Rhetorical scholars have begun uncovering the many marginalized rhetorical traditions silenced by the homogenous nature of our histories themselves reading and writing new histories of the rhetorical tradition through frames from gender to geography. Despite these substantial challenges to the traditionally received history of rhetoric many voices are still silenced and many spaces are still excluded - voices speaking within the spaces of the less-than-monolithic West itself. This silencing and excluding continues perhaps because of assumptions that no texts exist from these marginalized voices or that substantial rhetorical activity was not conducted in these marginalized spaces - regardless of already extant evidence of rhetorical activity as diverse as rural civic ethos in Classical Greece and Etruscan influences on Roman rhetoric or long-standing passive knowledge of scholarly activity in Medieval Andalusia and Ireland. Christiane Nasse shows that this assumption is based on a misinterpretation of key sources and features prevalent in a century of historical research. The critique leads to deconstruction: either the hypothesis of a dichotomy of extispicy appears plausible or it is sufficiently defined as a "sacred linguistics" on which the research is essentially based. Following up on this question the author investigates the critical sources for ritual slaughter according to historical referentiality on the one hand and textual dissociation on the other. She brings together late-antique commentators on Vergil such as Servius and Macrobius as well as laws from the Codex Theodosianus. Through individual analysis she throws a new light on the poetic representation of classical authors such as Vergil Ovid Lucan Seneca and Silius Italicus which renders essential the use of historical-critical methods on the one side and the basics of narratology on the other. DJ is somewhat tatty. ; 312 pages; It has long been assumed that the language of Roman poetry was constructed under the dictates of elaborately defined rules of rhetoric and its content determined according to the system of comparable classifications called invention. This belief has persisted in spite of the difficulty of fitting the works of Catullus Horace Virgil Propertius and Tibullus into such a rigid scheme. In this book Gordon Williams demonstrates that although Ovid and his successors did indeed assimilate their poetry to the rhetorical rules devised for prose the earlier poets employed a quite different method. Williams sees this method as falling into either a metaphorical or metonymic mode both of which permitted the poet "to say one thing and mean another." Delicate and often startling transitions of thought could be grasped-though not necessarily on first reading-by readers "assumed by the poet to have a special access to the poet's process of thought." This access presupposed similarities of "education social position and sympathetic understanding." Through close analyses of many poems Williams shows how poets in the fifty years before Horace's death exploited metaphor metonymy and a third device that he calls thematic anticipation to evoke subtle associations of thought. In this book Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources chronology bias interest in causation etc. The introduction ends with a r�sum� of the numerous theories of the author's identity Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all. The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography.
