Hemingway Ernest; Gurrea Manuel Spanish Translation
Al Otro Lado Del Rio y Entre Los Arboles Across the River and Into the Trees
Calle Nilo Mexico: Editora Mexico S. A. 1956. Rare Mexican edition published November 30 1956. Spanish translation by Manuel Gurrea. Signed and inscribed at title page: "To Eduardo best wishes Ernest Hemingway". Acquired from Old World Collectibles experienced Canadian collector of rare Cuban books items and artifacts of historical interest. Blue pebbled boards stamped silver cover and spine titles somewhat offset some edge wear bump offset titles. Pages very good tanning; no writing. Bind good; hinges intact. Dj some edge wear rub; protected in new clear sleeve. Enchanting and colorful wrap-around jacket painting depicts gondola guided by helmsman through tunnel of bridge silhouetted Venice and orange sunset in background. Summary in Spanish at front flap. Ernest Hemingway's first novel in a decade - since For Whom the Bell Tolls - holds the essential emotion of that phenomenally successful book. In 'Across the River and into the Trees' there is a concept of the same intensity. Like the story of the Spanish civil war which was centered upon a microcosm of action - the tense last days of an American in the midst of a group of guerrilla fighters this story limits its scope to a very short span in the life of an American. This story builds its bridge not of days but of hours and it is even more charged with feeling. For many readers it will evoke a memorable earlier novel A Farewell to Arms because the background again is Italy and again it is war. This newer war however is already in the past. The fighting is over; the reader hears only its echoes. Venice is the scene. Colonel Richard Cantwell of the United States Army is the principal figure and perhaps the most complex character Hemingway ever presented. Hemingway said of his novel ". start slow then increase in pace till it becomes impossible to stand. I bring emotion up to where you cant stand it then we level off so we wont have to provide oxygen tents for the readers." - The New Yorker 1950. 3/4" x 7 3/4" design. 322 pages. Insured post. Signed by Author. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book. Editora Mexico, S. A. Hardcover

Hemingway Ernest; Guarnedo Jose Mora y Hausner John E. Spanish Translation
Fiesta Spanish Edition of The Sun Also Rises
Buenos Aires Argentina: Santiago Rueda 1944. 1944 Spanish edition of The Sun Also Rises. Thick paper wraps red and black cover and spine titles moderate edge wear some spine chip. Pages very good; toned. Bind good; cloth ropes at top bottom of spine. Soild intact example. Hemingway's great post-World War I novel first major work and the classic novel of the "lost generation". A vivid exploration of the moral wasteland of Europe in the Twenties and of the sterility and despair of postwar life. The hero Jake Barnes has suffered a war injury leaving him impotent. Hopelessly in love with the seductive and flamboyant Lady Brett Ashley Jake leaves Paris to accompany Brett her drunken fianc and an American boxer to Pamplona watching as she falls for a young bullfighter. The expatriate crowd that Hemingway portrays so vividly passes their lives in an aimless alcoholic haze against which the local fiestas and the running of the bulls seem by contrast full of vitality--a quality that is alien to them. The settings are romantic - the bull ring the Paris streets the bars cafs and hotels - but Hemingway invests them all with a disillusion that undercuts the glamour of expatriate life. 265 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Soft Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Book. Santiago Rueda Paperback
