Pergamentband der Zeit mit durchgezogenen Bünden, umgeschlagenen Deckelkanten, goldgeprägtem Rückentitel und rot gefärbtem Schnitt.‎

‎Erste Ausgabe des Maßstäbe setzenden mathematischen Lexikons. - Poggendorff II, 1355. - DSB XIV, 482ff. - Cantor, Geschichte der Mathematik III, 270f. - Einband gleichmäßig gedunkelt, Kanten etwas stärker; gering angestaubt und fleckig. Bezug des Hinterdeckels im oberen Bereich leicht wellig. - Auf dem vorderen Vorsatz alter Besitzeintrag ("Ex Libris D.F. Feldmanni") und längere Widmung aus den 50er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts. Vorsätze und Frontispiz verso etwas stockfleckig. Durchgehend gleichmäßig gebräunt, ansonsten bis auf ganz vereinzelte kleine Braunflecken erfreulich sauber. - Das schöne allegorische Kupferstich-Frontispiz (Minerva-Athene mit Astronomia und Geometria samt astronomisch-mathematischer Instrumente) tadellos und in sehr gutem Abdruck. - Schönes und wohlerhaltenes Exemplar in einem guten zeitgenössischen Einband; in diesem Zustand selten. - Christian Freiherr von Wolff (1679-1754), neben Leibniz die überragende Gestalt der rationalistisch-teleologischen Aufklärungsphilosophie in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts, war "der Sohn eines einfachen, wenn auch gebildeten Breslauer Handwerkers. Er widmete sich der Philosophie und der Mathematik. Letzerer hatte er große Lehrerfolge, ersterer sehr wechselnde Lebensschicksale zu verdanken. Seit 1703 lehrte er in Leipzig, von 1707-1723 in Halle. Religionswidriger Bestrebungen angeklagt wurde er 1723 bei Androhung des Stranges aus den preussischen Landen verwiesen. Der Vertriebene fand an der Universität Marburg bereitwillige Aufnahme, bis Friedrich der Grosse ihn bei Regierungsantritte 1740 nach Halle zurückberief. Dort bleib Wolf bis zu seinem Tode [?] Das Werk [Mathematisches Lexicon] leistet annähernd dasjenige, was in dem weitschweifigen Titel versprochen wird. Die Kunstausdrücke sind erklärt. Verweisungen auf Nachschlagebücher, unter welchen Wolf seine eigenen bevorzugt, weil sie viel verbreitet, daher leicht zugänglich sind, wie er glaube, auch leicht verständlich seien, werden überall gegeben. Wo es um die neuen Theile der Mathematik, insbesondere um die Infinitesimalrechnung sich handelt, tritt die entschiedenste Parteinahme für Leibniz zu Tage" (Cantor). - "At Halle, Wolff lectured on mathematics and algebra, building and fortification, as well as experimental and theoretical physics; a glimpse of the kind of courses given may be obtained from one of the earliest writings of this period, his popular handbook 'Anfangsgründe aller mathematischen Wissenschaften', 1710" (DSB). - Das Lexikon ist über seinen mathematischen Gehalt von weiterem kultur- und wissenschaftshistorischem Interesse, da es (in der Breite der Anlage Walchs zeitnahem 'Philosophischen Lexikon' nicht unähnlich) Themen wie Astronomie, Astrologie, Ornamentik, Ingenieurswesen und Baukunst, Meteorologie, Bergbau und vor allem Fortifikations- und Kriegskunst behandelt und heute teilweise curios anmutende Artikel enthält wie beispielsweise "Cloaca, das heimliche Gemach oder Abtritt" (als bauliches Problem), "Characteres chronologici" (Prognostica), "Astrometeorologia" (Astrologische Witterungsvorhersage), "Ancker-Kugel" (Brandbombe mit Widerhaken) und "Laconicum" (Schwitz-Stube, nach Vitruv ein "Ort, wo man schwitzet").‎
