Plutarch of Chaeronea; Translated from Greek to French By James Amyot; Translated from French to English By Thomas North
The Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romanes Plutarch's Lives: Complete Set Vols. I-XIII
Stratford-Upon-Avon and Boston: Shakespeare Head Press / Houghton Mifflin Company. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1928. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Eight-volume Set; A very nice complete eight-volume set of this well-regarded translation or rather duo of translations since the translator into English worked from a prior translation into French. This is number 238 of a limited edition of 500 copies. I assume that 500 were published for the Shakespeare Head Press by Basil Blackwell for the British market and an additional 500 by Houghton Mifflin for the American market but as the edition statement reads "Five hundred copies of this edition have been printed in Great Britain for sale in the United States of America" I am guessing that this set is identical to the Basil Blackwell set and that although Houghton Mifflin is the publisher of record the same press actually produced both printings. The books are printed on a wonderful thick paper which has aged beautifully with no foxing or tanning. The edges are deckled and the pages are uncut at the tops. The boards are covered with light blue-gray paper with dark blue buckram spines on which is prin . Shakespeare Head Press / Houghton Mifflin Company hardcover

Plutarch.
PLUTARCH'S LIVES. Translated From the Original Greek with Notes. by John & William Langhornes.
Tall 8vo. 748p. Double columns. Foxed. Original decorated cloth binding. Bold comments and underlining by a modern reader. This Baltimore version is not recorded in AI, though see: AI 39645-6. Plutarc h was the greatest ancient biographer. His great work is The Parallel Lives comprising 46 surviving biographies arranged in pairs (one Greek life with one comparable Roman) and four single biographies . Plutarch displays evident pride in the culture and greatness of the men of Greece, he is nevertheless fair and honest in his treatment of the Romans. As a biographer Plutarch is almost peerless, alt hough his facts are not always accurate. Since his purpose was to portray character and reveal its moral implications, his technique included the use of much anecdotal material. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W121
