‎THE MASKS OF MENANDER Sign and Meaning in Greek and Roman Performance‎

‎Publisher's remainder mark to bottom of textblock (small black dot). Small tear to cloth at base of spine (~1 cm). ; 1.06 x 9.33 x 6.26 Inches; 287 pages; This book provides a detailed analysis of the conventions and techniques of performance characteristic of the Greek theatre of Menander and the subsequent Roman theatre of Plautus and Terence. Drawing on literary and archaeological sources, and on scientific treatises, David Wiles identifies the mask as crucial to the actor's art, and shows how sophisticated the art of the mask-maker became. He also examines the other main elements which the audience learned to decode: costume, voice, movement, etc. In order to identify features that were unique to Hellenistic theatre he contrasts Greek New Comedy with other traditions of masked comedy, and shows how different Roman conventions of performance rest upon different underlying assumptions about religion, marriage and class. David Wiles offers theatre historians and classicists a radical new approach to reading play texts. His book will also be useful to archaeologists seeking to understand what masks mean and how Greek and Roman theatres were used.‎

‎TRAGEDY IN ATHENS Performance Space and Theatrical Meaning‎

‎Former classics scholar's bookplate on ffep (John H. Betts) else Fine. ; 244 pages; David Wiles explores the performance of tragedy as a spatial practice specific to Athenian culture, at once religious and political. After reviewing controversies and archaeological data regarding the fifth-century performance space, Wiles turns to the chorus and shows how dance mapped out the space for the purposes of any given play. He shows how performance as a whole was organized and, through informative diagrams and accessible analyses, brings the theater of Greek tragedy to life.‎

‎THE TWO WORLDS OF THE POET New Perspectives on Vergil‎

‎Very light shelfwear to book else fine. DJ has light edgewear. ; This collection of essays honors Alexander Gordon McKay, one of the most respected names in Vergilian studies. Written by some of the world's leading scholars, the essays offer new perspectives on the larger Vergilian world which Dr. McKay's scholarship has so richly illuminated. The Two Worlds of the Poet focuses primarily on Vergil and Augustan literature and art, with several essays that expand the Vergilian theme and reflect the wide research interests of Professor McKay in such areas of classical studies as literature, art, architecture, painting, and sculpture. Vergil's world presents two faces, each inseparable from the other-the world which formed the poet and the world which the poet himself created—and it is proper that a volume which commemorates a scholar whose own work has elucidated both of these worlds should address itself to each. Several essays examine the poet's modus creandi—his use of the simile; his assimilation of the language and motifs of Roman comic drama; his exploitation of the rich store of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman mythological, legendary, and historical material; and his treatment of a variety of themes which touch upon the very essence of the human condition. Other essays touch upon various aspects of Vergil's material and cultural environment, enabling readers to place his created work in a broader perspective. Contributors offer new perspectives on the post-classical treatment of Vergilian themes, illustrating how the reception of Vergil varied with successive generations. The volume concludes with the reflections of the senior statesman of Vergilian criticism upon the scholar's art and mission. Vergil knew that to understand the present it was essential to break out of the narrow circle of the moment and to reach into the past, thereby affirming our own humanity and our place in the world and finding paths into the future. Vergil and his poetry create evocative connections that cut across time and place and culture, providing a glimpse at the universal human experience. The essays in The Two Worlds of the Poet explore Vergil's own struggle to find his place in the world, chronicle the pathway by which we gain entry into the world of the poet, and examine how the world of the poet has influenced and enriched our world. ; Classical Studies Pedagogy Series; 548 pages‎

‎Historia Apollonii regis Tyri: A Fourteenth-Century Version of a Late Antique Romance. Edited from Vatican City, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, MS Vaticanus latinus 1961‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, xi + 123 pages, Size:140 x 215 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9780888444868.‎

‎Summary With its shipwrecked princes, pirates, and princesses, the Historia Apollonii regis Tyri provided medieval Europe with one of its most popular and influential narratives. The tale incorporates many literary features characteristic of the ancient Hellenistic novel, but differs markedly from its Greek predecessors: its narrative is presented in condensed fashion, its description of characters and events is straightforwardly functional, and the style of its Latin simple. While these features make the Historia Apollonii an oddity among the ancient novels, they contributed to the appeal the story held for later readers and writers in medieval Europe. This edition provides a text of the Latin Historia Apollonii as a reader from the later Middle Ages might have encountered it, from a manuscript written in Italy in the middle of the fourteenth century.‎

‎POPE, HOMER AND MANLINESS Some Aspects of Eighteenth-Century Classical Learning‎

‎240 pages; The conflict between masculine and feminine values in 18th century classical learning is problematic and controversial. In this book, Pope's Homer becomes a richly complex focus for new, gendered explorations into the nature of the masculine "rule". As the subject of this gendered reading, Pope's Homer emerges as the fissured relic of a struggle to preserve masculine dignity from the encroachments of feminine characters and values within the text, and of female readers and critics. This text brings a fresh viewpoint and much detailed research on classical and early modern literature to bear on gender studies' central issues, revealing that "masculinity" must here be seen not as an absolute standard, but as the product of unceasing conflict between competing and unstable models.‎
