THE ILIAD AS POLITICS The Performance of Political Thought
Very faint foxing to top of textblock else book is fine. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Wily Odysseus. Bold Achilles. Brave Hektor. Beautiful Helen of Troy. For centuries, people around the world have been fascinated by these figures and their tragic war as recounted in Homer's Iliad, long admired and studied as one of the foremost epic poems of the ancient world. In The Iliad as Politics, Dean Hammer revisits this epic with a new perspective. In this first full-length treatment of the Iliad as a work of political thought, Hammer demonstrates how Homer's epic is also an ancient Greek discussion on political ethics. Hammer redefines political thought as the activity of addressing issues of collective identity and organization. Using this understanding of politics, he discusses how the characters in the Iliad, through their larger-than-life actions and interactions, embody community issues of authority, conflict, judgment, and the interrelationship between personal and collective identity. The characters' many quarrels, laments, reconciliations, and vows of loyalty and friendship all critically model the principles and controversies of underlying Greek political ethics of communal responsibility and relationship. Much of modern Western political thought focuses on classical Greek discussions of political philosophy. Hammer demonstrates that the Iliad constitutes another such ancient Greek political discussion. ; Oklahoma Series In Classical Culture; 8.8 X 5.8 X 1.1 inches; 304 pages

THE MACEDONIAN STATE The Origins, Institutions, and History
Top corner of wrap has slight tear. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.97 x 9.23 x 6.24 Inches; 440 pages; In 338 BC Philip II of Macedon established Macedonian rule over Greece; he was succeeded in 336 by his son Alexander the Great, whose conquests in the twelve years that followed reached as far as the Russian steppes, Afghanistan, and the Punjab, and created the Hellenistic world. The study of Macedonia is now a growing point in ancient history. The first ever history of ancient Macedonia has now been completed in three volumes by N. G. L. Hammond, helped by G. T. Griffith and F. W. Walbank. On the basis of that work Professor Hammond now provides in one volume a history of the Macedonian state and its institutions both in Europe and in the Hellenistic kingdoms in Asia and Egypt, on which much new light has been shed by epigraphic and archaeological discoveries. Those institutions have had a profound influence on subsequent history. Full references are given to the ancient sources of information and to archaeological, numismatic, and epigraphic articles.

Hansen, Mogens Herman; (translated by J. A. Crook)
THE ATHENIAN DEMOCRACY IN THE AGE OF DEMOSTHENES Structure, Principles, and Ideology
Creasing to spine. Light creasing to wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; The Ancient World; 410 pages; When democratic rule was ended by the conquering Macedonians in 322, the Athenians had evolved principles and practice of democratic ideology that became the direct inspiration of those liberal ideas cherished by the Western world in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mogens Hansen examines Athenian democracy both as a political system and as an ideology. In describing the former he distinguished between the three major decision-making organs - the Assembly, the Legislators and the Peoples Courts, and the magistrates who were responsible both for preparing the agenda for the legislature and for carrying its decisions into effect. In discussing Athenian democratic ideology Dr Hansen also makes the important distinction between the ideals held by the democrats themselves and those imputed to them by the critics of democracy, principally (and ironically, given that they would barely have survived under any other system) the philosophers. The Athenians conceived liberty both as the ability to participate in the decision-making process, and as the right to live without oppression from the state or other citizens. Equality was conceived not as an equality of nature, but as an equality of opportunity. "The Athenian Democracy in the Age of Demosthenes" is based on more than 30 years sustained research.
