‎FIGURES OF THOUGHT IN ROMAN POETRY‎

‎Yale University Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1980. Hardcover. 0300024568 . Inscribed by author to R. E. Fantham on ffep : "To Elaine with love from the author. 15. V. 80" top corners bumped. Minor shelfwear to book. DJ has large tear to front panel and creasing. DJ has chipping and tears. DJ is somewhat tatty. ; 312 pages; It has long been assumed that the language of Roman poetry was constructed under the dictates of elaborately defined rules of rhetoric and its content determined according to the system of comparable classifications called invention. This belief has persisted in spite of the difficulty of fitting the works of Catullus Horace Virgil Propertius and Tibullus into such a rigid scheme. In this book Gordon Williams demonstrates that although Ovid and his successors did indeed assimilate their poetry to the rhetorical rules devised for prose the earlier poets employed a quite different method. Williams sees this method as falling into either a metaphorical or metonymic mode both of which permitted the poet "to say one thing and mean another." Delicate and often startling transitions of thought could be grasped-though not necessarily on first reading-by readers "assumed by the poet to have a special access to the poet's process of thought." This access presupposed similarities of "education social position and sympathetic understanding." Through close analyses of many poems Williams shows how poets in the fifty years before Horace's death exploited metaphor metonymy and a third device that he calls thematic anticipation to evoke subtle associations of thought. In doing so he elucidates problems of Latin poems that have been generally misunderstood almost since they day they were written.; Signed by Author . Yale University Press hardcover‎

‎Janan Micaela‎

‎THE POLITICS OF DESIRE Propertius IV‎

‎University of California Press. Near Fine. 2000. Softcover. 0520223217 . Very light shelfwear else fine. ; 293 pages; Propertius ca. 54 b. C. --ca. 2 b. C. was a Roman poet who composed four compelling books of elegies in the chaotic years surrounding Rome's transition from republic to empire. The first three of these books revolve mostly around a tormented love affair with a woman called Cynthia. The fourth book of poetry rests on more diverse subject matter and is notoriously the most opaque and elusive. In The Politics of Desire Micaela Janan radically reassesses Propertius' last elegies using contemporary psychoanalytic theory to illuminate these challenging texts. Janan finds that the upheaval of Rome's transformation to empire corresponds to the intellectually unsettled conditions of our own time so that contemporary methodologies offer an uncannily suitable approach for understanding Propertius. In particular she uses the work of Jacques Lacan since it provides the best conceptual tools for examining the relation between political crisis and the struggles of the self a theme that resonates in these difficult elegies. This book expands our understanding of an important Roman poet and its innovative and sophisticated methodological approach makes a substantial contribution to feminist and psychoanalytic criticism. In addition Janan addresses elegy's relationship to larger cultural questions and broadens our understanding of the social crisis affecting Rome during the early empire. . ‎Persius; Cynthia S. Dessen Ed. & Kenneth Reckford Foreword‎

‎THE SATIRES OF PERSIUS Iunctura Callidus Acri.‎

‎Duckworth Publishing. Very Good. 1996. Second Edition. Softcover. 1853994871 . " 1996 " has been written in pen to ffep. Very faint creasing to front wrap. Else fine. ; Bristol Classical Paperbacks; 128 pages; This volume published in 1968 was the first critical study of Persius in English. Unjustly squeezed from students' reading by the satiric giants Juvenal and Horace Persius has often been regarded as 'difficult' or 'minor' and marginalized condemned to 'the schooldust of the ages' by the repeated editing of traditional scholars Clausen Kissel. What Dessen offers is a close reading within the framework of the new criticism which led classics in the 1960s. She empasises the distinction between 'persona' and poet and argues that Persius' Satires far from being just 'difficult' are unified and comprehensible through their controlling metaphors their dominant imagery and word-repetition. In the heady days of post-structuralism Dessen's approach pioneering in its way remains a beacon of stimulating poetic appreciation and one in which students and scholars of Persius will find a sound basis for their further work. A new elegant Foreword by Kenneth Reckford places Dessen's work in its critical context. . Duckworth Publishing paperback‎

‎SOPHOCLES An Interpretation‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1980. Softcover. 0521296846 . Spine a little creased. 1 corner lightly creased. Light pencil marginalia to a few pages. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. ; 0.94 x 8.82 x 5.91 Inches; 358 pages; In this interpretation of the seven extant tragedies of Sophocles Professor Winnington-Ingram provides not so much a straightforward account of Sophocles as an exploration of his tragic vision of the world. The Sophoclean hero lies at the centre of this vision. Taking the plays individually but without losing sight of the single consistent mind behind them the author faces the questions of how the hero is to be regarded what we are to make of the fates he suffered and the divine powers who controlled those fates. He proceeds by a detailed study of what Sophocles wrote by close attention to form and recurrent themes and especially by close analysis of a number of choral odes. Students of Greek drama will find that this detailed study provides invaluable insights into the meaning of the tragedies. Greek in the text is translated or paraphrased so that the book will also be of interest to students of the literature and drama of other cultures. . Cambridge University Press paperback‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good- dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. 0521043522 . Scholar's name to ffep Martin Cropp. Else book is fine. DJ has edgewear with chipping to spine ends. DJ spine is a little browned. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources chronology bias interest in causation etc. The introduction ends with a rsum of the numerous theories of the author's identity Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all. The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia. . Cambridge University Press hardcover‎

Scholar's name to ffep Martin Cropp. Very light shelfwear else fine. ; 0.75 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 194 pages; This volume complements D. J. In this volume Conacher provides a detailed running commentary on the three earlier plays The Persians The Seven against Thebes and The Suppliants as well as an analysis of their themes structure and dramatic techniques and devices. In two more general studies he reviews Aeschylus' dramatic uses of the chorus and of imagery. ‎Staples Ariadne‎

‎FROM GOOD GODDESS TO VESTAL VIRGINS Sex and Category in Roman Religion‎

‎Routledge. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0415132339 . Scholar's name to ffep R. E. Fantham. Else book is fine. 1 small closed tear to DJ 1 cm. Else Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; 0.79 x 8.43 x 5.67 Inches; 207 pages; The role of women in Roman culture and society was a paradoxical one. They enjoyed social material and financial independence yet they were denied basic constitutional rights. Although Roman history is not short of powerful female figures such as Agrippina and Livia their power stemmed from their associations with great men and was not officially recognized. Ariadne Staples' book examines how women in Rome were perceived both by themselves and by men through women's participation in Roman religion as Roman religious ritual provided the single public arena where women played a significant formal role. From Good Goddess to Vestal Virgins argues that the ritual roles played out by women were vital in defining them sexually and that these sexually defined categories spilled over into other aspects of Roman culture including political activity. Staples provides an arresting and original analysis of the role of women in Roman society which challenges traditionally held views and provokes further questions. . Routledge hardcover‎

‎Sophocles; T. B. L. Webster Ed.‎

‎SOPHOCLES: PHILOCTETES‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1994. Softcover. 0521098904 . Very faint creasing to 1 corner of wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 177 pages; The theme of Sophocles' Philoctetes is of lasting significance. It revolves round Neoptolemus' struggles with his conscience and Philoctetes' strength in adversity and refusal to accept any compromise. Sophocles explores the relationship between the two central characters with powerful subtlety. The main emphasis in Professor Webster's commentary is on explaining the impact of the play through metre and language rather than on the examination and comparison of points of grammatical and syntactical usage. He deals with all the essential problems of the play at a level appropriate to the needs of students in the upper forms of schools and at university. . Cambridge University Press paperback‎

‎Euripides; William Allan‎

‎EURIPIDES: THE CHILDREN OF HERACLES With an Introduction Translation and Commentary.‎

‎Aris & Phillips. Near Fine. 2001. Softcover. 0856687413 . Faint crease to front wrap else fine. ; Classical Texts; 240 pages; The Children of Heracles is a powerful and challenging tragedy of exile and supplication. Driven from their homeland by Eurystheus King of Argos the children of Heracles flee as fugitives throughout Greece until they are granted protection in Athens. However their acceptance as political refugees threatens to cause civil revolt among the Athenians and hostile invasion from the Argives. The self-sacrifice of Heracles' daughter ensures a victory for Athens and the Heraclidae but Heracles' mother Alcmene refuses to spare the life of Eurystheus altlhough he is a prisoner of war protected by Athenian law. The play shows the amorality of the powerful and the vulnerability of refugees in the most disturbing terms making for a drama of continuing moral and political relevance to the modern world. . ‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1982. First Edition. Hardcover. 0521210437 . Light soiling to textblock. Includes a few tipped-in reviews. From the library of R. E. Fantham. Very light edgewear to bottom corners. ; Volume 2 Only. ; Vol. 2; 974 pages; The Cambridge History of Classical Literature provides a comprehensive critical survey of the literature of Greece and Rome from Homer till the Fall of Rome. This is the only modern work of this scope; it embodies the very considerable advances made by recent classical scholarship and reflects too the increasing sophistication and vigour of critical work on ancient literature. The literature is presented throughout in the context of the culture and the social and hisotircal processes of which it is an integral part. The overall aim is to offer an authoritative work of reference and appraisal for one of the world's greatest continuous literary traditions. The work is divided into two volumes each with a similar and broadly chronological structure. Among the special features are important introductory chapters by the General Editors on 'Books and Readers' discussing the conditions under which literature was written and read in antiquity. There are also extensive Appendices or Authors and Works giving detailed factual information in a convenient form. Technical annotation is otherwise kept to a minimum and all quotations in foreign languages are translated. . Cambridge University Press hardcover‎
