‎EDIPO CLASSICO E CONTEMPORANEO‎

‎Book is fine. ; Spudasmata Band 149; 450 pages‎

‎PROLONGEMENTS ET RENOUVELLEMENTS DE LA TRADITION CLASSIQUE En Hommage à Didier Pralon‎

‎Top corners and a few pages are bumped.

‎THE CHREIA AND ANCIENT RHETORIC Commentaries on Aphthonius's Progymnasmata‎

‎Very light bump to top of spine else fine. ; This book provides the first translations in English and a preliminary analysis of the commentaries on the chreia chapter in Aphthonius's standard Progymnasmata, a classroom guide on composition. The chreia, or anecdote, was a popular form that preserved the wisdom of philosophers, kings, generals, and sophists. Aphthonius used the chreia to provide instructions on how to construct an argument and to confirm the validity of the chreia by means of an eight-paragraph essay. His treatment of this classroom exercise, however, was so brief that commentators needed to clarify, explain, and supplement what he had written as well as to situate the chreia as preparation for the study of rhetoric the kinds of public speeches and the parts of a speech. By means of these Byzantine commentaries, we can thus see more clearly how this important form and its confirmation were taught in classrooms for over a thousand years. ; Writings from the Greco-Roman World; 345 pages‎

‎THE FIRST WESTERN GREEKS‎

‎Light bumping to lower corners of book. Some minor rubbing to DJ. Small sticker stain to front panel of DJ. ; The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation, from 1952 onwards, of the first Greek establishment in the West, Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early, and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore, the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there, which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery, the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity. ; 0.63 x 8.82 x 5.67 Inches; 200 pages‎

‎Slatkin, Laura M.‎

‎THE POWER OF THETIS And Selected Essays‎

‎Laura Slatkin's influential and widely admired book, here published in a second edition together with six additional essays, explores the superficially minor role of Thetis in the Iliad. Highly charged allusions reverberate through the narrative and establish a constellation of themes that link the poem to other traditions. Slatkin uncovers alternative traditions about the power of Thetis and shows how an awareness of those myths brings a far greater understanding of Thetis's place in the thematic structure of the Iliad. The six additional essays included in this volume--some of them classics, some never before published--cover a broad range of topics in the study of the Greek Epic: the workings of genre in Hesiod and Homer; the poetics of exchange; and the nature of enmity and friendship. The volume also includes a study of the Hesiodic Catalog of Women and reflections on particular heroes, such as Diomedes and Odysseus. ; Hellenic Studies 16; 238 pages‎
