Spanish Libraries and Archive
Historia y Organizacion de Archivos y Bibliothecas
1850. 8vo. 215 x 160 mm. 8 ½ x 6 ¼ inches. 306 leaves chapters separated by blanks. 19th century leather backed marbled paper boards; inner hinge cracked edges bumped some abrasion to the head of the spine; sound. Beautifully written manuscript volume containing an extensive discussion of library management and practices written by an anonymous Spanish author in the middle of the 19th century. This dissertation organized in 70 chapters begins with a discussion of the library profession and its importance to civil society. His first chapters describe the "Archive" with reference to Spanish monastic governmental and diplomatic collections that have been preserved. He focuses his attention on Aragon Mallorca Navarra and Santiago. He turns to France to furnish some interested information on the archives in Paris before getting into the chapters on classification of materials and the creation of inventories. After nearly 200 leaves of text on the subject of archives the authors turns his attention to libraries. From the beginning he takes a historical approach focusing his attention on both books and manuscripts mentioning the collections at Cambridge University. Paleography is a subject he spends some time describing and then he moves into the history of printing typography Gutenberg and the spread of printing to Spain. The final dozen chapters are devoted to the rules for managing a library lessons in classification and inventory control. He quotes from both DeBure and Brunet in his lessons on cataloguing. A rather remarkable piece of work thought to be unpublished. An examination of both United States and Spanish national collections turned up no reference to this anonymous piece of library scholarship. unknown books

SPANISH LOUISIANA.
Real Decreto que Previene las Reglas y Condiciones con que se puede hacer el Comercio desde Espana a la Provincia de la Luisiana
Madrid: Gabriel Ramirez 28th March 1768. 8 pages 11 x 8 1/8 inches. Woodcut arms on the title-page. Bound in modern plain paper wrappers. A Royal decree attempting to regulate commerce between Spain and her new territory of Louisiana by excluding all commerce with France and her colonies. Spain had secretly acquired Louisiana from France at the Treaty of Fontainebleau on 3rd November 1762 which followed the Battle of Signal Hill the last battle in the French and Indian War which had decisively confirmed British control of Canada. Meanwhile the Seven Years War continued to rage and having already lost Canada to Britain King Louis XV of France proposed to King Charles III of Spain that France should give Spain "the country known as Louisiana as well as New Orleans and the island in which the city is situated" to keep it from falling into British hands. In fact the agreement covered all of "Louisiana": the entire valley of the Mississippi River from the Appalachians to the Rockies. The Treaty of Paris finally ended the war with Britain and divided Louisiana at the Mississippi: the eastern half was ceded to Britain while the western half and New Orleans were nominally retained by France; Spain ceded Florida to Britain and western Louisiana became Spanish by way of compensation. One condition of the Treaty of Paris provided for a period of 18 months in which French Canadian colonists who did not want to live under British rule could freely emigrate to other French colonies. Inevitably many of these emigrants moved to Louisiana where they were horrified to discover that had become Spanish a fact which did not become formally known until 1764 when Louis XV informed the governor Charles Philippe Aubry in a letter. Understandably the French colonists in Louisiana were reluctant to accept Spanish governance and after the Spanish attempted to control commerce with this decree which excluded all commerce with France and her colonies they expelled the first Spanish governor and famous navigator Antonio Ulloa in the Rebellion of 1768 that followed. Alejandro O'Reilly an Irish migr suppressed the rebellion and formally raised the Spanish flag in 1769. In 1800 the territory was retroceded to France under Napoleon together with six warships in exchange for the Kingdom of Etruria which Charles IV of Spain presented to his nephew the Duke of Parma who in 1803 sold it to the United States. Palau 251076; Streeter I 147 Catalogued by Kate Hunter. [Madrid]: Gabriel Ramirez, 28th March, 1768. unknown

Madrid: Por la viuda de Alonso Martini 1617. 4344 leaves plus several pen and ink illustrations. Folio. Later speckled calf maroon gilt morocco label spine gilt. Covers with slight wear and scuffing at extremities. Faint dampstain in lower margin. Occasional contemporary manuscript notes and marks. Overall internally clean. Very good. A comprehensive list of rules addressed to ship captains governing the proper provisioning of Spanish vessels based in Sicily and Naples both then under Spanish rule. The text includes a bevy of rules expense guidelines and more and offers a fine window into the near- obsessive attention to detail that marked the administration of the Spanish military at the peak of its powers. Of particular interest are several pen and ink sketches that include tools a ship in dry dock and storage bins as well as two much larger harbor plans of Palermo and Naples. Each drawing is keyed to a printed description of the location and shows fortifications lookouts and in the case of Naples dormitories. These are charming and well accomplished. Good evidence of the Spanish navy at work at the height of empire with rules which certainly applied to vessels in the Americas as well. Extremely rare and not on OCLC. SPANISH NETHERLANDS BILAIN ANTOINE.
Reginae Christianissmae Iura in Ducatum Brabantiae et Alios Ditionis Hispanicae Principatus
1667. No place 1667. Titlepage iii293pp. Contemporary mottled calf bottom of spine damaged. A nice wide-margined copy of this work. The War of Devolution 16671668 saw Louis XIV's French armies overrun the Hapsburg controlled Spanish Netherlands. Louis's claims to the Spanish Netherlands were tenuous. His wife Maria Theresa the daughter of Philip IV had renounced her rights of a Spanish inheritance in return for a large dowry at the time of her marriage. The dowry had yet to be paid however. When Philip died in 1665 Louis' lawyers justified Louis's possible claims by arguing that while Spanish laws of succession meant the throne of Philip IV would pass to his son Charles II ancient laws of Duchy of Brabant ruled that the Spanish Netherlands could "devolve" to Philip's daughter from his first marriage Louis's wife. France pressed the claim in 1667 and the present work was a kind of war announcement. The Latin edition was published the same year as the French one. unknown
