‎BARBARIAN ASIA AND THE GREEK EXPERIENCE From the Archaic Period to the Age of Xenophon‎

‎Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. Lower corners a bit bumped. ; Xx, 358pp. In Barbarian Asia and the Greek Experience Pericles Georges explores the ways ancient Greeks viewed and interacted with non-Greeks during the classical period. Through the works of Aeschylus, Herodotus, and Xenophon, Georges examines critical episodes in the formation of Greek ideas and attitudes concerning those foreigners of Asia with whom they came into close historical contact and against whom they defined themselves--especially the "barbarians" of Persia and Lydia. He focuses on the Greeks' intramural debates about their own identity--or identities--as people who shared a common language, religious tradition, and way of life, but who differed over issues of origin, custom, culture, and notions of the barbarian "other." ; 385 pages‎

‎THE LIMITS OF ALTRUISM IN DEMOCRATIC ATHENS‎

‎1 corner lightly bumped else book is fine. DJ has tiny chip near heel of spine. ; Athenians in the classical period (508-322 BC) were drawn to an image of themselves as a compassionate and generous people who rushed to the aid of others in distress, both at home and abroad. What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior? This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support, and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. If the obligation of Athenians to help fellow citizens was fairly tenuous, all the more so was their responsibility to intervene to assist the peoples of other states; a distinct pragmatism prevailed in the city's decisions concerning intervention abroad. ; 215 pages‎

‎GREECE AND THE PERSIANS‎

‎This account traces each stage of the critical struggle between the Persian Empire and the early Greek states, from the first clashes to the miraculous return home of 10,000 Greek mercenaries stranded in the heart of Persia. Carefully examined sources and placing events within their geographical and historical contexts, the author attempts to define cultural and political differences between the two peoples. His balanced, questioning approach places fresh emphasis on the Persian perspective and will provide an accessible and informed introduction to the period. ; Classical World Series; 101 pages‎

‎CLIO AND THE POETS Augustan Poetry and the Traditions of Ancient Historiography‎

‎Lower corners a bit bumped. ; Xv, 396pp. The Augustan age was one in which writers were constantly reworking the Roman past, and which was marked by a profound engagement of poets with the historians and historical techniques which were the main vehicle for the transmission of the image of the past to their day. In this book 17 leading scholars from Europe and America examine the fascinating interaction between such apparently diverse genres: how the Augustan poets drew on - or reacted against - the historians' presentation of the world, and how, conversely, historians picked up and transformed poetic themes for their own ends. With essays on poems from Horace's Odes to Ovid's "Metamorphoses", on authors from Virgil to Valerius Maximus, it forms the most comprehensive examination yet of this central topic of this most central of literary periods. ; 396 pages‎

‎STUDIES IN CLASSICAL HISTORY AND SOCIETY‎

‎Professor Reinhold, a distinguished senior classicist, has produced a fascinating and accessible collection of essays devoted to the study of ancient history. Among the articles included are "The Generation Gap," a major survey exploring myths of the uprising of one generation against another; "Augustus' Conception of Himself," a detailed summary and interpretation of Augustus' life and career; and "The Declaration of War against Cleopatra," an investigation of the charge against Cleopatra that she betrayed her pledge to Rome as a client ruler. Taken together, these essays form a unified and coherent survey of ancient history that will appeal to a broad audience. ; American Philological Association American Classical Studies Series 45; 151 pages‎

‎PLUTARCH‎

‎Some edgewear to wraps with a bit of colour loss. Minor bump to base of spine. ; 183pp. More perhaps than any other single writer, Plutarch has been responsible for transmitting to Europe the central historical and moral traditions of classical antiquity. His books have been a formative influence in western civilisation; they retain a direct appeal to which it is easy to respond. Mestrius Plutarchus (ca. 46- 127) was a Greek historian, biographer, and essayist. Born in the small town of Chaeronea, in the Greek region known as Boeotia, probably during the reign of the Roman Emperor Claudius, Plutarch travelled widely in the Mediterranean world, including twice to Rome. Due to his parents' wealth, after 67, Plutarchus was able to study philosophy, rhetoric, and mathematics at the Academy of Athens. He had a number of influential friends, including Soscius Senecio and Fundanus, both important Senators, to whom some of his later writings were dedicated. He lived most of his life at Chaeronea, and was initiated into the mysteries of the Greek god Apollo. However, his duties as the senior of the two priests of Apollo at the Oracle of Delphi (where he was responsible for interpreting the auguries of the Pythia or priestess/oracle) apparently occupied little of his time - he led an active social and civic life and produced an incredible body of writing, much of which is still extant. ; Classical Life & Letters; 183 pages‎
