Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast An Important 1888 First Edition Work Documenting the Gullah Creole Dialect
1888. African-Americana Jones Charles C. Negro Myths from the Georgia Coast. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company 1888. First Edition. Ex libris. 7" x 4.75" inches. Written in the Gullah dialect of the region which was especially prominent in this time. The myths tend to be fables with a moral lesson usually involving anthropomorphic animals. The Gullah dialect which this book was written in is a Creole dialect owing heavily to West African tribal languages and spoken primarily along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts including urban Savannah and Charleston. The author of this work Charles Colcock Jones Jr. was the son of a planter who grew up conversing with his family's slaves in the Geechee dialect. Jones's work is considered one of the most valuable preservations of the Gullah dialect from this time period. Gullah has been gradually incorporated into standard black southern dialect over time though it is still spoken today to some extent in the region. This book has bumped corners and some foxing on front pastedown but overall is in very good condition. unknown
