PROFILE OF HORACE
Duckworth & Company. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1982. Hardcover. 0715615912 . Dustjacket spine shows discoloration. Light shelfwear. Former owner's name on ffep. ; In this concise analysis written with elegant wit the greatest living textual critic of Latin authors offers new insight into the poetry of Horace. Horace is best known for his four books of Odes cherished for their lyric grace. His amiable persona is displayed more intimately in the moralizing verses of the Satires and Epistles. In a reading of all the poetry but focusing especially on problematic areas Shackleton Bailey examines Horace's art of self-presentation. A variety of themes are elucidated from the poet's relations with his patron to Roman sexual attitudes. Close scrutiny is given to about thirty passages which he argues have been misread. An appended essay on a notable predecessor the textual scholar Richard Bentley is especially revealing on the art of classical scholarship. ; Classical Life and Letters; 0.67 x 8.81 x 5.68 Inches; 142 pages . Scholten Joseph B.
THE POLITICS OF PLUNDER Aitolians and Their Koinon in the Early Hellenistic Era 279-217 B. C.
University of California Press. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0520201876 . Small black marker to bottom of textblock-- remainder Else fine. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Between 279 and 229 B. C. the Aitolian koinon a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition which views them as backward semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography epigraphy and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political economic and social history of the Hellenistic Era this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories particularly federalism. ; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages . HELLENISTIC POETRY
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0198140401 . Very light creasing to bottom edge of DJ. Light shelfwear and rubbing to DJ. ; Special Edition for Sandpiper books -- reprint of 1988 edition. In this study of the Hellenistic poets of the third century B. C. Hutchinson provides a much-needed picture of the poetry of the period while demonstrating its quality and vitality. The work of the Hellenistic poets in the third century BC has not only an important place in Greek literature but also a particular significance for Latin poetry. Hutchinson explores the works of such writers as Theocritus Callimachus and Apollonius of Rhodes--developing a generalconception of poetry that centers around the poets' handling of tone level and form--and offers a fresh analysis of the influence of Hellenistic poetry on the city of Rome. Despite much technical work on the texts and language of these authors - Theocritus Callimachus Apollonius Rhodius and others - previous literary criticism on most of the major figures is limited in quantity and scope. He explores the work of the individual writers in turn while developing a general conception of the poetry as a whole centred around the poets' handling of tone level and form. The book concludes with a fresh approach to the influence of Hellenistic poets in Rome. All quotations in Greek or Latin have been translated by the author. ; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 392 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover

PLUTARCH
Charles Scribner's Sons. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1973. Hardcover. 0684133512 . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. DJ is price-clipped. Minor bumping to one corner. ; More perhaps than any other single writer Plutarch has been responsible for transmitting to Europe the central historical and moral traditions of classical antiquity. His books have been a formative influence in western civilisation; they retain a direct appeal to which it is easy to respond. Mestrius Plutarchus ca. 46- 127 was a Greek historian biographer and essayist. Born in the small town of Chaeronea in the Greek region known as Boeotia probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world including twice to Rome. Due to his parents' wealth after 67 Plutarchus was able to study philosophy rhetoric and mathematics at the Academy of Athens. He had a number of influential friends including Soscius Senecio and Fundanus both important Senators to whom some of his later writings were dedicated. He lived most of his life at Chaeronea and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. However his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia or priestess/oracle apparently occupied little of his time - he led an active social and civic life and produced an incredible body of writing much of which is still extant. ; Classical Life and Letters; 183 pages . Garland Robert
THE GREEK WAY OF DEATH
Cornell University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1985. Hardcover. 0801418232 . Minor edgewear to DJ top corners. ; Hardly any aspect of Greek culture of its religious and philosophical bases proves as revealing as its way of confronting human mortality and its observances in relation to the dead. Using both historical and anthropological approaches and sources both visual and written Garland describes the extensive and elaborate funerary rituals performed by the Greeks for their dead from the time of Homer to the fourth century BC. The book attempts to revive and re-live the complex texture of feelings provoked in the living by the dead as moment by moment the two shifted their ground in relation to one another. Death for the Greeks was not an instantaneous event rather a process or passage which required strenuous efforts on the part of the living to ensure that the dead achieved full and final transfer to the next world. The central questions which this book attempts to answer are: the extent to which death was a preoccupying concern among the Greeks; the feelings with which the individual may have anticipated his death; the nature of the bonds between the living and the dead; and the light shed by burial practices upon characteristic elements of Greek society. While the beliefs of ordinary Greeks about their ordinary dead from the book's central focus there is also a chapter on "special dead" - the unburied murderers and their victims children and suicides. ; 192 pages . GREEK PHILOSOPHY IN THE NEW MILLENIUM Essays in Honour of Thomas M. Robinson
Academia Verlag. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2004. Hardcover. 3896652052 . Minor knock along back upper board else Fine. ; While appearing to be a conventional Festschrift in honour of a reputed Professor of Philosophy at the University of Toronto this book includes a unique collection of essays by a number of distinguished scholars from an impressive number of countries on current changes in the field of ancient philosophy some might say resistance to change as globalization profoundly affects local culture and the education of new generations seems likely to be transformed in significant ways. The essays have been organized largely in geographical order starting with Professor Robinson's adopted country Canada and ending with the linguistic community and geographical area more strictly linked with what we have become accustomed to call "ancient philosophy": modern Greece. Through our journey which takes us through the Americas the Pacific area Australia Japan China and Europe readers will be pleased to discover how a widening interest in ancient philosophy has recently spread to a remarkable number of "new" countries some of which have traditionally been thought of as on the margins of if not strictly outside the established scholarly community. Although this work is a tribute to a well-known and admired scholar it is also meant to interest the entire scholarly community of ancient primarily Greek philosophy philosophers and classicists alike: readers wanting to inform themselves about the status of ancient philosophy in a changing and multi-faceted world will find here very much to discover. ; Studies in Ancient Philosophy 6; 352 pages . Carney Elizabeth
OLYMPIAS Mother of Alexander the Great
Routledge. Fine with no dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0415333164 . Women of the Ancient World; 221 pages; Modern conventional wisdom knows Olympias as a pitiless and savage woman practitioner of barbaric Dionysian rites compelled by jealousy and ruthless ambition to the murder of her rivals in order to secure her son's succession to the throne of Macedon. In this way she is credited for Alexander the Great's unprecedented achievements-yet the scale of her son's epic story has obscured her own. Such critical accounts of Olympias' actions have made unforgiving and often unfounded judgments of her motivations. This myth however originates from later Hellenic texts to which her strength and tenacity represented an abhorrent contradiction to contemporary gender roles. Later historians have all too often perpetrated this ancient sexual stereotyping by failing to question these sources. In this the first modern biography of Olympias Elizabeth Carney penetrates myth fictional and sexual politics to reveal a fascinating and wholly misunderstood figure. Through a close and critical assessment of the sources Olympias is humanized as she is placed in the context ofhen own brutal political world. Looking separately at: The role of Greek religion in Olympias' life Literary and artistic traditions about Olympias found throughout the later ancient periods and Varying representations of Olypias found in the major ancient sources .
