Today's state of the art is reflected in the volume's contents which include editions and reeditions of texts and papers in the many areas of classical antiquity in which our knowledge has been so immeasurably enriched by the discovery and decipherment of Greek and Latin papyri viz. Language government social and economic history law private life. Some of the papers also have interdisciplinary ramifications and the international cooperation that has characterised papyrology from its inception is here readily apparent in the names languages and affiliations of the contributors. . THE GRECO-PERSIAN WARS
University of California Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1998. Softcover. 0520203135 . Scholar's name to ffep Robert Brown. Faint crease to spine. Else fine. ; The long and bitter struggle between the great Persian Empire and the fledgling Greek states reached its high point with the extraordinary Greek victory at Salamis in 480 B. C. The astonishing sea battle banished forever the specter of Persian invasion and occupation. Peter Green brilliantly retells this historic moment evoking the whole dramatic sweep of events that the Persian offensive set in motion. The massive Greek victory despite the Greeks' inferior numbers opened the way for the historic evolution of the Greek states in a climate of creativity independence and democracy one that provided a model and an inspiration for centuries to come. Green's accounts of both Persian and Greek strategies are clear and persuasive; equally convincing are his everyday details regarding the lives of soldiers statesmen and ordinary citizens. He has first-hand knowledge of the land and sea he describes as well as full command of original sources and modern scholarship. The Greco-Persian Wars is a book that lovers of fine historical writing will greet with pleasure. ; 1.29 x 9.51 x 6.53 Inches; 344 pages . University of California Press paperback

CONSTRUCTING LITERATURE IN THE ROMAN REPUBLIC
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2005. Hardcover. 052185461X . Tiny stain to rear endpaper else book is fine. Light rubbing and shelfwear to DJ. ; How the Romans came to have a literature reflecting native and foreign impulses and how it formed a legacy for subsequent generations have become central questions in the cultural history of the Republic. This book explores the development of Roman literary sensibility from early interest in epic and drama through invention of satire and eventual enshrining of books in public collections important to Horace and Ovid. The "early" literature is seen to be a product less of the mid-Republic when poetic texts began to circulate than of the late Republic when they were systematically collected and canonized. ; 262 pages . CAESAR A Biography

Else minor shelfwear. ; 9.75 x 1.75 x 6.5 Inches; 528 pages; For centuries Julius Caesar has endured in our collective imagination as a favorite among historians and scholars playwrights and poets. In legend he lives as the great conqueror of Rome's immense empire a remarkable diplomat and writer an unrivaled heartbreaker and a man of relentless determination who met a seemingly tragic end. Caesar examines the riveting story of a complex man within the context of the crisis of the Roman republic. Meier vividly reconstructs the distinctive features of this age by emphasizing the prevalent educational practices that imposed limitations on individual development. Meier clearly shows that Caesar early on established himself as a man whose unique drive self-confidence and detachment would bring him into continual conflict with established institutions. What were the political and social forces that shaped and challenged this extraordinary individual And how did this larger-than-life leader truly affect the fate of the Roman republic and the course of history Internationally renowned historian Christian Meier explores these questions in the most authoritative and accessible account ot Julius Caesar's life career and legacy. . Duckworth. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1973. Hardcover. 0715606689 . Very light shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ spine sunned. DJ is price-clipped. ; More perhaps than any other single writer Plutarch has been responsible for transmitting to Europe the central historical and moral traditions of classical antiquity. His books have been a formative influence in western civilisation; they retain a direct appeal to which it is easy to respond. Mestrius Plutarchus ca. 46- 127 was a Greek historian biographer and essayist. Born in the small town of Chaeronea in the Greek region known as Boeotia probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world including twice to Rome. Due to his parents' wealth after 67 Plutarchus was able to study philosophy rhetoric and mathematics at the Academy of Athens. He had a number of influential friends including Soscius Senecio and Fundanus both important Senators to whom some of his later writings were dedicated. He lived most of his life at Chaeronea and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. However his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia or priestess/oracle apparently occupied little of his time - he led an active social and civic life and produced an incredible body of writing much of which is still extant. ; Classical Life and Letters; 183 pages .
