COLLECTED ANCIENT GREEK NOVELS
University of California Press. Very Good. 1989. Softcover. 0520043065 . Slight creasing to corner of front wrap and first few pages. Ffep top corner is clipped to remove owner's name . Light shelfwear. ; 835 pages; Prose fiction although not always associated with classical antiquity did in fact flourish in the early Roman Empire not only in realistic Latin novels but also and indeed principally in the Greek ideal romance of love and adventure to which they are related. Popular in the Renaissance these stories have been less familiar in later centuries. Translations of the Greek stories were not readily available in English before B. P. Reardons excellent volume. Nine complete stories are included here as well as ten others encompassing the whole range of classical themes: ideal romance travel adventure historical fiction and comic parody. A new foreword by J. R. Morgan examines the enormous impact this groundbreaking collection has had on our understanding of classical thought and our concept of the novel. . THE PRIVATE ORATIONS OF THEMISTIUS Translated Annotated and Introduced
University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0520218213 . Very light bump to 1 corner else book is fine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Themistius was a philosopher a prominent Constantinopolitan senator and an adviser to Roman emperors during the fourth century A. D. In this first translation of Themistius's private orations to be published in English Robert J. Penella makes accessible texts that shed significant light on the culture of Constantinople and more generally the eastern Roman empire during the fourth century. The sixteen speeches translated here are equipped with ample annotations and an informative introduction making them a valuable resource on the late antique period as well as on Greek intellectual history and oratory. In Themistius's public orations he played the role of imperial panegyrist but in the "private" or unofficial orations presented here the senator concerns himself with apologetics rhetorical and philosophical programs material of autobiographical interest and ethical themes. The speeches are valuable as evidence for the political social philosophical religious and literary history of fourth century Byzantium and as examples of pagan ideology and eloquence in the newly Christianized court. Themistius argues among other things that the philosopher should be involved in public affairs that the lessons of philosophy should be broadcast to the masses and that it is appropriate for the philosopher to be an effective orator in order to circulate his teachings. ; Transformation of the Classical Heritage; 1.12 x 9.32 x 6.29 Inches; 258 pages . ROMAN SATIRE
Methuen & Company / Barnes & Noble. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1976. Hardcover. 0416851207 . Scholar's bookplate to front pastedown G. P. Goold. Minor shelfwear to book. DJ has minor edgewear with creasing. ; Alternate ISBN: 0064712516; 289 pages; This study appraises the work of all the Roman satirists from the 2nd century BC to the end of the reign of Hadrian in AD 138. The satirists' work is shown to reflect the constantly changing society in which they lived and its topics range from the morally earnest to the bawdy. Certain themes are examined which are common to some degree to all the satirists -- autobiographical revelation personal invective political and ethical judgements and literary criticism. The book provides an exposition of the tradition of verse satire from Lucilius through Horace and Persius to Juvenal with an assessment of the structure and distinctive literary quality of each satire. It discusses satire in the Menippean tradition a composite form of prose and verse which was used first by Varro then by Petronius and by Seneca in his "Apocolocyntosis" a comical and malicious satire on the deification of the emperor Claudius. . Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2010. Hardcover. 019726428X . Very light bumping to 1 corner else fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; Lexicon of Greek Personal Names; 246 pages; This volume is a significant contribution to the study of the ancient Greek vocabulary used to describe the local origins of individuals. It sheds much new light on ancient grammarians and other ancient writers many of them 'lost' in the sense that they survive only in quotations in later sources. At the heart of the volume is a study of the sources which lie behind an enigmatic but important treatise which survives only in epitome: the Ethnika of the grammarian Stephanus of Byzantium. This biography sets the historian's career and his method of dealing with his subject matter in the context of Roman society in the early Empire and draws a picture of the coherence of Suetonius's life appointments scholarship and literary activities. Seutonius is presented as a man of learning rather than as a failed narrative historian. PLUTARCH
London: Duckworth. Very Good. 1973. Softcover. 0715616110 . Some edgewear to wraps with a bit of colour loss. Minor bump to base of spine. ; 183pp. More perhaps than any other single writer Plutarch has been responsible for transmitting to Europe the central historical and moral traditions of classical antiquity. His books have been a formative influence in western civilisation; they retain a direct appeal to which it is easy to respond. Mestrius Plutarchus ca. 46- 127 was a Greek historian biographer and essayist. Born in the small town of Chaeronea in the Greek region known as Boeotia probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world including twice to Rome. Due to his parents' wealth after 67 Plutarchus was able to study philosophy rhetoric and mathematics at the Academy of Athens. He had a number of influential friends including Soscius Senecio and Fundanus both important Senators to whom some of his later writings were dedicated. He lived most of his life at Chaeronea and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. However his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia or priestess/oracle apparently occupied little of his time - he led an active social and civic life and produced an incredible body of writing much of which is still extant. ; Classical Life & Letters; 183 pages .
