Lacey, W. K.
THE FAMILY IN CLASSICAL GREECE
Faint crease to front wrap. Minor shelfwear. ; Aspects of Greek and Roman Life; 342 pages; In this well-researched and coherent introduction to family life in classical Greece, Mr Lacey explains the structure of the family, the social and economic pressures that affected it, and the complicated legal measures that were devised to regulate and protect it. Even though the family has always been a fundamental institution in Greek society, this is the first study in English devoted to it. This book deals in detail with the family in the archaic and classical ages -- the great era of the city-states. It was during this period that a close and complex relationship existed between the family and the city-state. Each city-state was, in fact, the sum total of the households contained in it, and each household resembled a miniature kingdom, with its own gods and lands, and the head of the house exercised almost royal powers over his children. So powerful and close-knit was the family group that it was regarded by politicians and philosophers, including Plato and Aristotle, as damaging to their ideals of personal detachment and public service, and even as a menace to the unity of the state. Mr Lacey supports his views of family life by quoting and discussing relevant writings of the Greek philosophers and by citing contemporary literature, especially the comedies. He analyzes also the valuable evidence supplied by inscriptions, vase paintings, sculpture, terracottas, and coins, many of which are presented in black-and-white photographs. From ancient times until today, the most pervasive force in Greek life has been the family. This study of its influence in classical Greece makes possible a better understanding of greek history, literature, and art.

Lambert, Michael
THE CLASSICS AND SOUTH AFRICAN IDENTITIES
Classical Diaspora; 256 pages; The teaching and research of the Classics in South Africa are deeply rooted in the racial, political and educational inequalities which have characterised the country's turbulent history. Michael Lambert opens three windows on to this history, using the creation of identities as his theoretical lens. The foundation of the Classical Association of South Africa in 1956 and the cultural reinforcement of Afrikaner nationalist identity; the deployment of British colonial identity in public discourses about the role of the Classics in apartheid South Africa at an English speaking university; and the exploration of black African identities in response to the teaching of the Classics at missionary institutions, where vocational training was locked in combat with a classical education, regarded by an educated black elite as the means for upward social mobility in a highly-stratified colonial society.

HOMER'S ANCIENT READERS The Hermeneutics of Greek Epic's Earliest Exegetes
Initials of editors to ffep "RL JJK > REF"-- (ie gift inscription? From editors to R. E. Fantham). Light dust-soiling to top of textblock. Paperclip indent to top of a few pages. Light pencil marginalia to a few pages. Light shelfwear to DJ. ; Although the influence of Homer on Western literature has long commanded critical attention, little has been written on how various generations of readers have found meaning in his texts. These seven essays explore the ways in which the Iliad and the Odyssey have been read from the time of Homer through the Renaissance. By asking what questions early readers expected the texts to answer and looking at how these expectations changed over time, the authors clarify the position of the Iliad and the Odyssey in the intellectual world of antiquity while offering historical insight into the nature of reading. This collection surveys the entire field of preserved ancient interpretations of Homer, beginning with the fictional audiences portrayed within the poems themselves, proceeding to readings by Aristotle, the Stoics, and Aristarchus and Crates, and culminating in the spiritualized allegorical reading current among Platonists of the fifth and sixth centuries C. E. The influence of these ancient interpretations is then examined in Byzantium and in the Latin West during the Renaissance. Contributors to this volume are Robert Browning, Anthony Grafton, Robert Lamberton, A. A. Long, James Porter, Nicholas Richardson, and Charles Segal. ; Magie Classical Publications; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages
