‎COURTESANS AND FISHCAKES The Consuming Passions of Classical Athens‎

‎Minor shelfwear to book and DJ. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; 1.25 x 10 x 6.75 Inches; 371 pages; British historian Davidson takes us inside classical Greece's brothels, bedrooms, drinking parties and banquets in this rarefied scholarly inquiry. His aim is not merely to depict Athenians as pleasure seekers but to overturn the current notion, purveyed by Michel Foucault and others, that Athens was a "phallocratic" society permeated with an ethos of penetration and domination, a homosexual-leaning culture polarized between adult male citizens and all others: Slaves, women, boys, foreigners. He largely succeeds on all counts, bringing to convivial life a predominantly heterosexual society where classes mingled easily; cultured courtesans bedded leading figures like Pericles and Alcibiades; and wives participated fully in sexual pleasures. Drawing on ancient treatises, pamphlets, comic plays, poems and speeches, Davidson investigates the classical Greeks' indulgences, including their mania for eating fish, A luxury viewed as hedonistic, And their tolerance for booze and sex (though sex addicts were considered to have a lower capacity to resist the natural pleasures). His intriguing study serves up a banquet of arcane lore.‎

‎AUGUSTUS CAESAR‎

‎Light shelfwear. Tiny corner creased to a couple of pages. Small chip to rear wrap with laminate lifting from corner. ; Lancaster Pamphlets; 128 pages; This pamphlet places Augustus Caesar firmly in the context of his own times. It explores the background to his spectacular rise to power, his political and imperial reforms, the creation of the Respublica of Augustus, and the legacy he left to his successors. By examining the hopes and expectations of Augustus' contemporaries and his own personal characteristics of statesmanship and unscrupulous ambition, Shotter reveals that the reasons for Augustus' success lie partly in the complexity of the man himself, and partly in the unique nature of the times in which he lived.‎

‎THE ART OF LOVE Bimillennial Essays on Ovid's Ars Amatoria and Remedia Amoris‎

‎Very light shelfwear to book and DJ. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; The Art of Love celebrates the bi-millennium of Ovid's cycle of sophisticated and subversive didactic poems on love, traditionally assumed to have been brought to completion around AD 2. Ars Amatoria (The Art of Love) and Remedia Amoris (Cures for Love) , which purport to teach young Roman men and women how to be good lovers, were partly responsible for the poet's exile from Rome under the emperor Augustus. None the less they exerted great influence over ancient and later love poetry. This is the first collection in English devoted to the poems, and brings together many of the leading figures in the field of Latin literature and Ovidian studies from the British Isles, Germany, Italy, and the United States. It offers a range of perspectives on the poetics, politics, and erotics of the poems, beginning with a critical survey of recent research, and concluding with papers on the ancient, medieval, and modern reception of the poems. ; 387 pages‎

‎HELLENISTIC HISTORY AND CULTURE‎

‎Light edgewear. Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). ; Hellenistic Culture & Society , No 9; 0.9 x 8.8 x 6 Inches; 293 pages; In a 1988 conference, American and British scholars unexpectedly discovered that their ideas were converging in ways that formed a new picture of the variegated Hellenistic mosaic. That picture emerges in these essays and eloquently displays the breadth of modern interest in the Hellenistic Age. A distrust of all ideologies has altered old views of ancient political structures, and feminism has also changed earlier assessments. The current emphasis on multiculturalism has consciously deemphasized the Western, Greco-Roman tradition, and Nubians, Bactrians, and other subject peoples of the time are receiving attention in their own right, not just as recipients of Greco-Roman culture. History, like Herakleitos' river, never stands still. These essays share a collective sense of discovery and a sparking of new ideas--they are a welcome beginning to the reexploration of a fascinatingly complex age.‎

‎SOURCES FOR ANCIENT HISTORY With Contributions from Emilio Gabba, Fergus Millar, Anthony Snodgrass‎

‎Wraps have yellowing. Minor shelfwear. Scholar's blindstamp to ffep (Robert Brown). ; If a scholar wishes to create a picture of a topical society in all its aspects, there is little of what he needs to know that he cannot know, although there may still be much that he cannot understand. For the history of Greece and Rome, there is a great deal that is simply unknowable. From the end of the archaic age of Greece, there is an unbroken sequence of works by Greek and, later, Roman historians down to the end of antiquity. Their vision and range of interest were often limited and much of what they produced has been lost. Some help may be derived from the documentary material supplied in antiquity, material that was the product of officials organising public activities, or heads of families organising their affairs, or individuals leaving their mark on the world. Beyond this, the evidence of archaeology and numismatics may also be helpful. The four essays in this book set out to characterise the nature of the ancient literary tradition, the inscriptional material, the archaeological and numismatic evidence and to explain how and for what purposes they may be used. Chapters on Literature, Epigraphy, Archaology and Numismatics. ; The Sources of History - Studies in the Uses of Historical Evidence; 252 pages‎

‎SAPPHO'S LYRE Archaic Lyric and Women Poets of Ancient Greece‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Creasing and a bit of chipping to corners of wraps. Minor shelfwear. Some pencil notes to text. ; 234 pages; Sappho sang her poetry to the accompaniment of the lyre on the Greek island of Lesbos over 2500 years ago. Throughout the Greek world, her contemporaries composed lyric poetry full of passion, and in the centuries that followed the golden age of archaic lyric, new forms of poetry emerged. In this unique anthology, today's reader can enjoy the works of seventeen poets, including a selection of archaic lyric and the complete surviving works of the ancient Greek women poets--the latter appearing together in one volume for the first time. Sappho's Lyre is a combination of diligent research and poetic artistry. The translations are based on the most recent discoveries of papyri (including "new" Archilochos and Stesichoros) and the latest editions and scholarship. The introduction and notes provide historical and literary contexts that make this ancient poetry more accessible to modern readers. Although this book is primarily aimed at the reader who does not know Greek, it would be a splendid supplement to a Greek language course. It will also have wide appeal for readers of' ancient literature, women's studies, mythology, and lovers of poetry.‎

‎AUGUSTUS‎

‎Very light bumping to a couple of corners. Scholar's bookplate to ffep (Robert Brown). Dustjacket has minor shelfwear with creasing along upper edge. ; Roman Imperial Biographies; 0.95 x 9.43 x 6.38 Inches; 271 pages; Augustus, the heir to Julius Caesar, was the guiding light in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. In this biography, Pat Southern traces the life and works of the emperor chronologically, presenting idealogy and events as they occurred from Augustus' point of view, including his transition from heir and successor of Julius Caesar to head of the new Principate and his development of the Roman Empire. Augustus did not have a master plan of politics and legislation, but instead, he had to wait and occasionally change course before he settled on a version of government that the Senate and people found acceptable. While there have been many books covering the political, social, and aesthetic culture of the Augustan Age, this is the first book to present the life of Augustus, the man.‎

Did he have an interpretation of his own concerning the overall course of Roman History, and, if so, how did it affect his selection and arrangement of material? ; 322 pages‎

Else VG. ; Oxford Readings Classical Studies; 360 pages; Aristophanes is the only author of Greek Attic comedy whose work survives in any form beyond fragments. His eleven surviving comedies reflect the spirit of Athens in the golden age and its unique freedom of speech. This anthology brings together all the most important contributions to the study of Aristophanes; it addresses a range of subjects from the classic question of Aristophanes' relationship to contemporary politics to more modern issues such as performance context, the interaction between fifth century comedy and tragedy, and gender‎

‎Creasing to spine. Chipping to spine ends. Tear to base of spine cover (3 cm). Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (Robert Brown). Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else VG. ; 280 pages; Professor Dover's book is designed for those who are interested in the history of comedy as an art form but who are not necessarily familiar with the Greek language. The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are treated as representative of a genre. Old Attic Comedy, which was artistically and intellectually homogeneous and gave expression to the spirit of Athenian society in the late fifth and early fourth centuries B. C. Aristophanes is regarded primarily not as a reformer or propagandist but as a dramatist who sought, in competition with his rivals, to win the esteem both of the general public and of the cultivated and critical minority. He succeeded in this effort by making people laugh, and the book pays more attention than has generally been paid to the technical means, whether of language or of situation, on which Aristophanes' humor depends. Particular emphasis is laid on his indifference-positively assisted by the physical limitations of the Greek theatre and the conditions of the Athenian dramatic festivals-to the maintenance of continuous "dramatic illusion" or to the provision of a dramatic event with the antecedents and consequences which might logically be expected. More importance is attached to Aristophanes' adoption of popular attitudes and beliefs, to his creation of uninhibited characters with which the spectators could identify themselves, and to his acceptance of the comic poet's traditional role as a mordant but jocular critic of morals, than to any identifiable and consistent elements in his political standpoint.‎
