‎Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1978. Hardcover. 0198148259 . Book has very light shelfwear else fine. DJ is price-clipped. DJ spine a bit sunned. ; This brief and compressed study comprises twelve self-contained chapters and begins by proposing a revised chronology for several works of Ovid. The central theme is Roman social history in the time of Caesar Augustus revealing Ovid in his milieu and in the ambit of his friendships. Attention is concentrated on the poems from exile especially the four books of Epistulae ex Ponto which reveal much more than previously suspected about the last decade of the reign of Augustus. Finally writing on Ovid's exile Syme argues that it was not the result of a misdemeanour by the poet but the blunder of an angry despot-- the error of Caesar Augustus. ; 240 pages . ‎Routledge. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0415042305 . Very minor shelfwear to book. Small chips to top of spine. DJ has creasing and 1 tear repaired with clear tape along upper edge. ; 2 x 10 x 8 Inches; 340 pages; Roman epic lays firm claim to being Western civilization's prime literary form. Roman Epic draws together 14 critically and methodologically distinct essays focusing on particular epicists their reaction to influence on and rewriting of each other. The book examines the formation and transformation of Roman epic from its beginnings in the third century B. C. Saturnian poets Livius and Naevius to the Renaissance Latin epic of Petrarch and Vida. What results is the revelation of Roman epic not only as Rome's highest poetic genre but as a self-consciously intertextual primarily political form. The Roman epicist's creative exploitation of his predecessors is not restricted to stylistic similarities and generic codes but often encompasses more important levels of social moral and political meaning. In the Roman tradition the epic form shows an impetus to reform the celebratory values implicit in the form itself admitting a plurality of interactive often critical narrative voices. This book reveals how the epic developed and critically considers the generic and literary tradition to which the texts belong. It demonstrates epic's critical significance for the foundational culture of the Western world. . Routledge hardcover‎

Pen markings to top pages of Latin Text. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 294 pages; With the exception of a poem on the unscripted death of a lion in the Colosseum Book II of Statius' Silvae is largely domestic in theme. It reflects the more private side of Roman culture its pleasures houses gardens friendships and personal losses; it concludes with a provocative tribute to the poet Lucan. Despite its variety the book is carefully constructed as a unit and this edition which is suitable for use with advanced students puts the book into its context in the history of Greek and Roman poetry. The commentary takes into account the important work done on the text of the Silvae in the past two decades as well as the new perspectives brought to bear on Flavian culture by historians and archaeologists. It explores Statius' use of the short poem as a playful engagement with literary tradition that also reflects changing ideas of Roman cultural identity. ; Signed by Editor . ‎THE STAGECRAFT AND PERFORMANCE OF ROMAN COMEDY‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0521861616 . Very light bump to 1 corner. DJ has minor shelfwear. Scholar's small bookplate to ffep R. E. Fantham. ; A comprehensive survey of Roman theatrical production this book examines all aspects of Roman performance practice and provides fresh insights on the comedies of Plautus and Terence. Following an introductory chapter on the experience of Roman comedy from the perspective of Roman actors and the Roman audience addressing among other things the economic concerns of putting on a play in the Roman republic subsequent chapters provide detailed studies of troupe size and the implications for role assignment masks stage action music and improvisation in the plays of Plautus and Terence. Marshall argues that Roman comedy was raw comedy much more rough-and-ready than its Hellenistic precursors but still fully conscious of its literary past. The consequences of this lead to fresh conclusions concerning the dramatic structure of Roman comedy and a clearer understanding of the relationship between the plays-as-text and the role of improvisation during performance. ; 336 pages . ‎Johns Hopkins University Press. Near Fine. 2014. Hardcover. 1421411296 . Very faint rubbing to boards else fine. ; Quintus Ennius often considered the father of Roman poetry is best remembered for his epic poem the Annals a history of Rome from Aeneas until his own lifetime. Ennius represents an important bridge between Homers works in Greek and Vergils Aeneid. Jay Fisher argues that Ennius does not simply translate Homeric models into Latin but blends Greek poetic models with Italic diction to produce a poetic hybrid. Fisher's investigation uncovers a poem that blends foreign and familiar cultural elements in order to generate layers of meaning for his Roman audience. Fisher combines modern linguistic methodologies with traditional philology to uncover the influence of the language of Roman ritual kinship and military culture on the Annals. Moreover because these customs are themselves hybrids of earlier Roman Etruscan and Greek cultural practices not to mention the customs of speakers of lesser-known languages such as Oscan and Umbrian the echoes of cultural interactions generate layers of meaning for Ennius his ancient audience and the modern readers of the fragments of the Annals. ; 224 pages . Goldberg treats the creators of these now-fragmentary works not simply as predecessors of Vergil but as pioneers and poets in their own right. But Goldberg goes beyond practical criticism exploring in the literary experiments of Andronicus Naevius Ennius and Cicero issues of poetry and patronage cultural assimilation and national ideology modeling and originality that both come to characterize Roman literature of all periods and continue to shape modern responses to that literature. What emerges from Goldberg's study is both a fresh perspective on Vergil's achievement and new insights into the cultural dynamics of second-century Rome. ; 196 pages; Signed by Author . ‎RESTRAINING RAGE The Ideology of Anger Control in Classical Antiquity‎

‎Harvard University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 0674006186 . Very faint bump to 1 corner else book is fine. DJ has light edgewear with a bit of creasing. ; The angry emotions and the problems they presented were an ancient Greek preoccupation from Homer to late antiquity. From the first lines of the Iliad to the church fathers of the fourth century A. D. the control or elimination of rage was an obsessive concern. From the Greek world it passed to the Romans. Drawing on a wide range of ancient texts and on recent work in anthropology and psychology Restraining Rage explains the rise and persistence of this concern. W. V. Harris shows that the discourse of anger-control was of crucial importance in several different spheres in politics--both republican and monarchical--in the family and in the slave economy. He suggests that it played a special role in maintaining male domination over women. He explores the working out of these themes in Attic tragedy in the great Greek historians in Aristotle and the Hellenistic philosophers and in many other kinds of texts. From the time of Plato onward educated Greeks developed a strong conscious interest in their own psychic health. Emotional control was part of this. Harris offers a new theory to explain this interest and a history of the anger-therapy that derived from it. He ends by suggesting some contemporary lessons that can be drawn from the Greek and Roman experience. ; 480 pages . Harvard University Press hardcover‎

Faint creasing along upper edge of DJ. ; Proceedings of the Cambridge Philological Society Supplementary Volume 31; Vol. 31; 172 pages; Ennius Perennis: the Annals and Beyond is a collection of eight essays by an international group of scholars on different aspects of the poetry and legacy of Quintus Ennius 239-169 BC. Ennius' epic poem the Annals and his many other works including tragedies satires and epigrams survive only in mystifying fragments but his influence on Latin poetry was enormous. He is now beginning to be appreciated thanks both to excellent critical editions and to more enlightened literary and historical approaches as a complex and varied poet and a fascinating representative of an era of intense cultural and political change. While they acknowledge the extent to which later authors are responsible for creating a misleading perception of Ennius as monolithic jingoistic and clumsy these essays also reflect on what can be said about the nature and aims of his work given the limitations of our evidence. Subjects discussed include Cicero's "invention" of Ennius the part played by the cor heart in unifying Ennius' literary project the possibility of "further voices" and a role for women in Ennius Virgil's fraught "father-son" relationship with his epic predecessor and Ennius' later reincarnation in the works of Horace and Petrarch. The collection is likely to appeal to all who are interested in Latin literature literary history or reception studies. . Cambridge Philological Society hardcover‎

Book has very minor shelfwear. ; In this book James Sickinger explores the use and preservation of public records especially laws and decrees in the ancient Athenian democracy of the archaic and classical periods. This book challenges the growing orthodoxy in classical scholarship that characterizes Athenian literacy and record keeping as crude and primitive before the fourth century B. C. It argues instead that the practical use and preservation of laws decrees and other state documents were hallmarks of Athenian society from the earliest times. ; Studies in the History of Greece and Rome; 1.03 x 9.59 x 6 Inches; 274 pages . ‎THE POLITICAL ORGANIZATION OF ATTICA A Study of the Demes Trittyes and Phylai and Their Representation in the Athenian Council‎

‎American School of Classical Studies. Very Good-. 1975. Softcover. 0876615140 . Former owner's name on titlepage. Foxing to first few pages. ; Hesperia Supplement XIV; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 150 pages; Using inscriptions recording council membership recovered by excavations in the Athenian Agora the author presents a detailed reconstruction of the political geography of Attica. The reforms of the 6th-century B. C. Politician Cleisthenes organized Athenian citizens into ten tribes phylai divided into thirty "thirds" trittyes and 139 local units demes. The author shows how this visionary arrangement was maintained almost unchanged until at least 200 B. C. And provided the basis for the whole representative system at the center of ancient democracy. Charts and tables document the evidence in great detail but the whole arrangement is made easier to understand by the inclusion of a color map the basis for almost all scholarship on Athenian politics since this book was first published. . ‎WHY HOMER MATTERS‎

‎Henry Holt and Co. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2014. Hardcover. 1627791795 . Some creasing to DJ flaps. Lower corners of book a bit bumped. ; Why Homer Matters is a magical journey of discovery across wide stretches of the past sewn together by the poems themselves and their metaphors of life and trouble. Homer's poems occupy as Adam Nicolson writes "a third space" in the way we relate to the past: not as memory which lasts no more than three generations nor as the objective accounts of history but as epic invented after memory but before history poetry which aims "to bind the wounds that time inflicts." The Homeric poems are among the oldest stories we have drawing on deep roots in the Eurasian steppes beyond the Black Sea but emerging at a time around 2000 B. C. When the people who would become the Greeks came south and both clashed and fused with the more sophisticated inhabitants of the Eastern Mediterranean. ; 320 pages . Henry Holt and Co. hardcover‎

‎THE ORIENTALIZING REVOLUTION Near Eastern Influence on Greek Culture in the Early Archaic Age‎

‎Harvard University Press. Very Good. 1997. Softcover. 067464364X . Former owner's name on ffep. ; Revealing Antiquity 5; 238 pages; The rich and splendid culture of the ancient Greeks has often been described as emerging like a miracle from a genius of its own owing practically nothing to its neighbours. Walter Burkert offers an argument against that distorted view pointing toward a balanced picture of the archaic period "in which under the influence of the Semitic East Greek culture began its unique flowering soon to assume cultural hegemony in the Mediterranean". Burkert focuses on the "orientalizing" century 750-650 B.C. the period of Assyrian conquest Phoenician commerce and Greek exploration of both East and West when not only eastern skills and images but also the Semitic art of writing was transmitted to Greece. He tracks the migrant craftsmen who brought the Greeks new techniques and designs the wandering seers and healers teaching magic and medicine and the important Greek borrowings from Near Eastern poetry and myth. Drawing widey on archaeological textual and historical evidence he demonstrates that eastern models significantly affected Greek literature and religion in the Homeric age. .
