THE IMPERIAL ROMAN ARMY
Hippocrene Books. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0781802598 . Bumping to lower corners. Book and Dustjacket have minor shelfwear. ; The Emperor Augustus believed that the Roman army occupied a crucial place at the heart of the empire and it was he who made it a fully professional force. This book looks at the structure and development of the army between the Republic and the Late Empire examining why the army has always been accorded such a prominent position in the history of the Roman Empire and whether that view is justified. The book is divided into three sections. The author first examines the major divisions of army organization - the legions the auxiliary units the fleet - and how the men were recruited. Secondly he looks at what the army did - the training tactics and strategy. Finally he considers the historical role of the army - how it fitted into Roman society of which it was only part and what influence it had economically and politically. In exploring these themes the author gives equal weight to epigraphic documentary and archaeological evidence. With tables summarizing detailed information Yann Le Bohec provides a synthesis of current knowledge of the Roman army from the first to the third century AD putting it in its context as part of the state structure of the Roman Empire. ; 9.75 x 1.25 x 6.75 Inches; 304 pages . THE ORIGINS OF THE CENTER FOR HELLENIC STUDIES
Princeton University Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0691031746 . Very light rubbing else Fine. ; 96 pages; A case study in American philanthropy this book describes the beginnings of the Center for Hellenic Studies a research institute established in 1961 in Washington D.C. as an outpost of Harvard University. Each year eight post-doctoral fellows come from all over the world to live at the center and do research in ancient Greek literature philosophy or history. The idea behind this arrangement began with the preeminent philanthropist Paul Mellon's interest in finding a project to advance the humanities. Eric Lindquist traces the ten-year evolution of the center from Mellon's first general notion. In the process he portrays some of the hopes and fears for the humanities especially the classics in America during the period following World War II and the climate of opinion that led to the establishment of the center. The study concludes with a short account of the subsequent development of the center. This is the first published account of the origins of the center. . Princeton University Press hardcover

CLIO AND THE POETS Augustan Poetry and the Traditions of Ancient Historiography
Leiden: Brill. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 9004117822 . Lower corners a bit bumped. ; Xv 396pp. The Augustan age was one in which writers were constantly reworking the Roman past and which was marked by a profound engagement of poets with the historians and historical techniques which were the main vehicle for the transmission of the image of the past to their day. In this book 17 leading scholars from Europe and America examine the fascinating interaction between such apparently diverse genres: how the Augustan poets drew on - or reacted against - the historians' presentation of the world and how conversely historians picked up and transformed poetic themes for their own ends. With essays on poems from Horace's Odes to Ovid's "Metamorphoses" on authors from Virgil to Valerius Maximus it forms the most comprehensive examination yet of this central topic of this most central of literary periods. ; 396 pages . MUSIC IN THE ODES OF HORACE
Aris & Phillips. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2010. Hardcover. 0856688444 . Corners very slightly bumped else book is fine. Light shelfwear to DJ. ; Viii 204pp illustrated. Following the success of Horace's Odes and the Mystery of Do-Re-Mi in which he proposed that Horace's Odes were truly carmina songs Stuart Lyons further explores the orality of the Odes in both the Augustan Age and their early medieval reception. Challenging the perception of the Odes as purely literary works and drawing on extensive evidence in Horace and other ancient sources Lyons argues that Horace's objective was to produce a unique type of performance art a Latin re-interpretation of Greek lyric song to entertain the Roman elite. In post-Carolingian manuscripts there are several instances of musical notation for the Odes. Some was to help students articulate their Latin but other notation records performance works. Lyons shows that the arrangement for the Ode to Phyllis in the Montpellier manuscript and Guido d'Arezzo's do-re-mi mnemonic share a common ancestor. The long-hidden St Petersburg codex is a virtual songbook with sixteen melodies reflecting secular as well as monastic traditions. These and other manuscripts provide persuasive evidence that Horace was sung for entertainment as well as teaching. While there is no provable link between early medieval performance and Horace's own practice Lyons argues that the Horace of the Odes was a musical innovator songwriter and entertainer as well as a literary craftsman and sang much of his lyric poetry to the accompaniment of his own lyre. With 50 illustrations 12 colour plates and a comprehensive set of indexes this book will stimulate and inform both classicists and musical historians. ; 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall; 204 pages . White Peter
PROMISED VERSE Poets in the Society of Augustan Rome
Harvard University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 067471525X . Book is fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; It served a poet well indeed to have Augustus for a friend. And if Augustus were a friend of poets All the better for the great glory of Roman letters. It is this arrangement complicated by questions of influence and accommodation and simple human susceptibility to the blandishments of power that Peter White explores in "Promised Verse". Combining social history and literary interpretation this book reveals the circumstances of poetic production in the golden era of Virgil Ovid Horace Tibullus and Propertius. Peter White takes a close look at the relationship between the Augustan poets and the men of wealth and status who befriended them - and rewarded their literary efforts with money gifts and the benefits of illustrious connection. These ties - between for instance Horace and Maecenas - appear as part of an elaborate system of social conventions a system of mutual advantage to poet and patron. Within this context White also considers groups and institutions - the mysterious collegium poetarum the schools of the grammarians libraries and public recitations - that helped the poet make his way and linked him to Roman society. In Augustus we see a patron comparable in many ways to his aristocratic counterparts. The Emperor sought to promote Roman literature and yet seems to have intervened only rarely in the poetry he sponsored. Contrary to a view that has been prevalent since the eighteenth century the result was not literary propaganda. Instead White shows the public poetry created by Augustan poets was as independent and inventive as the rest of their work. ; 330 pages . Harvard University Press hardcover
