DAS VORBILD DER VERGANGENHEIT Geschichtsbild und Reformvorschlage bei Cicero und Sallust (Historia - Einzelschriften) (German Edition)
506 pages; The imaginary subjects of the Roman writers Cicero and Sallust demonstrate how strongly the political culture of Rome was influenced by historical perception. Both authors derived the impulse for their political actions from the place within historical continuity at which they located themselves. Additionally, the impressive self-confidence with which they predicted the future success of the radical changes they proposed constitutes a clear indication of the unbroken capacity for learning and regeneration of the republican institutional system. Stable Isotopic Analysis of the Mollusk Shells (Ioannis Liritzis, Androniki Drivaliari and Adamantios Sampson). ; Prehistory Monographs 31; Vol. 2; 395 pages; This book completes the two-part series that serves as the final report for the excavation of the Cave of the Cyclops on the island of Youra in the Northern Sporades of Greece, a site that was occasionally occupied from the Mesolithic through Roman period. The second volume contains the results of detailed studies on the archaeological material, organic remains, and archeometric analyses that complete the image of this significant archaeological site. These studies help to further distinguish the main characteristics of the Mesolithic culture in the Aegean basin, including: the intense exploitation of sea resources, limited hunting activities, the collection of native fruits and land snails to supplement the diet, and attempts at domestication by isolated island communities.

ENVY AND JEALOUSY IN CLASSICAL ATHENS A Socio-Psychological Approach
Emotions vary extensively between cultures, especially in their eliciting conditions, social acceptability, forms of expression, and co-extent of terminology. Envy and Jealousy in Classical Athens examines the sensation, expression, and literary representation of these major emotions in Athens. Previous scholarship has primarily taken a lexical approach, focusing on usage of the Greek words phthonos and zêlos. This has value, but also limitations, for two reasons: the discreditable nature of phthonos renders its ascription or disclamation suspect, and there is no Classical Greek label for sexual jealousy. A complementary approach is therefore required, one which reads the expressed values and actions of entire situations. Building on recent developments in reading emotion "scripts" in classical texts, this book applies to Athenian culture and literature insights on the contexts, conscious and subconscious motivations, subjective manifestations, and indicative behaviors of envy, jealousy, and related emotions. These critical insights are derived from modern philosophical, psychological, psychoanalytical, sociological, and anthropological scholarship, thus enabling an exploration of both the explicit theorization and evaluation of envy and jealousy, and also the more oblique ways in which they find expression across different genres-in particular philosophy, oratory, comedy, and tragedy. By employing this new methodology, Ed Sanders illuminates a significant and underexplored aspect of Classical Athenian culture and literature. ; Emotions of the Past; 224 pages

Gift inscription to ffep from author to Bryan [Reardon]: "to Bryan with warmest regards, Gerry". Very light bumping to bottom corners of book and top of spine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 276 pages; The first three chapters of this book elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage in these chapters with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by the major Latin writer of the second half of the second century. ; Signed by Author

Sappho & Carson, Anne (translator)
If Not, Winter : Fragments of Sappho
Parallel texts in Greek & English "A bilingual edition of the work of the Greek poet Sappho, in a new translation by Anne Carson. Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos from about 630 B.C. She was a musical genius who devoted her life to composing and performing songs. Of the nine books of lyrics Sappho is said to have composed, none of the music is extant and only one poem has survived complete. All the rest are fragments. In this book, Carson presents all of Sappho"s fragments in Greek and in English. Brackets and spaces give the reader a sense of what is absent as well as what is present on the papyrus. Carson"s translation illuminates Sappho"s reflections on love, desire, marriage, exile, bees, old age, shame, time, and many other aspects of the human situation" Book
