MEMPHIS UNDER THE PTOLEMIES
Princeton University Press. Very Good- in Good dust jacket. 1989. Hardcover. 0691035938 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers to DJ and traces of removed circulation pastedown. A few cellotape stains to inner covers else Book is VG. ; 1.25 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 376 pages; The city of Memphis on the Nile which had often served as capital in the long period preceding Egypt's conquest by Alexander the Great became the country's "second city" following the founding of Alexandria. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists papyrologists and historians of the Hellenistic world including those concerned with religion. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull deified as Osorapis became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure the Sarapieion is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures. . Princeton University Press hardcover

HOMER AND THE EPIC A Shortened Version of 'the Songs of Homer'
Cambridge University Press. Very Good. 1965. Softcover. Minor shelfwear. Back wraps slightly browned. ; 243 pages; This is a shortened and rearranged version of The Songs of Homer. The literature of the western world begins with one of its greatest achievements. The stories of the wrath of Achilles and its consequences and of the wanderings of Odysseus have been admired from ancient times to the present day. The two great epics can be read and enjoyed unreflectingly as tales of adventure; or they can be studied as literature yielding as insight and understanding grow a deeper and more permanent pleasure. Professor Kirk's book is the means to this pleasure. It is a vivid and comprehensive account of the background and development of the Homeric poems and of their quality as literature. The epics are seen primarily as oral poetry sung for centuries by illiterate singers; and from this view rises discussion of the problems of authorship and transmission. The historical archaeological and linguistic evidence is also examined; and the possible contributions of the Mycenaean period and of the subsequent Dark Age are shown in a fresh light. . POIESIS: BIBLIOGRAFIA DELLA POESIA GRECA 2006 2 VOLUME SET Volumes VII: I & II
Fabrizio Serra Editore. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2007. Softcover. 8862271735 . 2 volume set. Unwrapped in plastic. The origin of Poiesis springs from the desire to provide those who cherish an interest in the study of Greek and Byzantine poetry with a tool to search for relevant information enabling readers to undertake a preliminary selection of material to be utilized and also facilitating in-depth study and further research. The Journal offers a yearly survey of all publications in the field of antiquities books journals dissertations miscellanies that are totally or partly devoted to authors and themes of Greek poetry. A fairly extensive article is dedicated to each cited publication from book-length works to brief notes of text criticism thereby enabling readers to gain a clear understanding of the content of the individual studies. The decision to restrict the scope of inquiry to poetry is motivated by the historical distinction between prose and verse that embodies the essence of the literary system in ancient Greece where the canon of the genera is founded on the difference between forms. Poiesis thus aims to combine in a single working tool the best characteristics of the two traditional bibliographic typologies: completeness of information which is an intrinsic feature of bibliographical listings and adequate description of the contents of each single study an intrinsic feature of wider-ranging interpretative surveys. Editorial responsibility for individual authors and sectors of Greek poetic literature is entrusted to sub-editors with a specific background in the given subjects. A Byzantine section is coordinated by Enrico V. Maltese. ; 2 Volume Set; Vol. 7.1-2; 664 pages; Pp. XXXIV-480 I & Pp. XXXII-481-664 II . Fabrizio Serra Editore paperback
