Fosston Flashbacks - The History of Flosston (Saskatchewan) and District
346 pages. Index. Black and white illustrations throughout. Published on the occasion of Saskatchewan't 75th Anniversary in 1980. "Written in order to inform our present and future generations of the life and achievements of their ancestors who laid the foundations for a rich life in this community." - from Dedication page. "Provides the family histories of the settlers of the Fosston district from the time of 1905 until 1980. The numerous photographs tell their own story depicting types of homes, modes of transportation, farming procedures, sports enjoyed and growth in community life. Since schools were great focal points of interest in the life of the residents we have a selection devoted to the school districts of Fosston Rural, Hopeful, Mallard, Hoosehorn #2, Orpington, Ponass Lake and Fosston Hamlet. The spiritual life of the early setters is very evident as we note the faiths which made it possible to erect the churches of Bethel Lutheran, Bobulynci, Evangelical Free, St. Mary's Roman Catholic, Ukrainian Orthodox, and the St. John's Greek Catholic Church." - from Foreward. Bright gilt lettering and illustration upon front board and spine. Clean and unmarked but for ink stamp and 2"x3" application of liquid paper upon front free endpaper. Binding tight. Quality copy. THE CHREIA AND ANCIENT RHETORIC Commentaries on Aphthonius's Progymnasmata
Very light bump to top of spine else fine. ; This book provides the first translations in English and a preliminary analysis of the commentaries on the chreia chapter in Aphthonius's standard Progymnasmata, a classroom guide on composition. The chreia, or anecdote, was a popular form that preserved the wisdom of philosophers, kings, generals, and sophists. Aphthonius used the chreia to provide instructions on how to construct an argument and to confirm the validity of the chreia by means of an eight-paragraph essay. His treatment of this classroom exercise, however, was so brief that commentators needed to clarify, explain, and supplement what he had written as well as to situate the chreia as preparation for the study of rhetoric the kinds of public speeches and the parts of a speech. By means of these Byzantine commentaries, we can thus see more clearly how this important form and its confirmation were taught in classrooms for over a thousand years. ; Writings from the Greco-Roman World; 345 pages

Hoddinott, R. F.
BULGARIA IN ANTIQUITY An Archaeological Introduction
Dustjacket has minor chipping to heel of spine else NF. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. Very minor shelfwear to book. ; 368 pages; This is the first book in English on the art and archaeology of Antiquity in what is now Bulgaria and the first in any language to treat this period here as an entity. Written sources, inscriptions, and coins have been drawn upon to place the main archaeological sites and monuments within their social and historical setting. Beginning with the Ionian arrival about 600 BC, Hoddinott deals first with the Black Sea colonies and the effect of Greek and other civilizations on the native Thracian culture. He then assesses the consequence of absorption into the Roman Empire. Finally he examines the churches and fortifications of the fifth and sixth centuries and the barbarian pressures. Illustrated with 202 plates, 105 figures, and 2 maps.
