MYTH AND POETRY IN LUCRETIUS
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0521451353 . Very minor shelfwear to corners. Else book is fine. DJ has tears to base of spine and 1 corner. Some minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Lucretius' De Rerum Natura is a philosophical epic devoted to the exposition of Epicurean philosophy. Since the system was materialistic and highly critical of myth and poetry Lucretius' use of mythological language and imagery is surprising. Dr. Gale considers the poem against the background of earlier and contemporary views of myth and suggests that Lucretius was well aware of the tension between his two roles as poet and philosopher and attempted to resolve it by developing a bold and innovative theory of myth and poetry. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 276 pages . VIRGIL'S AUGUSTAN EPIC
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1989. Hardcover. 0521353580 . Minor shelfwear to book. DJ has some edgewear with chipping and small tears to spine ends and corners. Sticker damage to bottom corner of front wrap. R. E. Fantham's notes in pen and pencil to rear DJ flap. ; An examination of the main characters in the Aeneid - Aeneas himself Dido and Turnus - in the light of Virgil's contemporary Augustan political and literary ideology. The characters and the plot and incident of the epic are seen as embodying and exemplifying first the ancient ideals of kingship and concord and second the Roman self-identification as at once 'Italian' and 'Trojan' and finally as reflecting the literary self-evaluation of the Augustan age. In the literary area Virgil's relations with contemporary Roman elegy with early Greek lyric and most important with Homer are studied and reevaluated. WORDS AND THE POET Characteristic Techniques of Style in Vergil's Aeneid
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1989. Hardcover. 0198148968 . Corners very mildly bumped. Minor shelfwear. DJ has light edgewear and minor rubbing. ; Throughout his vast literary output to a surprising extent Vergil avoided artifacts of poetic diction like archaism and grecism preferring instead ordinary language that grew from the common stock of the Latin tongue such as colloquialisms and prosaisms. This remarkably coherent and readable study identifies and categorizes such diction in Vergil's writings showing further how such comparatively unpromising material was converted by the poet's methods of "combination" unctura into poetry. In a critical analysis Lyne draws parallels between Horace's procedures in combining works to "make them new" and Vergil's bold combinations which veritably extort unexpected and novel sense. ; 224 pages . THE TWO WORLDS OF THE POET New Perspectives on Vergil
Wayne State University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1992. Hardcover. 0814324509 . Very light shelfwear to book else fine. DJ has light edgewear. ; This collection of essays honors Alexander Gordon McKay one of the most respected names in Vergilian studies. Written by some of the world's leading scholars the essays offer new perspectives on the larger Vergilian world which Dr. McKay's scholarship has so richly illuminated. The Two Worlds of the Poet focuses primarily on Vergil and Augustan literature and art with several essays that expand the Vergilian theme and reflect the wide research interests of Professor McKay in such areas of classical studies as literature art architecture painting and sculpture. Vergil's world presents two faces each inseparable from the other-the world which formed the poet and the world which the poet himself createdand it is proper that a volume which commemorates a scholar whose own work has elucidated both of these worlds should address itself to each. Several essays examine the poet's modus creandihis use of the simile; his assimilation of the language and motifs of Roman comic drama; his exploitation of the rich store of Greek Etruscan and Roman mythological legendary and historical material; and his treatment of a variety of themes which touch upon the very essence of the human condition. Other essays touch upon various aspects of Vergil's material and cultural environment enabling readers to place his created work in a broader perspective. Contributors offer new perspectives on the post-classical treatment of Vergilian themes illustrating how the reception of Vergil varied with successive generations. The volume concludes with the reflections of the senior statesman of Vergilian criticism upon the scholar's art and mission. Vergil knew that to understand the present it was essential to break out of the narrow circle of the moment and to reach into the past thereby affirming our own humanity and our place in the world and finding paths into the future. Vergil and his poetry create evocative connections that cut across time and place and culture providing a glimpse at the universal human experience. The essays in The Two Worlds of the Poet explore Vergil's own struggle to find his place in the world chronicle the pathway by which we gain entry into the world of the poet and examine how the world of the poet has influenced and enriched our world. ; Classical Studies Pedagogy Series; 548 pages . Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1976. Hardcover. 0521209935 . Small scratch to front board 1.5 cm. Bumping to corners. DJ has edgewear with chipping and tears-- DJ is a little tattered. ; In these studies of Latin poetry Niall Rudd demonstrates a variety of critical methods and approaches. He shows how it can be fruitful at different times to consider the historical background of a poem its language or structure its place in a literary tradition the role of critical paradigms and so on. But if no single approach has special and invariable authority this does not imply critical anarchy. Each has its own validity for different purposes its own strengths and limitations. The reader must be versatile and sensitive to a range of possibilities but not doctrinaire. ; 226 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

VERGIL'S GEORGICS AND THE TRADITIONS OF ANCIENT EPIC The Art of Allusion in Literary History
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0195067061 . Gift inscription from author to R. E. Fantham on ffep. Else book is fine. DJ has very light shelfwear with 1 tiny chip to one corner. ; In this important and original new book Joseph Farrell argues that there is a detailed and extensive program of literary allusion in Vergil's Georgics moving basically from Hesiod and Aratus in the first book to Lucretius in the middle two to Homer in the fourth. This program involves what he calls "analytic" allusion namely a reconstruction or interpretation of the texts alluded to; and he contends the direction of the allusion moving from Hesiod and perhaps Alexandrian poetics toward Homer and heroic epic helps to clarify the development of Vergil's poetic career which moves from the Callimacheanism of the Eclogues to the full-fledged epic of the Aeneid. Applying to the Georgics the full range of recent scholarly methodology Farrell's pathbreaking book will be of great interest to all scholars and students of Vergil classical literature and literary allusion. ; 416 pages . Fantham in pencil with her pencil underlining and marginalia to some pages. 1 page has very light soiling tea . DJ has tear to upper corner 1 cm with chipping to spine ends and rubbed area to top of DJ spine. ; Ovid's Fasti has remained curiously neglected as an historical source for the period in which it was written. This new study reveals that the poem of some five thousand lines on the Roman calendar written and revised in the years between A. D. 4-16 provides students of the Augustan age with a wealth of information both about the author himself and about his cultural and political environment. In addition to revelations about the way in which Augustus and his family were incorporated into the ancient religion of the city of Rome and details of the last decade of Augustus' life and the first years of Tiberius' rule Herbert-Brown finds in the poem new evidence of the processes which marked the transition from the Republic to Empire. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 264 pages . Staley Gregory A.
SENECA AND THE IDEA OF TRAGEDY
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2009. Hardcover. 0195387430 . Upper corners very lightly bumped else fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; As both a literary genre and a view of life tragedy has from the very beginning spurred a dialogue between poetry and philosophy. Plato famously banned tragedians from his ideal community because he believed that their representations of vicious behavior could deform minds. Aristotle set out to answer Plato's objections arguing that fiction offers a faithful image of the truth and that it promotes emotional health through the mechanism of catharsis. Aristotle's definition of tragedy actually had its greatest impact not on Greek tragedy itself but on later Latin literature beginning with the tragedies of the Roman poet and Stoic philosopher Seneca 4 BC - AD 65. Scholarship over the last fifty years however has increasingly sought to identify in Seneca's prose writings a Platonic poetics which is antagonistic toward tragedy and which might therefore explain why Seneca's plays seem so often to present the failure of Stoicism. As Gregory Staley argues in this book when Senecan tragedy fails to stage virtue we should see in this not the failure of Stoicism but a Stoic conception of tragedy as the right vehicle for imaging Seneca's familiar world of madmen and fools. Senecan tragedy enacts Aristotle's conception of the genre as a vivid image of the truth and treats tragedy as a natural venue in which to explore the human soul. Staley's reading of Seneca's plays draws on current scholarship about Stoicism as well as on the writings of Renaissance authors like Sir Philip Sidney who borrowed from Seneca the word "idea" to designate what we would now label as a "theory" of tragedy. Seneca and the Idea of Tragedy will appeal broadly to students and scholars of classics ancient philosophy and English literature. ; 200 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover

Conte Gian Biagio
THE HIDDEN AUTHOR An Interpretation of Petronius's Satyricon
University of California Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0520207157 . Paperclip indent to first 2 pages. Else book is fine. DJ has very minor shelfwear. ; The Satyricon of Petronius a comic novel written in the first century A. D. is famous today primarily for its amazing banquet tale "Trimalchio's Feast." But this episode is only one part of the larger picture of life during Nero's rule presented in the work. In this accessible discussion of Petronius's masterful use of parody Gian Biagio Conte offers an interpretation of the Satyricon as a whole. He combines the scholarly precision of close reading with a significant original theoretical model. At the heart of his interpretation Conte reveals the technique of the "hidden author" that Petronius employs at the expense of his characters in particular the teller of the story Enclopius. By remaining hidden outside the narrative Petronius invites the reader to smile at the folies de grandeur that occur in a culture of scholars and declaimers. Yet as Conte shows behind the parody and inexhaustible humor of the Satyricon lies an unexpectedly serious lament. For those familiar with the Satyricon as well as for new readers Conte's book will be a reliable enjoyable guide to the wonders the Satyricon contains. ; Sather Classical Lectures 60; 224 pages . READING VIRGIL AND HIS TEXTS Studies in Intertextuality
University of Michigan Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0472108972 . 1 corner bumped. Minor shelfwear. Light pencil marginalia to a couple of pages. DJ has some minor creasing. ; There has long been vital interest in the ways that texts affect each other--through translation imitation parody and other forms of emulation and subversion. Throughout the last two millennia the Virgilian text has created its own intertextual heritage persisting in the works of Eliot Frost Lowell and Heaney. Richard F. Thomas's new volume demonstrates that such control and manipulation of the inherited tradition is to be found with great intensity in the very author who in turn created his own complex tradition. The articles and notes included in this volume have been selected for their diachronic aspect in addition to the synchronic status they had in their original context. Dealing with the intricate ways in which Virgil and in the introductory chapter his predecessor Catullus manipulated and appropriated their inherited Greek and Roman literary tradition this book presents a coherent profile through these detailed studies of the mechanics of one of the most dynamic periods in the literary history of any culture. Richard Thomas--one of the most important voices in Latin literary studies today--shows little anxiety about objections to authorial intentionality. Throughout there is a working assumption that intertextual connections can be established and further that functions and purposes even intended ones may be inferred from those connections. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Greek and Latin literature but will also be of great value to students of medieval Renaissance and early modern vernacular literatures most of whose poets see themselves as closely connected to Virgil. ; 360 pages . LYSIMACHUS A Study in Early Hellenistic Kingship
Routledge. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 1992. Hardcover. 0415070619 . Very light bumping to corners of book. Else fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; 0.94 x 8.66 x 5.59 Inches; 304 pages; Among Alexander's successors Lysimachus is the forgotten man; when he is recalled it is usually as brutal oppressor of the Greeks or conversely as a mediocre little man spurred into action only late in life by a domineering woman. As the first full-length study of Lysimachus in the English language this book aims to reassess Lysimachus' achievements which although ephemeral foreshadowed the growth of the Pergamene and Byzantine empires. Helen Lund sets Lysimachus' actions against the background of the early Hellenistic world marked by extreme political instability and constant warfare but also by great developments in city building portraiture and numismatics. Lysimachus' practice in warfare kingship and government is compared and contrasted with that of his contemporaries his predecessors and his successors in order to set his achievements in the context of a continuum of imperial rule in Asia Minor. The evidence for Lysimachus's rule is set in its literary political and social context. Covering Lysimachus's rise from governor of the obscure satrapy of Thrace to ruler of a vast Hellespont-centered kingdom this book analyzes his skills as warrior and diplomat and examines the factors which motivated him at each stage of his career. Helen Lund discusses images of Lysimachus in literature his contribution to early Hellenistic kingship ritual and royal propaganda offering a completely fresh approach to the dynastic struggle which ended his career. . Slight damage to upper edge of DJ. ; Roman Imperial Biographies; 0.95 x 9.43 x 6.38 Inches; 271 pages; Augustus the heir to Julius Caesar was the guiding light in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. In this biography Pat Southern traces the life and works of the emperor chronologically presenting idealogy and events as they occurred from Augustus' point of view including his transition from heir and successor of Julius Caesar to head of the new Principate and his development of the Roman Empire. Augustus did not have a master plan of politics and legislation but instead he had to wait and occasionally change course before he settled on a version of government that the Senate and people found acceptable. While there have been many books covering the political social and aesthetic culture of the Augustan Age this is the first book to present the life of Augustus the man. . Routledge hardcover

Mueller Hans Friedrich
ROMAN RELIGION IN VALERIUS MAXIMUS
Routledge. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 0415271088 . Faint staining to lower section of front inner cover and small stain 1cm to first 2 pages. Staining to lower section of DJ the reverse section cannot be seen unless DJ is removed. Small scratches to rear panel of DJ. ; Routledge Classical Monographs; 288 pages; Valerius Maximus was an indefatigable collector of historical anecdotes illustrating vice and virtue. His Memorable Deeds and Sayings are unparalleled as a source for the opinions of Romans in the early empire on a vast range of subjects. Mueller focuses on what Valerius can tell us about contemporary Roman attitudes to religion attacking several orthodoxies along the way. He argues that Roman religion could be deeply emotional. That it was possible to believe passionately in the divinity of the emperor - even when like Tiberius he was still alive - and that Rome's gods and religious rituals had an important role in fostering conventional morality. The study further explores elements of ancient rhetoric Roman historiography and Tiberian Rome. The fact that Valerius was a contemporary of Jesus means his work is also valuable in reflecting the attitudes and beliefs of the ruling class to which Christ and his followers were politically subject and which formed the background to the growth and persecution of Christianity. .
