Over 40 friends and former doctoral students whose work was supervised by John Boardman during his time as Lincoln Professor of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford University (1978-1994) have contributed essays on topics close to his heart. Now holding academic posts worldwide, they all recall with pleasure the enthusiasm and encouragement of their former teacher. ; 1.65 x 10.57 x 7.73 Inches; 416 pages‎

‎INVENTING ANCIENT CULTURE Historicism, Periodization and the Ancient World‎

‎1 page with corner creasing. Else very minor shelfwear. ; Inventing Ancient Culture is an exciting introduction to new approaches to the classics. There is a tendency for those interested in the broader field of cultural studies to claim that modern perceptions of self, modern affectivities, and modern societal and institutional structures date from the Enlightenment. This volume will vigorously challenge this misperception. Contributors to the volume address issues including the extent of which cultural and social forms change through time, and the extent, or otherwise, of change in cultural systems since antiquity. ; 248 pages‎

‎CLASSICAL GREECE Ancient Histories and Modern Archaeologies‎

‎A bit of hard creasing to wraps. ; New Directions in Archaeology; 258 pages; The archaeology of classical Greece developed in the shadow of Greek historical scholarship. Many modern developments in archaeology have been neglected, and classical archaeology has become something of a backwater. The contributors to this book review the history of the field and aim to demonstrate that modern archaeological approaches can contribute to a richer understanding of Greek society. They insist that this complex, literate and highly unusual society poses important questions for archaeologists of other regions.‎

‎ANCIENT GREECE A Political, Social, and Cultural History‎

‎Underlining in pen to a few pages. Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). 1 corner creased. ; 544 pages; Written by four leading authorities on the classical world, Ancient Greece: A Political, Social, and Cultural History introduces students to the history and civilization of ancient Greece in all its complexity and variety. The most comprehensive and balanced history of ancient Greece that covers the entire period from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic Era, it integrates the most recent research in archaeology, comparative anthropology, and social history with a traditional yet lively narrative of political, military, and diplomatic history. The authors show how the early Greeks borrowed from their neighbors but eventually developed a distinctive culture all their own, one that was marked by astonishing creativity, versatility, and resilience. The book goes on to trace the complex and surprising evolution of Greek civilization to its eventual dissolution as it merged with a variety of other cultures. Using physical evidence from archaeology, the written testimony of literary texts and inscriptions, and anthropological models based on comparative studies, the authors provide an account of the Greek world that is thoughtful and sophisticated yet accessible to students and general readers with little or no knowledge of Greece. Featuring 19 maps, more than 80 photographs, and numerous selections that highlight a variety of primary source material, Ancient Greece is an indispensable text for courses in ancient Greek history.‎

‎CLASSICS A Very Short Introduction‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). ; We are all classicists--we come into touch with the classics on a daily basis: in our culture, politics, medicine, architecture, language, and literature. What are the true roots of these influences, however, and how do our interpretations of these aspects of the classics differ from their original reality? This introduction to the classics begins with a visit to the British Museum to view the frieze which once decorated the Apollo Temple a Bassae. Through these sculptures John Henderson and Mary Beard prompt us to consider the significance of the study of Classics as a means of discovery and enquiry, its value in terms of literature, philosophy, and culture, its source of imagery, and the reasons for the continuation of these images into and beyond the twentieth century. Designed for the general reader and student alike, A Very Short Introduction to Classics challenges readers to adopt a fresh approach to the Classics as a major cultural influence, both in the ancient world and twentieth-century--emphasizing the continuing need to understand and investigate this enduring subject. ; 136 pages‎

‎THE PALACES OF CRETE‎

‎Minor rubbing to wraps with a bit of colour loss. Rear wrap yellowed. Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). ; 388 pages; When it first appeared in 1962, The Palaces of Crete radically modified the conception of the palace of King Minos and of other Minoan palaces, villas, and houses of the late Bronze age. A standard text since its publication, the work has now been significantly revises, especially as regards the Palace at Zakros and the West Annex (unexplored mansion) at Knossos. Thirteen new illustrations have been added. Prefaced with an account of the island's geography, history, and culture in antiquity, the book is not only invaluable for the student but for the tourist looking for a guide to the sites. ---‎

‎VERGINA: THE ROYAL TOMBS‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Inscription in pen to inner cover. Front panel of DJ is torn and has been repaired from behind with cellotape. ; 244 pages; Excerpt from the prologue written by the author MANOLIS ANDRONICOS, "It has been necessary to try to produce a text which will serve the needs of the specialist without ignoring those of the general reader. Such attempts are far from easy in execution and not infrequently succeed only in sacrificing academic integrity without providing adequate information for the non-specialist. It is not for me to say if I have achieved what I set out to do. Nevertheless, in addition to the text, there are the illustrations to the book which I believe contribute to the success of its purpose as I have defined it. A picture is always the best means - after the objects themselves - for every reader, specialist or not, to gain a closer idea of archaeological finds. Once I had decided to write the book I considered it essential not to limit myself to the recent impressive finds from the royal tombs, but to set before the reader a synoptic but solid account of all the archaeological finds in the area. In this way its considerable interest becomes comprehensible - an area which has yielded graves containing hand-made prehistoric pottery and bronze jewellery, a magnificent architectural complex dating to the last years of the fourth century, the theatre of a city, a small temple and a series of monumental Macedonian tombs with unique painted compositions of the classical period, masterpieces of jewellery made by Greek goldsmiths, of miniature sculpture and the most magnificent products of Greek metalworking. The brilliance of the latter sheds new light on the older finds so that these acquire their proper perspective. In addition to all this, the finds from Vergina provide new information about Macedonian Hellenism, our knowledge of which so far is based almost exclusively on literary sources emanating from Athens. It is natural that that city, the only serious political rival to Macedonia, should frequently distort its enemy's true face and denigrate its historical contribution to the development of Hellenism, at least before the meteoric rise of Alexander the Great."‎

‎PHILIP OF MACEDON‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Dustjacket has edgewear with chipping and small tears. ; In autumn 1977 an unplundered royal tomb containing works of art of astounding richness and exquisite craftsmanship was discovered by Professor Manolis Andronicos at Vergina in Macedonia. The excavator's suggestion that the tomb's occupant was probably Philip, son of Amyntas, king of the Macedonians and Captain General of the united Greeks, created an understandable sensation, and aroused world-wide interest in this extraordinary personality: father of Alexander the Great, one of the greatest Macedonian kings, and also one of the most important political figures of antiquity. In response to this interest nine scholars, all eminent specialists in the history of 4th century Greece, describe the tumultuous career of Philip, re-evaluate his personality and re-examine his political achievements in the light of the recent discoveries. The book closes with an account of the excavation of the fabulous treasures of the royal tombs at Vergina by Professor Andronicos. ; 254 pages‎
