THUCYDIDES' PENTEKONTAETIA AND OTHER ESSAYS
J. C. Gieben. Fine with no dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 9050634877 . Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Archaia Hellas; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.25 Inches; 287 pages; In this book Professor Pritchett offers five original essays under the titles: Thucydides Pentekontaetia; Thucydides 1.61.3-5; Diodoros Pentekontaetia; The Solar Year of Thucydides; Aetiology sans Topography. The initial lengthy essay focuses on seven crux passages in which Thucydides in Book 1 describes the growth of Athenian power maintaining against recent critics that they are presented in chronological order. The study combines a review of the manuscript tradition with regard to corruptions in toponyms and numerals and a personal autopsy of the ancient sites. In a separate essay Pritchett adduces new arguments in defense of Thucydides seasonal chronological scheme. In the last essay he takes sharp issue with a recent publication which attempts to attribute the origin of the ancient accounts of the Messenian wars and the battles of Hysiai Thyreatis and Phigaleia to legends evolved at festivals. . These studies are a by-product of Pritchett's studies on Greek military practices and Greek topography and will be of interest to students of Greek historiography since all involve problems of text and the veracity of the historians. POWER PAIDEIA & PYTHAGOREANISM Greek Identity Conceptions of the Relationship between Philosophers and Monarchs and Political Ideas in Philostratus Life of Apollonius
J. C. Gieben. Fine with no dust jacket. 1995. Hardcover. 905063236X . Dutch Monographs on Ancient History and Archaeology; 10.25 x 1 x 6.5 Inches; 286 pages; The Athenian sophist Philostratus completed a romanticised biography of Apollonius of Tyana in the second or third decade of the third century A. D. One of the most striking aspects of the presentation of this firstcentury Pythagorean sage and miracleworker in the Vita Apollonii VA is his role as politically active philosopher. Not only does the protagonist of the VA regularly intervene in situa-tions of conflict in Greek cities and instruct their citi-zens on how they ought to live together but he also appears in contact with Parthian and Indian kings and Roman emperors. The present study deals with this promi-nent facet of Philostratus portrait of the Tyanean sage. There are three main issues. The first is the question of the extent to which the Apollonius tradition provided support for the image of the contacts of the protagonist of the VA with cities and monarchs. The second is consideration of how the author dealt with and elaborated these elements in his source material. The third is the question of to what extent the protagonist of the VA may be regarded as a spokesman for the explicit political views of Philostratus. In other words the aim is to analyse the image of the protagonist of the VA as a politically active philosopher as the result of the interaction between the traditions associated with a sage and miracleworker who was regarded as a representative of Pythagorean wisdom on the one hand and the paideia cultural baggage and mentality of a sophist on the other. . SIGNIFICANT AND THE INSIGNIFICANT Five Studies in Herodotus' View of History
J. C. Gieben. Fine with no dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 9050632963 . Unwrapped in Plastic. ; Amsterdam Studies in Classical Philology; 154 pages; Although it is widely recognised that Solons thoughts on human life 1.30-32 are important to a correct understanding of Herodotus work little attention has been given to their narratological meaning. On the basis of a careful interpretation of five episodes this monograph argues that Solons advice look to the end establishes the viewpoint from which Herodotus stories are to be understood. This viewpoint leads to surprising conclusions as to what is and is not important to the development of history. It casts doubts especially on the magnificent role of Athens and its democracy. . J. THE ANATOMY OF ERROR Ancient Military Disasters and Their Lessons for Modern Strategists
St. Martin's Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0312050518 . Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear else Fine. ; Two more books of military history written for general audiences. Strauss and Ober discuss strategic failure in the classical world in terms of defeated generals and political leaders from Xerxes of Persia to Julian the Apostate. These losers share a common incapacity to consider and overcome unexamined assumptions about themselves and their enemies say the authors. But the authors go on to defend good decision-making in relentlessly Clausewitzian terms that overlook the essential differences between the state systems of 19th-century Europe and the ancient Mediterranean. Such presentmindedness is unlikely to liberate the study of ancient history from its specialist ghetto. Karl proposes to describe situations from Thermopylae to Dien Bien Phu in which "an elite unit of soldiers stands to the last men with little hope of victory. " His definition of "elite" is extremely broad. The mixed bag of Germans and other Europeans that defended Berlin in 1945 hardly qualifies as an elite in the sense of the Theban Sacred Band. Moreover instead of concentrating on the composition motivation and behavior of these doomed units Karl writes generalized campaign history with the last stand itself sometimes dismissed in a few paragraphs. The Anatomy of Error is flawed by a restrictive analytic structure; Glorious Defiance fails to progress beyond descriptive narrative. Neither can be recommended except as supplements for large collections. ; 8.5 x 1 x 5.75 Inches; 272 pages . St. Martin's Press hardcover

THE ROMAN FAMILY IN ITALY Status Sentiment Space
Oxford University Press. Fine. 1999. Softcover. 0198152833 . National University Series; 0.87 x 9.06 x 6.14 Inches; 400 pages; The family continues to be seen as a central institution in Roman as well as modern Western society. The Roman family is often used as a stereotype sometimes of severity sometimes of decadence with its decline often cited as a cause of wider decline and fall. Definitions and concepts continue to be modified and nuanced however as the availability of new evidence and new methodologies make possible a much less simplistic picture. In this volume the study of family draws on a wide range of disciplines to develop the intertwined themes of status sentiment and space. For example on status there are contributions about Junian Latins and a survey of senators' monuments while sentiment is represented by a gloomy but convincing picture of old age and a paper on the sentimental ideal which argues that conflict as well as concord is a feature of family life. Space is represented among others by the contribution on who commemorates whom in Roman Italy pointing up the regional variations in custom and the difficulties in tracing complete families. The final contributions focus on the house: how people lived in the Roman house the use of rooms and the artefacts that might indicate this use. The book makes use of many types of evidence from the legal and literary to the iconographical and archaeological. Visual and material evidence play an important role in reconstructing real lives in considerable colour and variety. The book moves beyond the city of Rome to the rest of Roman Italy and even into the provinces just as Roman culture moved outwards and mingled with other cultures. Chronologically too there are new directions towards the later Empire and Christianity. So although the contributors do not abandon any of the territory already gained in Rome nor literary and epigraphical sources nor the late Republic or early Empire there is an exciting sense of new discovery. . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.61 x 8.46 x 5.5 Inches; 264 pages; The Aeneid can strike one as a relatively conventional epic an objective heroic tale of Rome's beginnings. Vergil designed it so that it might read in this way. This is one epic `voice' that he wished us to hear. But there are `further voices' and these may be disturbing even shocking as they add to comment upon question and occasionally subvert the implications of the epic voice. This is a detailed examination of Vergil's method of intruding such further voices. . Oxford Clarendon Press paperback

AN ENQUIRY INTO THE LIFE AND WRITINGS OF HOMER 1736

Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. ; Reprint of the 2nd edition; Anglistica & Americana; 1735. Blackwell a Scottish classical scholar first published this work anonymously. The work was intended to explain the causes of the superiority of Homer to all the poets who preceded or followed him. It shows considerable research and contains many curious and interesting details but its want of method made Bentley say that when he had gone through half of it he had forgotten the beginning and when he had finished the reading of it he had forgotten the whole. .
