Price, Simon
RELIGIONS OF THE ANCIENT GREEKS
Minor creasing to front wrap. A few pages have pencil underlining. ; This is a book about the religious life of the Greeks from archaic times to the fifth century AD, looked at in the context of a variety of different cities and periods. Simon Price examines local practices and concepts in the light of general Greek ideas, relating them to such issues as gender roles, political life, and the trial of Socrates. He lays emphasis on the reactions to Greek religions of ancient thinkers--Greek, Roman and Christian. The evidence drawn on is of all kinds: literary, inscriptional and archaeological. ; Key Themes in Ancient History; 230 pages

Prins, Yopie
Victorian Sappho
"What is Sappho, except a name? Although the Greek archaic lyrics attributed to Sappho of Lesbos survive only in fragments, she has been invoked for many centuries as the original woman poet, singing at the origins of a Western lyric tradition. Victorian Sappho traces the emergence of this idealized feminine figure through reconstructions of the Sapphic fragments in late-nineteenth-century England. Yopie Prins argues that the Victorian period is a critical turning point in the history of Sappho's reception; what we now call "Sappho" is in many ways an artifact of Victorian poetics. Prins reads the Sapphic fragments in Greek alongside various English translations and imitations, considering a wide range of Victorian poets--male and female, famous and forgotten--who signed their poetry in the name of Sappho. By "declining" the name in each chapter, the book presents a theoretical argument about the Sapphic signature, as well as a historical account of its implications in Victorian England." xiii, 279p.illus. bibliography, index. Prior, William J.
VIRTUE AND KNOWLEDGE An Introduction to Ancient Greek Ethics
Bump near top of spine with small crease. ; This book focuses on the concept of virtue, and in particular on the virtue of wisdom or knowledge, as it is found in the epic poems of Homer, some tragedies of Sophocles, selected writings of Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers. The key questions discussed are the nature of the virtues, their relation to each other, and the relation between the virtues and happiness or well-being. There has been renewed interest recently in the concept of virtue. The value of William Prior's book is that it provides the background and interpretive framework to make classical works on ethics, such as Plato's "Republic" and Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics", accessible to readers with no training in the classics. ; 240 pages

ESSAYS IN GREEK HISTORY
Unwrapped in Plastic. ; 10 x 1 x 6.75 Inches; 340 pages; The Professor Emeritus of Greek at Berkeley offers six original papers, the titles of which are indicative of the contents: - The Alleged Battle of Oinoa. - The General's Exhortations in Greek Warfare. - The General on the Battlefield. - Thucydides and Pylos. - The Roads of Akarnania. - Circumventions of the Thermopylai Pass. These studies are a by-product of Pritchett's studies on Greek military practices and Greek topography, and will be of interest to students of Greek historiography, since all involve problems of text and the veracity of the historians. The three topographical chapters, which are based on extensive autopsy and include some new discoveries, are accompanied with photographs and sketchmaps.

Small corrections done in pen on a couple of pages. Light wear to wraps with small chip to upper edge. ; The author's second volume on Pausanias focuses on a collection of over fifty examples where Pausanias is alleged by modern scholars to have made errors in his topographical descriptions of sites and monuments, debating the pros and cons. Probert, Philomen
A New Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek
The original aim of this book was to provide an updated reprint of J.P. Postgate's "Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek" (1924). It has developed considerably during the preparation, still including what was most useful in Postgate but now incorporating much additional material and information based on the latest scholarship. It is intended for those who have already learned some Greek but who wish to acquaint themselves with the workings of the accent system, either for the first time or by way of revision. An introductory part outlines clearly the evidence for our knowledge of Greek accentuation and quotes some of our ancient sources for the sound of the accent. The remainder of the book is designed to facilitate the learning of the accents themselves. Exercises are included throughout. 215p. index Book
