Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing with creasing to rear flap. DJ is yellowed esp. To spine. ; 271 pages; This biography of Julius Caesar sets the man in his period. It covers his life from the early days in Rome dominated by Sulla Pompey and Crassus through his campaigns in Europe and Africa to his final years as a dictator. It is not however simply a narrative of events. Takes into account recent research and new evaluations the author throws light on Caesar's apparently conflicting charateristics. The numerous black and white illustrations ranging from buildings civic and domestic and portraits including many of Caesar's contemporaries to articles of everyday use preserved over the centuries or revealed by excavation complement the text. Barchiesi Alessandro & Ilaria Marchesi & Matt Fox translated by & Philip Hardie Foreword
HOMERIC EFFECTS IN VERGIL'S NARRATIVE
Princeton University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 2015. Hardcover. 069116181X . Publisher's stamp to base of textblock. Else book is fine. Very faint scuffing to DJ. Else fine. ; The study of Homeric imitations in Vergil has one of the longest traditions in Western culture starting from the very moment the Aeneid was circulated. Homeric Effects in Vergil's Narrative is the first English translation of one of the most important and influential modern studies in this tradition. In this revised and expanded edition Alessandro Barchiesi advances innovative approaches even as he recuperates significant earlier interpretations from Servius to G. N. Knauer. Approaching Homeric allusions in the Aeneid as "narrative effects" rather than glimpses of the creative mind of the author at work Homeric Effects in Vergil's Narrative demonstrates how these allusions generate hesitations and questions as well as insights and guidance and how they participate in the creation of narrative meaning. The book also examines how layers of competing interpretations in Homer are relevant to the Aeneid revealing again the richness of the Homeric tradition as a component of meaning in the Aeneid. Finally Homeric Effects in Vergil's Narrative goes beyond previous studies of the Aeneid by distinguishing between two forms of Homeric intertextuality: reusing a text as an individual model or as a generic matrix. For this edition a new chapter has been added and in a new afterword the author puts the book in the context of changes in the study of Latin literature and intertextuality. ; 216 pages . Chaudhuri Pramit
THE WAR WITH GOD Theomachy in Roman Imperial Poetry
Oxford University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2014. Hardcover. 0199993386 . Epic and tragedy from Homer's Achilles and Euripides' Pentheus to Marlowe's Tamburlaine and Milton's Satan are filled with characters challenging and warring against the gods. Nowhere is the theme of theomachy more frequently and powerfully represented however than in the poetry of early imperial Rome from Ovid's Metamorphoses at the beginning of the first century AD to Statius' Thebaid near its end. This book -- the first full-length study of human-divine conflict in Roman literature -- asks why the war against god was so important to the poets of the time and how this understudied period of literary history influenced a larger tradition in Western literature. Drawing on a variety of contexts -- politics religion philosophy and aesthetics -- Pramit Chaudhuri argues for the fundamental importance of battles between humans and gods in representing the Roman world. A cast of tyrants emperors rebels iconoclasts philosophers and ambitious poets brings to life some of the most extraordinary artistic products of classical antiquity. Based on close readings of the major extant epics and selected tragedies the book replaces a traditionally Aeneid-centric view of imperial epic with a richer dialogue between Greek and Roman texts contemporary authors and diverse genres. The renewed sense of a tradition reveals how the conflicts these works represent constitute a distinctive theology informed by other discourses yet peculiar to epic and tragedy. Beginning with the Greek background and ending with a look ahead to developments in the Renaissance this book charts the history of a theme that would find its richest expression in a time when men became gods and impiety threatened the very order of the world. ; 416 pages . THE SOUL OF TRAGEDY Essays on Athenian Drama
University Of Chicago Press. Near Fine. 2006. Softcover. 0226653064 . Faint shelfwear else fine. ; 312 pages; The Soul of Tragedy brings together top scholars to offer a wide range of perspectives on Greek tragedy. The collection pays homage to this ancient enduring theatrical and literary genre by offering a deep exploration into the oldest form of dramatic expression. It is a reminder that for all their years these dramas still have much to teach us. Exemplary of the nature and scope of this book the essays range from Simon Goldhill's comparative study of music gender and culture to Martha Nussbaum's inspection of "the comic soul." Through the critical lenses of psychoanalysis gender social history and philology this compilation looks at Greek tragedy's peculiar power to illuminate the workings of the human soul. Structures of tragic meaning the relationship between character desire and spectator experience and investigations of tragedy's extraordinary preoccupation with gender reveal the form's emotional core and explain its rapid ascent through the hierarchy of cultural practices in classical Greece. The Soul of Tragedy is a celebration and a model of collaboration that will be essential reading for scholars in classics literature and drama. . University Of Chicago Press paperback

WIT AND THE WRITING OF HISTORY The Rhetoric of Historiography in Imperial Rome
Madison WI U.S.A.: University of Wisconsin Press. Very Good. 1988. Softcover. 0299118045 . Minor curling of wraps along foreedges. Light shelfwear. ; Wit has many uses in political discourseto entertain to underscore or unmask to hinder or enhance insight. Wit and the Writing of History focuses on how this potential is realized in the historiography of the earlier Principate. Preeminently in Tacitus to a lesser degree in Suetonius and Dio Cassius wit is a vehicle for political understanding and judgment of the historical account. As part of Roman political life hostile anecdotal or epigrammatic wit was deeply embedded in the sources used by historians and is reflected in the rhetoric of their narratives. Some anecdotes may in fact have been mere jests later taken as fact hence the frequent problem of credulity. But what is historically false can be politically true. Not only were political jokes a weapon for making some fair points against the Principate; ancient rhetorical theory recognized that wit in general arises from a violation of normal expected ways of thinking. What is funny is thus disturbing in a serious way as well as amusing and in the hands of Tacitus wit becomes scalpel as well as sword. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 182 pages . A HISTORICAL COMMENTARY ON SALLUST'S BELLUM JUGURTHINUM
Francis Cairns Publications Ltd. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1984. Hardcover. 0905205162 . Very light shelfwear to book and DJ. ; The main aims of this commentary are to elucidate Sallust's narrative and to clarify his historiographical principles and methods. Such topics as the chronology and topography of the war Numidian customs and their royal family Sallust's sources the conditions of political life in contemporary Rome and Sallust's personal views are therefore given ample treatment. Textual linguistic and literary problems are discussed in so far as they relate to historical and historiographical understanding of Sallust's account. Sallust was indebted to Greek and Roman predecessors as the commentary indicates. But he also set a new fashion in Roman historiography as much by his sense of the realities of Roman public life as by the manner of his writing a style which was later adopted and developed by Tacitus the great historian of imperial Rome. ; ARCA Classical and Medieval Texts Papers and Monographs 13; 276 pages . PRINCES AND POLITICAL CULTURES The New Tiberian Senatorial Decrees
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 0472112309 . Book is fine. DJ protected in mylar. ; 208 pages; In 29 B. C. Augustus celebrated a triple triumph flanked by his nephew Marcellus and his stepson Tiberius. This event is the first attested example of the systematic promotion of young men as potential imperial successors. This practice enabled Augustus to establish the rule not of one man but of a dynastic house with a collective identity. This study built around the senate's funeral honors for Germanicus the Tabula Siarensis and its proceedings against his alleged murderer the senatus consultum de Cn. Pisone patre examines Augustus's transformation of the Roman state to a dynastic monarchy. Covering the period from the reign of Augustus to Claudius's installation Rowe demonstrates how dynastic monarchy turned citizens into subjects. Stepping back from personalities and politics to consider institutions and the values underpinning them Rowe examines six key constituencies of the new order: the Roman senate the equestrian order the urban plebs colonies Greek cities and the legions. Focusing on each group's deliberative and expressive institutions he paints a coherent picture of early imperial culture revealing the transition from formal to informal decision making and individual ascendancy over collective institutions.
