EXCERPT: Preface - The purpose of this book is to examine historically and developmentally mass media systems in Canada. This examination flows out of university curricular studies that began in Canada following World War II and accelerated dramatically during the past quarter century. It is important to point out that such studies are not necessarily recognized as a developed and clearly focussed discipline: rather communication studies is a developing area of study. The essential problem with this definitional difficult revolves around the many research facets of the road area of communication. For example these facets include engineering law journalism psychology sociology history economics and political science among others. La Cartographie au Canada Depuis 1938
Ottawa: le Ministere des Mines et des Ressources 1949. SUB-TITLE: Prepare pour la reunion de L'Union Internationale de Geographie Lisbonne Portugal Avril 1949. Les organismes prives qui accomplissent ce genre de travail relevant de ministere des Mines et des Ressources; ce sont: la section des Leves topographiques le service des Leves officiels le service d'Hydrographie du Canada et la section du Dessin et de la Reproduction. Le Service geodesique exerce le premier controle sur le dressage des cartes par les Services susmentionnes. Ces cinq Services composent la section des Leves officiels et de la Cartographie don't l'administration dirige et coordonne le travail. Le ministere de la Defense nationale a aussi un service de cartographie de l'Armee qui prepare les cartes topographiques. Le travail s'accomplit en etroite collaboration avec la section des Leves topographiques et les cartes sont distribuees par le ministere des Mines et des Ressources. Des cartes speciales indiquant la geologie les forets et fournissant des details sur l'agriculture etc. sont publiees par differents Services ou Ministeres et elles sont ordinairement basees sur des cartes prepares par les organismes susmentionnes. Les Gouvernements provinciaux preparent des cartes a des echelles speciales don't ils se servent dans leurs enquetes sur leurs resources et a la mise en valeur de ces dernieres ou pour d'autres fins particulieres. Le present rapport toutefois ne traitera que du travail de cartographie accompli par le Gouvernement canadien. La Colombie-Britannique a un Service qui s'occupe de preparer des cartes topographiques modeles a l'echelle de 1 mille au pouce mais ces cartes sont reproduites et imprimees par l'Etat. On peut diviser en quatre sections le travail de cartographie accomplice par le Gouvernement canadien: I. La production des cartes topographiques II. La production des cartes aeronautiques III. La production des cartes hydrographiques IV. La compilation et la production de cartes geographiques a petite echelles. Nous allons passer en revue les progress faits au Canada depuis 1938 dans la cartographie sous ces quatre rubriques. On doit se rappeler toutefois que la cartographie a pris de l'ampleur si rapidement depuis la fin de la guerre qu'il est impossible de donner tous les details précis sur plusieurs recents travaux de cartographie; il nous faudra necessairement traiter plusieurs phases d'une maniere generale.
