‎EROS IN MOURNING From Homer to Lacan‎

‎Dustjacket has light rubbing. Light shelfwear. ; Eros in Mourning begins with a reading of the Iliad that shows how Homer, not yet influenced by the ideology of transcendence, analyzes the structure of unassuageable mourning in a way that is as up-to-date as the latest poststructuralism. Then, in readings of Dante, Hamlet, La Princess de Clèves, Heart of Darkness, and Lacan, Staten depicts the "thanato-erotic" hysteria that is set off by the specter of the dead and decomposing body that is also the body of sexual love and which, in the "transcendentalizing" tradition, is more female than male. Yet, St. John, certain troubadours, and Milton offer glimpses of a more affirmative relation to "eros in mourning. " ; 9.5 x 1 x 6.5 Inches; 248 pages‎

‎STATIUS: THEBAID‎

‎Very light shelfwear to book. DJ has some creasing to front panel and sticker residue to rear panel. ; 1.18 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 428 pages; This is a new translation of the Thebaid of Publius Papinius Statius, an epic poem in twelve books, completed in about AD 90. The Thebaid has been thought by many to stand second only to Virgil among Latin narrative poems. Its theme is the war between Eteocles and Polynices, sons of Oedipus, for the throne of Thebes. Rich in incident and always dramatic in tone, it unfolds a panorama of human ambition and violence, triumph and catastrophe. Though remaining within the Homeric and Virgilian tradition, it achieves its own power and vitality in thought, language, and description. Held in high esteem and widely imitated in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Thebaid of Statius is not only a masterpiece of poetry but a compelling story, at times horrifying, noble, and pathetic, of humankind bound by the power of Fate.‎

‎Statius; Dewar, Michael‎

‎STATIUS: THEBAID IX Edited with an English Translation and Commentary‎

‎DJ has some creasing along top edge. A few pencil notes by R. E. Fantham. Scholar's name to ffep (R. E. Fantham). ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 232 pages; With Latin text and English translation The epic poem the Thebaid was composed by Statius about AD 80 to 92 in twelve books. The subject is the expedition of the Seven against Thebes in support of the attempt by Oedipus' son Polyneices to recover the throne from his brother Eteocles. Book IX is set in the midst of the fighting before the eventual death of the two brothers. In this new edition of Book IX Dr Dewar accompanies the Latin text with apparatus criticus, a translation, and an extensive introduction and commentary. The introduction contains sections on Statius' life and works, a summary of the epic, its themes and characters, and poetry, the textual tradition, and Statius' influence on later European literature. The commentary, the first on the ninth book to be published in Britain this century, is written in the light of recent scholarship. It examines in close detail Statius' style and language, use of models (especially Homer, Hellenistic Greek poetry, Virgil, Lucan, and Seneca) , and literary intentions. It is Dr Dewar's hope that this edition will help to explain the poem's great popularity in the Middle Ages, and even restore something of its lost prestige.‎

‎Cookbook of the Jews of Greece‎

‎Athens: Lycabettus Press 2005 New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece The Cookbook of the Jews of Greece is more than a cookbook for in addition to the 287 recipes some unique and others unusual variations on familiar Persian Arab Turkish and Greek dishes it is lavishly illustrated by the author with over 60 drawings of Jewish life throughout Greece and documented with descriptions of local customs and traditions that were the settings for a rich and varied cuisine. Greek Jewish cooking is the product of Jewish life in four great empires. The Jews have lived in Greece for over 2000 years as one succeeded another: the Alexandrine the Roman the Byzantine and the Ottoman. From each they took something and made it their own. Beginning in the 15th century Jewish exiles from the expulsions of Spain and Portugal and later from the violence of eastern Europe came to Ottoman ruled Greece and created one of the greatest Jewish cities in history. Salonika reigned as "Queen of Israel" for over four hundred years until it fell victim to the Nazi Holocaust. What remains today in Greece are the memories of survivors from the last generation of Salonika's reign and of 2000 years of Greek Jewish life. The recipes for the Cookbook of the Jews of Greece were painstakingly gathered from these survivors in retirement homes and family homes throughout Greece by Nicholas Stavroulakis formerly director of the Jewish Museum of Greece. He has brought his own varied background to bear on the cookbook's creation. His family is of mixed Cretan Jewish and Turkish origins. He is an artist and a cook. He has exhibited widely in Europe and the United States and has illustrated numerous books. After being educated in Great Britain and the United States he taught at Tel Aviv University before returning to Greece to become the director of the Jewish museum in Athens. 267 pages illustrated with bibliography and index hardback. Reissue. Hard Cover. New Book from Greece/New. Lycabettus Press hardcover‎

‎HOMER & THE ILIAD An Essay to Determine the Scope and Character of the Original Poem‎

‎Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Pages tanned. Light shelfwear to boards. ; The purpose of this study is to provide a description of the Greek particle per as it occurs in the text of Homer. As such it is a contribution to the study of Ancient Greek in general and of the Greek' particles in particular. But the work transgresses the boundaries of Greek linguistics' proper. First, the discussion of per as a scalar article contributes to the discussion of scalar phenomena in general. Second, as a description of a linguistic feature in the Iliad and Odyssey, metrical texts of oral-formulaic origin, this study is also an essay in the relation between linguistics on the one hand and formulas and metre on the other. ; 331 pages‎

‎Very faint crease through upper corner. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.' ‎THE TYRANT'S WRIT Myths and Images of Writing in Ancient Greece‎

‎Light shelfwear to book and DJ. ; 280 pages; Covering material as diverse as curse tablets, coins, tattoos, and legal decrees, Deborah Steiner explores the reception of writing in archaic and classical Greece. She moves beyond questions concerning ancient literacy and the origins of the Greek alphabet to examine representations of writing in the myths and imaginative literature of the period. Maintaining that the Greek alphabet was not seen purely as a means of transcribing and preserving the spoken word, the author investigates parallels between writing and other signifiers, such as omens, tokens, and talismans; the role of inscription in religious rites, including cursing, oath-taking, and dedication; and perceptions of how writing functioned both in autocracies and democracies. Particularly innovative is the suggestion that fifth-century Greek historians and dramatists portrayed writing as an essential tool of tyrants, who not only issue written decrees but also "inscribe" human bodies with brands and cut up land with compasses and rules. The despotic overtones associated with writing inform discussion of its function in democracies. Although writing could promote equal justice, ancient sources also linked this activity with historical and mythical figures who opposed the populist regime. By examining this highly nuanced portrayal of writing, Steiner offers a new perspective on ancient views of written law and its role in 5th-century Athenian democracy.‎
