‎TIBERIUS THE POLITICIAN‎

‎Light edgewear to corners of wraps. Creasing to spine. Light pencil marginalia to a few pages. ; Classical Lives; 328 pages; Tiberius has always been one of the most enigmatic of the Roman emperors. At the same time, his career is uniquely important for the understanding of the Empire's development on the foundations laid by Augustus. Barbara Levick offers a comprehensive and engaging portrait of the life and times of Tiberius, including an exploration of his ancestry and his education, an analysis of his provincial and foreign policy and an examination of his debauched final years and his posthumous reputation.‎

‎Byzantine Butterflies :The Folk Paintings Of Peter And Helen Contis‎

‎In 1910, Peter Contis had arrived in Pittsburgh as a penniless Greek immigrant. He began as a dishwasher, but within a year had opened his first restaurant. He put down roots in the new culture yet still preserved vitally important elements of the old. In this way, when eventually he retired and took up brushes, he was able to find a fresh vision of his city that drew as much on acute remembrance of his homeland as on familiarity with the urban landscape amid which he had served generations of diners and brought up his family. Soon after his death, Peter's wife Helen came across one of his paintings, unfinished. Spurred on by a granddaughter, Helen picked up brushes and proceeded to paint other pictures too. This remarkable story is eloquently told by an author who was able to visit the villages in the Peloponnese and to discover many of the springs of the artists' imagination. His narrative is accompanied by 40 color plates and 80 black and white illustrations. The paintings of the two artists are exhibited at The Carnegie Museum of Art to coincide with the publication of this book. It includes details of his family and backgound in the Peloponnese and about Greek immigrants in Pittsburgh, with photographs of the places and people.160p. illus. ‎A COMMENTARY ON THE RHESUS ATTRIBUTED TO EURIPIDES‎

‎Rhesus, a tragedy traditionally (but wrongly) attributed to Euripides, has been the object of too little scholarly attention over the last decades. While debate has focused largely on the question of the play's authenticity, consequently overlooking the features of the play itself, this important new commentary explores the essential elements such as language, style, character-portrayal, and metre. The play's stagecraft and plot-construction are scrutinized and shown to be generally idiosyncratic and often defective despite occasional flashes of genius in the handling of dramatic time and theatrical space. Through the detailed introduction, translation, and commentary, Liapis shows that Rhesus is largely derivative, as it contains a significant amount of textual material taken from other classical tragedies and genres. The conclusion is that the contested author's familiarity with fifth-century drama bespeaks a professional actor, probably one specializing in re-performances of classical repertoire. Such evidence suggests that Rhesus can therefore be considered as not only a surviving fourth-century tragedy, but also one conceived for performance outside of Athens. ; 364 pages‎

‎Erste Ausgabe. Zweisprachige Ausgabe in Altgriechisch und Latein. Graesse IV, 195. Brunet III, 1050. Schröder VIII, 148, 46. Ledeboer 176. A Classical Dictionary of Greek and Roman, Seite 487). Vellum binding of the times with 7 raised bands, gold-stamped Amsterdam coats of arms and roll stamp on spine and cover. First edition. Bilingual edition in ancient Greek and Latin. Graesse IV, 195. Brunet III, 1050. Schröder VIII, 148, 46. Ledeboer 176. With title page printed in red and black, engraved title vignette and several woodcut vignettes. Imprinted annotations at the foot of each page. Smith describes it as the best edition and emphasises the letters as extremely interesting, as they are addressed to men such as Emperor Julian, Athanasius, Basil, Gregory of Nyssa and Chrysostom (A Classical Dictionary of Greek and Roman, page 487). The collection also includes the forgeries of the Venetian Francesco Zambeccari. Ancient Greek text and Latin translation set as a parallel text in two columns. Binding rubbed, slightly bumped and with a few small losses to the vellum cover, front joint torn (approx. 12 cm, but binding tight), pages slightly darkened, light foxing in places and very occasionally slightly dust-soiled, blank page removed before the half-title, otherwise a good to very good copy.‎
