SUETONIUS The Scholar and His Caesars
London: Duckworth. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1983. Hardcover. 0715617478 . Some pencil marginalia mostly checkmarks especially to first 60pp ink smudge in margin of 2 pages. Very light bump to 1 corner. ; Ix 216pp. ; 216 pages; Suetonius a Roman historian was the author of "The Lives of the Caesars". This biography sets the historian's career and his method of dealing with his subject matter in the context of Roman society in the early Empire and draws a picture of the coherence of Suetonius's life appointments scholarship and literary activities. Seutonius is presented as a man of learning rather than as a failed narrative historian. This portrait takes account of evidence concerning his life and seeks to clarify the character of "The Lives of the Caesars" as a description of emperors and Roman imperial society by a scholarly biographer who himself was in the service of a scholarly Caesar . PLUTARCH
London: Duckworth. Very Good. 1973. Softcover. 0715616110 . Some edgewear to wraps with a bit of colour loss. Minor bump to base of spine. ; 183pp. More perhaps than any other single writer Plutarch has been responsible for transmitting to Europe the central historical and moral traditions of classical antiquity. His books have been a formative influence in western civilisation; they retain a direct appeal to which it is easy to respond. Mestrius Plutarchus ca. 46- 127 was a Greek historian biographer and essayist. Born in the small town of Chaeronea in the Greek region known as Boeotia probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world including twice to Rome. Due to his parents' wealth after 67 Plutarchus was able to study philosophy rhetoric and mathematics at the Academy of Athens. He had a number of influential friends including Soscius Senecio and Fundanus both important Senators to whom some of his later writings were dedicated. He lived most of his life at Chaeronea and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. However his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia or priestess/oracle apparently occupied little of his time - he led an active social and civic life and produced an incredible body of writing much of which is still extant. ; Classical Life & Letters; 183 pages . The MIT Press. Very Good. 1993. Softcover. 0262540711 . Tear to head of spine with small piece torn off 1 cm. Sticker damage to rear wrap small area of colour loss. ; Catalogue from the exhibition held at the Morgan Library and the Centre Canadien d'Architecture in Montreal; with four critical essays and the main catalogue with 128 b/w illustrations & 9 colour plates; 293 pages; The response to Rome by eighteenth-century Italian French and British artists is the subject of this beautifully illustrated large-format book. The focal point is a group of approximately 40 drawings and prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi 1720-1778 whose dramatic and often fanciful views of Rome helped to create and spread a new vision of antiquity. Most of the works illustrated are drawn from the collections of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Pierpont Morgan Library whose holdings of Piranesi drawings is the largest in the world. The works encompass the full scope of Piranesi's activities as architect antiquarian and designer. Works by Pannini Fragonard Robert Adam Filippo Juvarra Hubert Robert Jean-Laurent Legeay Charles de Wailly and other eighteenth-century artists who drew inspiration from Roman art architecture and the surrounding countryside during this period are also included. In addition to texts by the three main authors there are essays by John Wilton-Ely and Elisabeth Kieven and entries by Henry Millon Christine Challingsworth Ruth S. Kraemer and Jean de Cayeux. . Mellor Ronald
TACITUS
NY: Routledge. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0415906652 . Book is fine. DJ is protected in mylar. ; The histories of Roman senator Cornelius Tacitus constitute the most influential examination of tyranny political behavior and public morality from the classical age. For centuries these portraits of courageous martyrs to freedom of paranoid tyrants and of sycophantic flatteres and informers shaped modern political attitudes. Ronald Mellor provides a compelling analysis of the ideas of the greatest historian of evil in the western intellectual tradition. In Tacitus Ronald Mellor passionately argues for reclaiming this ironic genius whose cynical world view is particularly well-suited to an analysis of the tyranny and brutality in our own century. Tacitus is presented as a moralist psychologist political analyst and literary artist. Tacitus' greatest impact has never been on historians. Rather his political vision and dramatic images left their mark on painters poets and thinkers. ; 211 pages . Routledge hardcover
