‎THE GREEK AND ROMAN CRITICS‎

‎Former owner's name to ffep. Light shelfwear to book. DJ laminate lifting along spine. DJ spine sunned. Light edgewear to DJ. ; During the thousand years which separate Homer from Plotinus, the Greeks and Romans not only created two great literatures and most of our literary genres; they also developed theories of literature and methods of criticism. These, though very different from our own, have nevertheless greatly influenced modern thinking, especially during the early centuries of our modern literatures. Poets like Pindar, Aristophanes and Horace, philosophers like Plato, aristotle and Philodemus, orators like Cicero and Quintilian, literary scholars like Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Longinus, all these have left us records of their various points of view. In this book Professor Grube, who is a recognized authority in this field, gives us a clear, full and reliable analysis of the ancient critical texts, and traces the birth and developments of critical thinking thoughout the classical centuries. ; 372 pages‎

It is named after its speakers, the 'Tsakonians', which is held to be an alteration of 'Laconians' - although Tsakonians themselves did not traditionally use this ethnonym. It is said to be from Exo-Lakones (meaning outer Lakonians) and morphed to Tsakones. ; Collection De L'Institut Néo-Hellénique De L'Université De Paris, Tome II; 550 pages‎

‎THE PRIVATE ORATIONS OF THEMISTIUS Translated, Annotated and Introduced‎

‎Very light bump to 1 corner else book is fine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; Themistius was a philosopher, a prominent Constantinopolitan senator, and an adviser to Roman emperors during the fourth century A. D. In this first translation of Themistius's private orations to be published in English, Robert J. Penella makes accessible texts that shed significant light on the culture of Constantinople and, more generally, the eastern Roman empire during the fourth century. The sixteen speeches translated here are equipped with ample annotations and an informative introduction, making them a valuable resource on the late antique period, as well as on Greek intellectual history and oratory. In Themistius's public orations, he played the role of imperial panegyrist, but in the "private" or unofficial orations presented here, the senator concerns himself with apologetics, rhetorical and philosophical programs, material of autobiographical interest, and ethical themes. The speeches are valuable as evidence for the political, social, philosophical, religious, and literary history of fourth century Byzantium, and as examples of pagan ideology and eloquence in the newly Christianized court. Themistius argues, among other things, that the philosopher should be involved in public affairs, that the lessons of philosophy should be broadcast to the masses, and that it is appropriate for the philosopher to be an effective orator in order to circulate his teachings. ; Transformation of the Classical Heritage; 1.12 x 9.32 x 6.29 Inches; 258 pages‎

‎GRAMMAR OF THE GOTHIC LANGUAGE And the Gospel of St. Mark, Selections from the Other Gospels and the Second Epistle to Timothy, with Notes and Glossary‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Very minor bump to base of spine. ; 383 pages; The author of several Old English and Old High German primers and grammars, Joseph Wright wrote the present book as an alternative to revising his earlier Gothic Primer for a third edition. The Grammar provides a comprehensive knowledge of Gothic and understanding of comparative Germanic grammar, essential to anyone studying the ancient Germanic languages. By way of readings, the book provides the Greek texts of the gospels of St matthew (Chapter VI) and St. Luke (Chapter XV) along with the Gothic translations by Ulfilas (AD 311-383) , bishop of the Goths. Interesting for students of comparative philology. A knowledge of Gothic is indispensable to students of the oldest periods of other Germanic languages, this book will be of interest to students whose interests are mainly philological and linguistic. This Grammar provides a comprehensive knowledge of Gothic and an understanding of comparative Germanic grammar. If Wulfila had not translated the very Bible into Gothic, we wouldn't have today any tangible hint of the existence of this early Germanic language.‎
