CICERO CATULLUS AND THE LANGUAGE OF SOCIAL PERFORMANCE
University Of Chicago Press. Very Good. 2001. Paperback. 0226454444 . Scholar's name to half-title Robert Brown. Else very light shelfwear. ; Charm wit and style were critical but dangerous ingredients in the social repertoire of the Roman elite. Their use drew special attention but also exposed one to potential ridicule or rejection for valuing style over substance. Brian A. Krostenko explores the complexities and ambiguities of charm wit and style in Roman literature of the late Republic by tracking the origins development and use of the terms that described them which he calls "the language of social performance." As Krostenko demonstrates a key feature of this language is its capacity to express both approval and disdainan artifact of its origins at a time when the "style" and "charm" of imported Greek cultural practices were greeted with both enthusiasm and hostility. Cicero played on that ambiguity for example by chastising lepidus "fine" boys in the "Second Oration against Catiline" as degenerates then arguing in his De Oratore that the successful speaker must have a certain charming lepos "wit". Catullus in turn exploited and inverted the political subtexts of this language for innovative poetic and erotic idioms. ; 336 pages . University Of Chicago Press paperback

Catullus; David Mulroy
THE COMPLETE POETRY OF CATULLUS Translated and with Commentary
University of Wisconsin Press. Very Good. 2002. Paperback. 0299177742 . Pencil underlining and marginalia to some pages. Scholar's name to ffep Robert Brown. ; Catullus life was akin to pulp fiction. In Julius Caesars Rome he engages in a stormy affair with a consuls wife. He writes her passionate poems of love hate and jealousy. The consul a vehement opponent of Caesar dies under suspicious circumstances. The merry widow romances numerous young men. Catullus is drawn into politics and becomes a cocky critic of Caesar writing poems that dub Julius a low-life pig and a pervert. Not surprisingly soon after no more is heard of Catullus. David Mulroy brings to life the witty poignant and brutally direct voice of a flesh-and-blood man a young provincial in the Eternal City reacting to real people and events in a Rome full of violent conflict among individuals marked by genius and megalomaniacal passions. Mulroys lively rhythmic translations of the poems are enhanced by an introduction and commentary that provide biographical and bibliographical information about Catullus a history of his times a discussion of the translations and definitions and notes that ease the way for anyone who is not a Latin scholar. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 160 pages . ENVY AND JEALOUSY IN CLASSICAL ATHENS A Socio-Psychological Approach
Oxford University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2014. Hardcover. 0199897727 . Emotions vary extensively between cultures especially in their eliciting conditions social acceptability forms of expression and co-extent of terminology. Envy and Jealousy in Classical Athens examines the sensation expression and literary representation of these major emotions in Athens. Previous scholarship has primarily taken a lexical approach focusing on usage of the Greek words phthonos and zlos. This has value but also limitations for two reasons: the discreditable nature of phthonos renders its ascription or disclamation suspect and there is no Classical Greek label for sexual jealousy. A complementary approach is therefore required one which reads the expressed values and actions of entire situations. Building on recent developments in reading emotion "scripts" in classical texts this book applies to Athenian culture and literature insights on the contexts conscious and subconscious motivations subjective manifestations and indicative behaviors of envy jealousy and related emotions. These critical insights are derived from modern philosophical psychological psychoanalytical sociological and anthropological scholarship thus enabling an exploration of both the explicit theorization and evaluation of envy and jealousy and also the more oblique ways in which they find expression across different genres-in particular philosophy oratory comedy and tragedy. By employing this new methodology Ed Sanders illuminates a significant and underexplored aspect of Classical Athenian culture and literature. ; Emotions of the Past; 224 pages . Knudsen Rachel Ahern
HOMERIC SPEECH AND THE ORIGINS OF RHETORIC
Johns Hopkins University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2014. Hardcover. 1421412268 . Top corners a bit bumped. Else book is fine. ; Traditionally Homer's epics have been the domain of scholars and students interested in ancient Greek poetry and Aristotle's rhetorical theory has been the domain of those interested in ancient rhetoric. Rachel Ahern Knudsen believes that this academic distinction between poetry and rhetoric should be challenged. Based on a close analysis of persuasive speeches in the Iliad Knudsen argues that Homeric poetry displays a systematic and technical concept of rhetoric and that many Iliadic speakers in fact employ the rhetorical techniques put forward by Aristotle. Rhetoric in its earliest formulation in ancient Greece was conceived as the power to change a listeners actions or attitudes through words Particularly through persuasive techniques and argumentation. Rhetoric was thus a "technical" discipline in the ancient Greek world a craft techn that was rule-governed learned and taught. This technical understanding of rhetoric can be traced back to the works of Plato and Aristotle which provide the earliest formal explanations of rhetoric. But do such explanations constitute the true origins of rhetoric as an identifiable systematic practice If not where does a technique-driven rhetoric first appear in literary and social history Perhaps the answer is in Homeric epics. Homeric Speech and the Origins of Rhetoric demonstrates a remarkable congruence between the rhetorical techniques used by Iliadic speakers and those collected in Aristotle's seminal treatise on rhetoric. Knudsen's claim has implications for the fields of both Homeric poetry and the history of rhetoric. In the former field it refines and extends previous scholarship on direct speech in Homer by identifying a new dimension within Homeric speech Namely the consistent deployment of well-defined rhetorical arguments and techniques. In the latter field it challenges the traditional account of the development of rhetoric probing the boundaries that currently demarcate its origins history and relationship to poetry. ; 248 pages . FIGURES OF THOUGHT IN ROMAN POETRY
Yale University Press. Good in Good dust jacket. 1980. Hardcover. 0300024568 . Scholar's bookplate to inner cover Robert Brown. Hard bump to lower edge of front board. Tiny sticker damage to ffep. Else book is VG. DJ has chipping and tears. DJ is somewhat tatty and a bit soiled to rear panel. ; 312 pages; It has long been assumed that the language of Roman poetry was constructed under the dictates of elaborately defined rules of rhetoric and its content determined according to the system of comparable classifications called invention. This belief has persisted in spite of the difficulty of fitting the works of Catullus Horace Virgil Propertius and Tibullus into such a rigid scheme. In this book Gordon Williams demonstrates that although Ovid and his successors did indeed assimilate their poetry to the rhetorical rules devised for prose the earlier poets employed a quite different method. Williams sees this method as falling into either a metaphorical or metonymic mode both of which permitted the poet "to say one thing and mean another." Delicate and often startling transitions of thought could be grasped-though not necessarily on first reading-by readers "assumed by the poet to have a special access to the poet's process of thought." This access presupposed similarities of "education social position and sympathetic understanding." Through close analyses of many poems Williams shows how poets in the fifty years before Horace's death exploited metaphor metonymy and a third device that he calls thematic anticipation to evoke subtle associations of thought. In doing so he elucidates problems of Latin poems that have been generally misunderstood almost since they day they were written. . Yale University Press hardcover

Scholar's name to ffep Robert Brown. Else book is VG. ; 289 pages; This study appraises the work of all the Roman satirists from the 2nd century BC to the end of the reign of Hadrian in AD 138. The satirists' work is shown to reflect the constantly changing society in which they lived and its topics range from the morally earnest to the bawdy. Certain themes are examined which are common to some degree to all the satirists -- autobiographical revelation personal invective political and ethical judgements and literary criticism. The book provides an exposition of the tradition of verse satire from Lucilius through Horace and Persius to Juvenal with an assessment of the structure and distinctive literary quality of each satire. It discusses satire in the Menippean tradition a composite form of prose and verse which was used first by Varro then by Petronius and by Seneca in his "Apocolocyntosis" a comical and malicious satire on the deification of the emperor Claudius. .
