Love Poems from the Greek Anthology
"The Greek Anthology consists of over four thousand brief epigrams written from before the Persian Wars down to the end of the Middle Ages; in other words from the Homeric to the close of the Byzantine age. These poems thus voice the thoughts and sentiments of four distinct and vastly different civilizations; Greece in the golden age of its classicism; Greece in its Alexandrian age; Greece transplanted to Rome, pagan, or Christian; and finally Greece persisting through the dark ages to the dawn of the Renaissance" Nice copy in large type of examples of Greek Lyric poetry.115p. list of sources. Some damage to spine, but contents fine, in original slipcase. A Season of Opera: From Orpheus to Ariadne
Father Owen Lee is internationally known for his intermission commentaries featured during the Saturday afternoon broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. A Season of Opera: gathers together for the first time Father Lee's best broadcast and cassette commentaries, public lectures, and articles on twenty-three works for the musical stage. The essays range from the pioneering Orpheus of Monteverdi to the forward-looking Ariadne of Richard Strauss. Included are Father Lee's famous discussions of Mozart's Magic Flute and Beethoven's Fidelio, Verdi's La Traviata and Falstaff, Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, and Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites. The concluding chapter, originally published as the lead article in The Opera Quarterly's special issue on the end of the twentieth century, is a thought-provoking forecast of opera's future. Recommendations for further reading, CD recordings, and videos are also included. 241p. index Book

Greek Gods, Human Lives : What We Can Learn from Myths

FIRST-PERSON FICTIONS Pindar's Poetic 'I'
DJ has very minor shelfwear else Fine. ; 240 pages; This collection of essays, written over a period of almost thirty years, deals with one problem: who is the 'I' in the odes of the most celebrated ancient Greek poet, Pindar? Since antiquity, the complex and allusive language of the first-person statements has provoked many different answers. Professor Lefkowitz describes the function and nature of Pindar's 'I'-statements and proposes a controversial solution that would cause some histories of Greek literature to be rewritten. Rather than accept the view that the identity of the speaker could be subject to instant and unannounced change, she proposes that the voice of the victory odes is the poet himself, in his most professional persona. Professor Lefkowitz also refutes the traditional belief that the odes were sung by a chorus. She shows that in most, if not all cases, they were sung as solos and that Pindar was continuing the tradition established by the Homeric bards.
