times anticipate modern criticism. The present work is a translation with notes and a brief preface to the philosopher's labor of love. . Peter Lang Publishing hardcover

AS WITNESSED BY IMAGES The Trojan War Tradition in Greek and Etruscan Art
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 0801887755 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 248 pages; What informed and inspired the visual artists who depicted the Trojan War on vases on walls and in sculpture Scholars have debated this question for years. Were Greek painters simply depicting the stories of Achilles and Odysseus as recounted in Homer's epics Or did they work independently following their own traditions without regard to the Iliad the Odyssey and other poetry of their time Steven Lowenstam offers here an alternative theoretical framework arguing that Greek artists and poets interacted with each other freely always aware of what the others were producing. As Trojan War myth was the common inheritance of all Greek storytellers verbal and visual depictions of heroic myth were not created in isolation but were interdependent responses to a centuries-old tradition. As Witnessed by Images investigates visual depictions of Achillean and Odyssean myth from ca. 650-300 BCE and traces the many messages that the stories of Achilles and Odysseus inspired. Lowenstam identifies a variety of images and interpretations -- some regarded Achilles as a hero others believed him to be a cruel bully -- that reflect and directly respond to the ancient heroic tradition from which the Iliad and Odyssey evolved. . CHAPMAN'S HOMER 2 VOLUME SET Volumes 1 and 2: the Iliad the Odyssey and the Lesser Homerica. Edited with Introductions Textual Notes Commentaries and Glossaries.

Very minor chipping to djs. Dustjackets are protected in plastic sleeves. ; Bollingen Series XLI; George Chapman's translations of Homer are the most famous in the English language. Keats immortalized the work of the Renaissance dramatist and poet in the sonnet "On First Looking into Chapman's Homer." Swinburne praised the translations for their "romantic and sometimes barbaric grandeur" their "freshness strength and inextinguishable fire." The great critic George Saintsbury 1845-1933 wrote: "For more than two centuries they were the resort of all who unable to read Greek wished to know what Greek was. Chapman is far nearer Homer than any modern translator in any modern language." This volume presents the original 1611 text of Chapman's translation of the Iliad making only a small number of modifications to punctuation and wording where they might confuse the modern reader. The editor Allardyce Nicoll provides an introduction and a glossary. Garry Wills contributes a preface in which he explains how Chapman tapped into the poetic consonance between the semi-divine heroism of the Iliad's warriors and the cosmological symbols of Renaissance humanism. . RESTRAINING RAGE The Ideology of Anger Control in Classical Antiquity
Harvard University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 2001. Hardcover. 0674006186 . Very faint shelfwear Else book is fine. DJ has light edgewear with a bit of creasing. Dustjacket is protected in plastic sleeve. ; The angry emotions and the problems they presented were an ancient Greek preoccupation from Homer to late antiquity. From the first lines of the Iliad to the church fathers of the fourth century A. D. the control or elimination of rage was an obsessive concern. From the Greek world it passed to the Romans. Drawing on a wide range of ancient texts and on recent work in anthropology and psychology Restraining Rage explains the rise and persistence of this concern. W. V. Harris shows that the discourse of anger-control was of crucial importance in several different spheres in politics--both republican and monarchical--in the family and in the slave economy. He suggests that it played a special role in maintaining male domination over women. He explores the working out of these themes in Attic tragedy in the great Greek historians in Aristotle and the Hellenistic philosophers and in many other kinds of texts. From the time of Plato onward educated Greeks developed a strong conscious interest in their own psychic health. Emotional control was part of this. Harris offers a new theory to explain this interest and a history of the anger-therapy that derived from it. He ends by suggesting some contemporary lessons that can be drawn from the Greek and Roman experience. ; 480 pages . Harvard University Press hardcover

THE MADNESS OF EPIC Reading Insanity from Homer to Statius
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0198152450 . Very faint foxing to top of textblock else book is fine. Dustjacket is protected in plastic sleeve. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 1.3 x 8.7 x 5.6 Inches; 360 pages; Madness plays a vital role in many ancient epics: not only do characters go mad but madness also often occupies a central thematic position in the texts. In this book Debra Hershkowitz examines from a variety of theoretical angles the representation and poetic function of madness in Greek and Latin epic from Homer through the Flavians including individual chapters devoted to the Iliad and Odyssey Virgil's Aeneid Ovid's Metamorphoses Lucan's Bellum Civile and Statius' Thebaid. The study also addresses the difficulty of defining madness and discusses how each epic explores this problem in a different way finding its own unique way of conceptualizing madness. Epic madness interacts with ancient models of madness but also even more importantly with previous representations of madness in the literary tradition. Likewise the reader's response to epic madness is influenced by both ancient and modern views of madness as well as by an awareness of intertextuality. . Oxford University Press hardcover

A STUDY OF SOPHOCLEAN DRAMA
Cornell University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1958. Hardcover. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Spine lightly sunned. Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. ; Although many commentators have dealt with various aspects of structure in Sophoclean drama G. M. Kirkwood contends that "Sophocles' mastery of dramatic form is accepted with casual and superficial deference rather than fully and clearly understood." This book shows how Sophocles' method of presenting character his unique handling of myth his predilection for presenting ideas by comparison and contrast and his principles of structure are so closely related that they serve to clarify each other. In an analysis of the form of Sophocles' seven extant plays Kirkwood demonstrates the existence of several deliberate and distinct types of dramatic construction. Sophocles' use of the chorus his irony and certain aspects of diction are considered as a part of his dramatic art and as elements of structure. Kirkwood discusses a number of traditional problems among them questions of consistency and meaning in passages from Ajax Antigone and Electra. He also considers the problem of "diptych" structure and shows that it is a definite dramatic shape of primary importance in understanding the three plays in which it appears. ; Cornell Studies in Classical Philology Vol. 31; 328 pages .
