PROCOPIUS AND THE SIXTH CENTURY
Bumping to lower corners. Else minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; A magisterial assessment of the major historian of early Byzantium, by one of today's leading historians of late antiquity. Most of our understanding of the age of Justinian is based on the works of Procopius of Caesarea, the most important Greek historian of late antiquity. Many modern histories of the period virtually paraphrase his major work, the Wars. Today, questions of how we are to reconcile the Wars with Procopius' two minor works-the panegyrical Building and the sensational Secret History, still dominates current scholarship. ; The Transformation of the Classical Heritage, Vol X; 310 pages

THE LATER ROMAN EMPIRE AD 284-430
Very minor edgewear to wraps. ; 238 pages; Marked by the shift of power from Rome to Constantinople and the Christianization of the Empire, this pivotal era requires a narrative and interpretative history of its own. Averil Cameron, an authority on later Roman and early Byzantine history and culture, captures the vigor and variety of the fourth century. After a hundred years of political turmoil, civil war, and invasion, the Roman Empire that Diocletian inherited in AD 284 desperately needed the radical restructuring he gave its government and defenses. His successor, Constantine, continued the revolution by adopting--for himself and the Empire--a vibrant new religion: Christianity. The fourth century is an era of wide cultural diversity, represented by figures as different as Julian the Apostate and St. Augustine. Cameron provides a vivid narrative of its events and explores central questions about the economy, social structure, urban life, and cultural multiplicity of the extended empire. Examining the transformation of the Roman world into a Christian culture, she takes note of the competition between Christianity and Neoplatonism. And she paints a lively picture of the new imperial city of Constantinople.

THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD IN LATE ANTIQUITY AD 395-600
Minor bump to top corner. Dustjacket has minor rubbing. ; "The Mediterranean World in Late Antiquity: AD 395-600" deals with the period commonly known as "late antiquity" - the fifth and sixth centuries. The Roman Empire in the west was splitting into separate Germanic kingdoms, while the Near East, still under Roman or Byzantine rule from Constantinople, maintained a dense population and flourishing urban culture until the Persian and Arab invasions of the early seventh century. The book is intended for teachers and students in both ancient and medieval history. Averil Cameron places her emphasis on the material and literary evidence for cultural change and offers a new and original challenge to traditional assumptions of "decline and fall" and "the end of antiquity". The book draws on the recent spate of scholarship on this period to discuss in detail controversial issues such as the capacity of the late Roman army, the late antique city and the nature of economic exchange and cultural life. With its extensive annotation, it provides a lively, and often critical introduction to earler approaches to the period. Contents: 1. Constantinople and the eastern empire in the fifth century 2. The empire, the barbarians and the late Roman army 3. Church and society 4. Late Roman social structures and the late Roman economy. 5. Justinian and reconquest 6. Culture and mentality 7. Urban change and the end of Antiquity 8. The Eastern Mediterranean-- settlement and change. ; Routledge History of the Ancient World; 1 x 1 x 5.75 Inches; 251 pages

Honour,Family and Patronage : A Study of Institutions and Moral Values in a Greek Mountain Community
"Honour, family, and patronage refer to the fundamental values and institutions of a traditional community of Sarakatsani shephers in the Greek mountains. The community comprises six hundred mutually antagonistic and competing families whose members accept few moral obligations beyond the immediate family and a restricted circle of kin. In this fragmented society, unrelated men view one another with intense distrust. Inevitably, economic and civid cooperation are severly limited. A system of social values based on concepts of honour, strength, and pride guides the Sarakatsani away from apparent anarch in their communal life. Relations between the community and the wider Greek society consequently take specific forms of social and political patronage" Classic scholarly study of the lifestyle & motivations of the transhumant Sarakatsani shepherd community in Greece. LA CIRCULATION DE L'INFORMATION DANS LES ÉTATS ANTIQUES
Corners lightly bumped. A few minor stains to endpapers (toner? ).

Capizzi, Antonio
THE COSMIC REPUBLIC Notes for a Non-Peripatetic History of the Birth of Philosophy in Greece
Dust-soiling to top of textblock. Some foxing to endpapers and DJ. Small closed tear (1cm) to upper corner of DJ. ; Philosophica, Vol. 3; 521 pages; According to Aristotle, philosophy had come into being in the VIth century with Thales, just as a mere, disinterested pursuit of truth, a curiosity for great problems (those eventually called "metaphysical" ones) which were substantially identical with those which Aristotle himself and his school were now raising. This abstract reading is very similar to that which views Greek poets as inspired by "eternal beauty" or by "art's for art sake" and which is nowadays completely discredited and given up by scholars of the history of literature. Against this view the present text proposes a new reading of the "archaic" presocratic scientists: in fact, it is about those "sages" who lived on the boundaries of the Greek-speaking world before the concentration of such people in Periclean Athens. They were closely linked to their native towns (Miletus, Ephesus, Croto, Vele, Acragas) where they held high office; here there oral teaching and the public reading of their texts were followed closely by their fellow citizens. Thus the picture of the "cosmic republic" arises: to the "cosmic monarchy" of Homer and Hesiod (the mythical world with Zeus as the king, gods as the ministers and nature as the subject) a different mythical world succeeds. Here the earth, the sea, the sky, the human body and, generally, the "existing thing," all behave like isonomic ("republican") towns or like the governing body of these towns. Philosophy will arise later, in Athens of the Vth century.
