GREEK PERSONAL NAMES Their Value as Evidence
The British Academy & Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0197262163 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. One corner very lightly bumped else fine. ; Proceedings of the British Academy 104; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; Within the great diversity of their world the assertion of origin was essential to the ancient Greeks in defining their sense of who they were and how they distinguished themselves from neighbours and strangers. Each person's name might carry both identity and origin - 'I am' . . . inseparable from 'I come from' . . . Names have surfaced in many guises and locations - on coins and artefacts embedded within inscriptions and manuscripts - carrying with them evidence even from prehistoric and preliterate times. The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names has already identified more than 200000 individuals. The contributors to this volume draw on this resource to demonstrate the breadth of scholarly uses to which name evidence can be put. These essays narrate the stories of political and social change revealed by the incidence of personal names and cast a fascinating light upon both the natural and supernatural phenomena which inspired them. This volume offers dramatic illumination of the ways in which the ancient Greeks both created and interpreted their world through the specific language of personal names. . Band 25; 244 pages; The lexicon "On syntax" has been preserved in one manuscript of the 10th century - in the precious codex Paris. Coisl. gr. 345. The lexicon was compiled between the end of 6th century and the beginning of 9th century. It is of interest on the one hand because of its 728 quotations mostly from classical authors. On the other hand it is an important witness in the Greek lexicographic tradition. The lexicon is an original work; no previous compilations have been incorporated. The present study represents its relations to the rest of the Greek syntactic lexicons some of which have been transmitted in numerous manuscripts.; Signed by Author . EURIPIDES: THE CHILDREN OF HERACLES With an Introduction Translation and Commentary.
Aris & Phillips. Very Good. 2001. Softcover. 0856687413 . Very light shelfwear. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. Light wear to corners. ; Classical Texts; 240 pages; The Children of Heracles is a powerful and challenging tragedy of exile and supplication. Driven from their homeland by Eurystheus King of Argos the children of Heracles flee as fugitives throughout Greece until they are granted protection in Athens. However their acceptance as political refugees threatens to cause civil revolt among the Athenians and hostile invasion from the Argives. The self-sacrifice of Heracles' daughter ensures a victory for Athens and the Heraclidae but Heracles' mother Alcmene refuses to spare the life of Eurystheus altlhough he is a prisoner of war protected by Athenian law. The play shows the amorality of the powerful and the vulnerability of refugees in the most disturbing terms making for a drama of continuing moral and political relevance to the modern world. . EURIPIDES: HECUBA With Introduction Translation and Commentary
Aris & Phillips. Very Good. 1991. Softcover. 0856682373 . Light bump to base of spine. Light wear to corners. ; The Plays of Euripides; 224 pages; Hecuba in slavery after Troy's fall fails to dissuade Odysseus whose life she once saved from sacrificing her daughter to honour his dead friend Achilles; but the girl dies proudly true to her royal blood in surmounting degradation. Then Hecuba learns of her sons' treacherous murder by a former ally; out of her terrible loss comes determination for revenge which she claims as a right but how just is her horrific cruelty How credible against her earlier characterisation The play has striking effects: the ghost of the murdered son and his murderer subsequently blinded; poignant lyricism; vivid narratives; above all a careful pattern of scenes demonstrating the equivocal power of 'Persuasion man's only sovereign' v.816. Hecuba is both a study of resilience and weakness and a typically Euripidean comment on the uncertain even collapsing values of his time. Text with facing translation commentary and notes. THE ANDROMACHE AND EURIPIDEAN TRAGEDY
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0198152973 . Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. Light bumping to bottom corners. Very minor shelfwear. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 328 pages; The Andromache has long been disparaged despite being a brilliant piece of theater. In this book Dr. Allan draws attention to the neglected artistry of this very impressive and intriguing text. Through careful analysis the Andromache emerges as a play that poses fundamental questions especially about the polarity of Greek and barbarian and the morality of the gods. Dr. Allan shows how the play also challenges revenge as a motive for action and explores the role of women as wives mothers and victims of war be they Greek or Trojan victorious or defeated. These are among the central concerns that make the Andromache a moving and thought-provoking tragedy full of suffering suspense and moral interest. This book contributes both to an appreciation of the Andromache in its own right and to a wider understanding of the variety and quality of Euripides' oeuvre. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

Burnett Anne Pippin
THE ART OF BACCHYLIDES
Harvard University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1985. First Edition. Hardcover. 0674046668 . Very light edgewear to DJ else fine. ; Martin Classical Lectures 29; 224 pages; Anne Burnett shows us the art of Bacchylides in the context of Greek lyric traditions. She discusses the beginnings of choral poetry and the functions of the choral myth; she describes the purposes of the victory song in particular and the practices of Bacchylides and Pindar as they fulfilled their victory commissions. In analyzing individual poems Burnett's approach is two-fold for each ode is seen as a choral performance reflecting archaic cult practice while it is also studied as the expression of a particular poetic vision and sensibility. Thus the formal elements of the Bacchylidean victory songs are recognized as the response of a chorus which must give semi-religious praise to a noble athlete or prize-winning prince in times of increasing democracy. At the same time an artistry and an ethic peculiar to Bacchylides are discovered in the manipulation of fictions and mythic materials. . Harvard University Press hardcover

Garvie A. F.
AESCHYLUS' SUPPLICES Play and Trilogy
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. 0521071828 . Scholar's name to ffep G. De Montmollin. Institution stamp to ffep Dept. Of Classics - University of Toronto - no other markings. Corners bumped. DJ is price-clipped. DJ has light browning to back panel. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 288 pages; This remains the major book on Aeschylus' Supplices its dating and the trilogy to which it belonged. Its first appearance in 1969 was a response to the publication of a papyrus fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt which indicated a late production date the 460s BC for Aeschylus' play. This upset the previous consensus that it was the earliest Greek tragedy to survive: there was Garvie argued no longer good reason to suppose that the play belonged to an early stage in its author's development. The book also examines the evidence for reconstruction of the other lost plays of the trilogy. Garvie remains convinced that even without the additional testimony of the papyrus all the internal from the text of the play points to the 460s though some have tried to pull it back to the 470s because it feels like an early play. Some of the salutary lessons to be drawn from the discovery of the papyrus have still to be learnt. . Cambridge University Press hardcover
