'An utterly unreadable book': Edward Bouverie Pusey Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford and a leading figure of the Oxford Movement. Autograph Letter Signed to a peer discussing his pamphlet and book on 'Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister'.
30 June 1880. No place. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. Sixty-one lines of text in Pusey’s distinctive minuscule and not always easily decipherable hand. Aged and worn. The item has been repaired after damp damage with the second leaf laid down on a piece of thick paper. Loss of a few words of text. Pusey begins by stating that his pamphlet ‘God’s Prohibition of the Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister’ 1860 which he believes is out of print is ‘more readable than the longer book’ ‘Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister’ 1849 of whose ‘very heavy form’ he gives a description. He explains why he feels it would be ‘hardly fair to republish it’. He discusses a ‘proposed change in the law of marriage’ before stating of his two works: ‘If your Lordship knew of any young man who would remould either of these he would be most welcome.’ He has 250 copies of the book he ‘could gladly place at your Lordship’s disposal’. He discusses what would need to be done to ‘recast it’ with reference to ‘social relations’. ‘I have looked again at my book and felt sure that no one would read it unless he wishes to carefully the whole question. It is dry. I remember that I felt that I was undergoing a sharp cross examination by Dr Lushington . It is an utterly unreadable book’. He continues with reference to a speech in the House of Lords and ‘Mr Keble’s pamphlet’. Pusey’s pamphlet was republished in the year following his death. 30 June 1880. No place. unknown

Scrap of paper 9 x 9cm remnants of laying down on reverse clear text as follows: "I should be glad to have the Statuta Aularia if you have them to hand short line though this paragraph Line crossed out - indecipherable I shd be glad to know of any new German works or 'Jewish' prob. or any improved editions of the old ones." Note: Statuta Aularia: "statutes made by the University for the government of the Halls" presumably as opposed to 'Colleges'. "The Oxford University Act 1854 and the university statute De aulis privatis On private Halls of 1855 allowed any Master of Arts aged at least 28 years to open a private hall after obtaining a licence to do so.3 The longest lived of the thirteen private halls was Charsley's Hall 1862–1891" Wikipedia. And the only book in which he was involved associated with the Bodleian that I've traced is "Treasures of Oxford : containing poetical compositions by the ancient Jewish authors in Spain : and compiled from manuscripts in the Bodleian Library Oxford / Part I" published in 1851 by Groombridge. Printed handbill produced for display regarding the Regius Professor of Hebrew's 'Course of Lectures in the Minor Prophets' and 'Three Elementary Hebrew Classes'.
Christ Church University of Oxford . 5 May 1848. Printed on one side of a 29 x 22.5 cm leaf of wove paper. Heavily worn with closed tears creasing and a couple of closed holes. No loss of text and would respond well to archival repair. 21 lines of heavily-leaded text attractively laid out in three point sizes. Begins: 'The Regius Professor of Hebrew proposes to resume his Course of Lectures in the Minor Prophets on Wednesday the 10th instant at Two o'Clock.' A paragraph describes the different aims of the 'Three Elementary Hebrew Classes' and the document concludes: 'Those who wish to attend the Elementary Lectures are requested to call on the Rev. W. Kay Lincoln College on Tuesday the 9th instant between the hours of Two and Four.' From the papers of the Harington baronets of Ridlington. A manuscript note on the reverse reveals the purpose for which the item was employed: 'Miss Harington's hair Novr 2nd 1848'. No other copy traced. After spending his childhood in the colorful Balat neighborhood, he received a superb education at the prestigious Istanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Men's High School), the University of Istanbul, and the Reserve Officers Training School in Ankara. While still in high school, he began keeping a diary, which he continued during his college years and the time he spent serving as an army dentist in eastern Turkey. Those diaries, contained in this book, provide rare insights into what life was like for minorities - and particularly for Jews - in Turkey during the nineteen thirties and forties. Atatürk's Republic, which most of them ardently supported, had raised their hopes of at last being accepted as fully equal Turkish citizens in every way, but those hopes were cruelly dashed when discrimination and anti-Semitism continued, and even worsened, especially after Atatürk's death in 1938. Not surprisingly, most of Turkey's Jews immigrated to Israel after it won its independence in 1948. That exodus provoked harsh criticism of the Jews in the Turkish press, and the Turkish Jews founded their own newspapers and magazines to respond to those attacks. Shaul was one of the first contributors to Turkey's fledgling Jewish press, and some of his most important articles are included in this volume. He himself moved to Israel in 1950 but continued to write articles for Turkish Jewish publications throughout his life and also authored a book on the folklore of the Turkish Jews. From Balat to Bat Yam is a testament to Eli Shaul's deeply felt patriotism, which consisted not only of love for his native Turkey but insistence that she treat all her citizens as equals".
