James Robert Jaime Nicolopulos 1945 2010
The Poetics of Empire in the Indies: Prophecy and Imitation in La Arucana and Os Lusiadas
xvi332 pages with index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. In The Poetics of Empire in the Indies James Nicolopulos investigates literary representations of sixteenth-century Iberian colonialism and imperialism by analyzing Alonso de Ercilla s "La Araucana" a narrative poem that recounts the initial phases of the Spanish conquest of Chile in the mid-sixteenth century and Luis de Camoens s "Os Lusíadas" the epic celebration of early Portuguese maritime expansion in the Indian Ocean and beyond. Delving into the epic traditions of the Classical Medieval and Renaissance periods Nicolopulos outlines practices of imitation within the two poems focusing specifically on the employment of epic models in "La Araucana." Having made powerful connections to Ercilla s literary and critical predecessors Nicolopulos demonstrates that the contemporaneous publication of "Os Lusíadas" further affected the content and presentation of "La Araucana." In so doing he elucidates the rivalries poetic political commercial between Spain and Portugal during this age of expansion. An investigation into imitation and representation in colonial texts The Poetics of Empire in the Indies offers new connections between two early literary representations of Iberian imperialism. Condition: A near fine copy in like jacket. Penn State University Press hardcover

JAVIER LEIBIUSKY.
L'Immigration Judéo-Espagnole à Buenos-Aires: Histoire d'une commuunauté invisible, (1876-1930).
New French Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In French. 264 p. L'Immigration Judéo-Espagnole à Buenos-Aires: Histoire d'une commuunauté invisible, (1876-1930). History of the emigration of the Sephardis to Buenos Aires (Argentina), 1876-1930.

ISBN 9782711870783. Joan Miró is rightly considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Whether it is a sign, a colour, Miró brings out a poetic universe full of metamorphoses. Friend of many poets from Apollinaire to Jacques Prévert, he is very attracted by all forms of poetry. The surrealist manifesto will have great importance in his pictorial research. He considered that the dream is the expression of deep impulses that he could transcribe into an artistic form, a happy juxtaposition between reality and unreality. The chronological journey of the artist?s life over seven decades is retraced here: paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures rub shoulders in order to highlight an itinerary and a technical and stylistic evolution marked by incessant renewal (expressionist, retailer, surrealist, wild?). An anthology of prose texts and poems written by the poets with whom the artist was constantly associated, Louis Aragon, Tristan Tzara, Max Jacob, René Char, Jacques Dupin, accompanies this visual journey. The catalogue thus (re)discovers the immense and varied creation of Joan Miró, a painter committed to all the important questions of the 20th century. Exhibition at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais from October 3, 2018 to February 4, 2019.
