Basil Blackwell. 1972. Hardcover. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. Former owner's bookplate to front inner cover.; 143 pages; Provides a massive reinforcement for Livy's Cicero's and Mommsen's view of the early Roman criminal courts-- namely that they were indeed the assembly of the people acting as a court of appeal against a magisterial sentence. THE EPIGRAMS OF RUFINUS; Edited with an Introduction and Commentary
Cambridge University Press. 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. Very light shelfwear else Fine.; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries; 124 pages; Nothing is known of the Greek poet Rufinus other than that he was the author of a collection of thirty-nine epigrams. In fact he is such an insubstantial figure that his date has been placed at various points within nearly half a millennium. Professor Page here presents a text of Rufinus' poems and a concise commentary on them. In his introduction he considers the criteria by which a date may be established and finds evidence in favour of the fourth century AD. . 0521217679 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

GREEK OARED SHIPS 900-322 B.C.

Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears now protected in mylar. Light browning to DJ. DJ is price-clipped.; This book is written in the belief that a proper understanding of Greek civilization in antiquity requires some knowledge of its background of seafaring. A knowledge of nautical practice is required for an understanding of some passages of Greek poetry and prose writing and for a correct interpretation of numerous historical events. This is an attempt at a thorough study of the evidence both literary and archaeological. Modern reference books tend to repeat the misconceptions of nineteenth-century scholars. In contrast Mr Morrison and Mr Williams have written a scholarly and scientific study of the subject. They collect in this volume evidence for Greek oared ships between 900 and 322 BC. The book is primarily a catalogue of decorated pottery and quotations from literature and from naval inventories. The pottery is illustrated by diagrams and plates; and the quotations are given in full.; 356 pages . 0521057701 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

STATE SOCIETY AND POPULAR LEADERS IN MID-REPUBLICAN ROME; 241-167 BC
Routledge. 1996. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; State Society and Popular Leaders deals with the incorporation of the lower classes into the governing system of ancient Rome. In 287 the Hortensian law made the decisions of the plebs binding on the whole people. This event is often referred to as the great plebeian victory a landmark in Roman history. In this original study Rachel Feig Vishnia maintains that the real turning point in the relations between the plebs and the patricians can be found eighty years earlier. THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS
Cambridge University Press. 1966. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.; 23pp of photos 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor and the discovery of the site of Kastabos whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short well attended festival. The excavations show that although it was an Ionic temple the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia such as that at Ephesus has been modified and the design is somewhat similar in plan and proportion to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes."; 180 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

Scholten, Joseph B
THE POLITICS OF PLUNDER; Aitolians and Their Koinon in the Early Hellenistic Era 279-217 B. C.
University of California Press. 2000. Hardcover. Very Good in Fine dust jacket. Small black marker to bottom of textblock-- remainder Else fine. Dustjacket is protected in mylar.; Between 279 and 229 B. C. the Aitolian koinon a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition which views them as backward semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography epigraphy and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political economic and social history of the Hellenistic Era this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories particularly federalism.; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages . 0520201876 . THE GOVERNOR AND HIS SUBJECTS IN THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE
Brill Academic Publishers. 2006. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. This book presents new insights into the dynamics of the relationship between governors and provincial subjects in the Later Roman Empire with a focus on the provincial perspective. Based on literary legal epigraphic and artistic materials the author deals with questions such as how provincials communicated their needs to governors how they expressed both their favorable and critical opinions of governors’ behavior and how they rewarded ‘good’ governors. Provincial expectations a continuous dialogue interdependence reciprocity and ceremonial routine play key roles in this study that not only leads to a better understanding of Late Roman provincial administration but also of the successful functioning of an empire as large as that of Rome.; Mnemosyne Supplements ; History and Archaeology of Classical Antiquity 275; 220 pages . 9004150706 . ANNAEANA TRAGICA; Notes On the Text of Seneca's Tragedies
Brill Academic Publishers. 2004. Hardcover. Fine in No Dust Jacket dust jacket. This volume is a companion to the author's new Loeb edition of Seneca's tragedies vol. 1 2002; vol. 2 2004. It offers reasons for his editorial choices and explains his interpretations of the text as reflected in his translation. Hercules Oetanus and Octavia now generally regarded as imitations of Senecan drama are both included. The volume is intended to be read alongside Otto Zwierlein's Kritische Kommentar published in 1986. In the intervening years there has been much new work pertaining to Seneca's text including full-scale editions with commentary on individual plays such as Keulen's Troades Töchterle's Oedipus and Ferri's Octavia. Annaeana Tragica seeks to supplement and advance Zwierlein's work in the light of this new material. An appendix reviews the scholarly controversy concerning the anapaestic odes of these plays and offers fresh evidence relevant to the issue.; Mnemosyne Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 293 pages . 9004140034 .
