Lucretius; E. J. Kenney (Ed. )
LUCRETIUS: DE RERUM NATURA Book III
Very light to book else fine. DJ has minor shelfwear with 1 small tear and light edgewear. DJ is price-clipped. ; Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics; 272 pages; The De Rerum Natura of Lucretius is a sustained and impassioned protest against religious superstition and irrationality. The poem takes the form of a detailed exposition of Epicurean physical theory - an extreme materialism designed to remove and discredit popular fears of the gods, death and an afterlife. Book III is generally accepted to be the finest in the whole poem; Lucretius argues there that the soul is as mortal as the body and shows that human response to the fact of mortality and death can be at once rational, dignified and liberating. Professor Kenney's commentary is the first to give proper critical emphasis to the techniques and intentions of Lucretius' poetry; it can be read with profit by all students of Latin from senior school level upwards.

Lund, Dr Helen S
LYSIMACHUS A Study in Early Hellenistic Kingship
Very light bumping to corners of book. Else fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; 0.94 x 8.66 x 5.59 Inches; 304 pages; Among Alexander's successors, Lysimachus is the forgotten man; when he is recalled it is usually as brutal oppressor of the Greeks, or conversely, as a mediocre little man spurred into action only late in life by a domineering woman. As the first full-length study of Lysimachus in the English language, this book aims to reassess Lysimachus' achievements, which although ephemeral, foreshadowed the growth of the Pergamene and Byzantine empires. Helen Lund sets Lysimachus' actions against the background of the early Hellenistic world, marked by extreme political instability and constant warfare, but also by great developments in city building, portraiture and numismatics. Lysimachus' practice in warfare, kingship, and government is compared and contrasted with that of his contemporaries, his predecessors, and his successors in order to set his achievements in the context of a continuum of imperial rule in Asia Minor. The evidence for Lysimachus's rule is set in its literary, political and social context. Covering Lysimachus's rise from governor of the obscure satrapy of Thrace to ruler of a vast Hellespont-centered kingdom, this book analyzes his skills as warrior and diplomat, and examines the factors which motivated him at each stage of his career. Helen Lund discusses images of Lysimachus in literature, his contribution to early Hellenistic kingship ritual and royal propaganda, offering a completely fresh approach to the dynastic struggle which ended his career.

Luschey, Heinz
RECHTS UND LINKS Untersuchungen Über Bewegungsrichtung, Seitenordnung Und Höhenordnung Als Elemente Der Antiken Bildsprache
Minor creasing along top of DJ. Minor rubbing to DJ. "

THE GORGON'S SEVERED HEAD Studies of Alcestis, Electra, and Phoenissae
Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; Mnemosyne, Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 255 pages; The Gorgon's Severed Head looks at three plays of Euripides, one early, one middle and one late in his career. Innovations in genre, in the use of the traditional stories, in the representation of women and of gender issues are present at every period. In all three plays characters are depicted creating themselves and each other. Chapter One on Alcestis looks at the artistry of the two main characters and is especially concerned with finding a role for Admetus, the play's most serious problem. The second chapter treats the physical displacement of the myth in Euripides' version of the Electra-Orestes story. A last section approaches the layers of time and space in Phoenissae.

FURTHER VOICES IN VERGIL'S AENEID
Paperback has been rebound in hardcover preserving original wraps. Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.61 x 8.46 x 5.5 Inches; 264 pages; The Aeneid can strike one as a relatively conventional epic, an objective heroic tale of Rome's beginnings. Vergil designed it so that it might read in this way. This is one, epic `voice' that he wished us to hear. But there are `further voices', and these may be disturbing, even shocking, as they add to, comment upon, question and occasionally subvert the implications of the epic voice. This is a detailed examination of Vergil's method of intruding such further voices.

Lyons, Deborah J.
GENDER AND IMMORTALITY Heroines in Ancient Greek Myth and Cult
1.25 x 10 x 6.75 Inches; 288 pages; In recent years, the topic of ancient Greek hero cult has been the focus of considerable discussion among classicists. Little attention, however, has been paid to female heroized figures. Here Deborah Lyons argues for the heroine as a distinct category in ancient Greek religious ideology and daily practice. The heroine, she believes, must be located within a network of relations between male and female, mortal and immortal. Using evidence ranging from Homeric epic to Attic vase painting to ancient travel writing, she attempts to re-integrate the feminine into our picture of Greek notions of the hero. According to Lyons, heroines differ from male heroes in several crucial ways, among which is the ability to cross the boundaries between mortal and immortal. She further shows that attention to heroines clarifies fundamental Greek ideas of mortal/immortal relationships. The book first discusses heroines both in relation to heroes and as a separate religious and mythic phenomenon. It examines the cultural meanings of heroines in ritual and representation, their use as examples for mortals, and their typical "biographies." The model of "ritual antagonism," in which two mythic figures represented as hostile share a cult, is ultimately modified through an exploration of the mythic correspondences between the god Dionysos and the heroines surrounding him, and through a rethinking of the relationship between Iphigeneia and Artemis. An appendix, which identifies more than five hundred heroines, rounds out this lively work.
