PLUTARCH'S LIVES. Translated From the Original Greek with Notes. by John & William Langhornes.
Tall 8vo. 748p. Double columns. Foxed. Original decorated cloth binding. Bold comments and underlining by a modern reader. This Baltimore version is not recorded in AI, though see: AI 39645-6. Plutarc h was the greatest ancient biographer. His great work is The Parallel Lives comprising 46 surviving biographies arranged in pairs (one Greek life with one comparable Roman) and four single biographies . Plutarch displays evident pride in the culture and greatness of the men of Greece, he is nevertheless fair and honest in his treatment of the Romans. As a biographer Plutarch is almost peerless, alt hough his facts are not always accurate. Since his purpose was to portray character and reveal its moral implications, his technique included the use of much anecdotal material. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W121

Aeschines and Demosthenes.
AISXINOU O KTA KTHSIFWNTOS KAI DHMOSQENOYS O PERI STEFANOY LOGOS. [ORATIONS]. Interpretione Latinam P. Foulkes & J. Freind. Editio Secunda.
pp. (14), 182, (18). The very thin paper used to cancel a4 and b4 has deteriorated - completely on a4. Text in Greek with Latin notes. Three engraved portraits have apparently been removed. ** Extensive manuscript translations into English. 8vo. (in 4). [18 5 x 113 mm.] Contemporary full calf binding. Boards tooled in blind with several frames. Cracked at joints. Early ownerships, including: Jacob Nash, Oxford and E.G. Davis, 1847. Dibdin I:487. Aeschine s (Ca. 390?314 B.C.), Athenian orator and polititian, was a great rival of Demosthenes (384??322 B.C.). He rose from humble circumstances and became powerful in politics because of his oratorical gift s. At first he opposed Philip II of Macedon, then later changed sides, arguing that resistance to Macedonian power was useless. Both he and Demosthenes were members of the embassy to Philip in 348 B.C ., and afterward Demosthenes bitterly and baselessly accused Aeschines of accepting Macedonian bribes. He was to have been joined in his action by Timarchus, but Aeschines prevented this by his oratio n Against Timarchus (345 B.C.). Aeschines defended himself well in his oration On the False Legation (342 B.C.)?a title also used by Demosthenes in his accusatory oration. The trouble between the orat ors grew and culminated in a dispute over a gold crown that the orator Ctesiphon proposed should be given Demosthenes in 330 B.C. Aeschines brought suit with Against Ctesiphon. Demosthenes replied wit h his sturdy defense On the Crown. Aeschines lost and was fined, and retired to Asia Minor where, according to Plutarch, he lived as a professional Sophist. This is offered as much for its manuscript interest as for it being an early printing. W120

Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890) was born in Neubukow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (Germany) but was a world-traveler as a treasure hunter and pioneer archaeologist. An advocate of the historical reality of places mentioned in the works of Homer, he became the first important excavator of Troy and of the Mycenaean sites Mycenae and Tiryns. Schliemann brought dedication, enthusiasm, conviction a large fortune, and a great deal of luck to the work. His personal history is quite fascinating. At the Tiryns excavation he worked with Wilhelm Dorpfeld (1853-1940) a German architect, best known for his contributions to classical archaeology, and the wonderful drawings in this volume. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Herodianus; Politan; Zosimus; Estienne.
HERODIAN HISTORIARUM LIBRI VIII.
pp. [viii], 182, [ii], 79, [i]. Woodcut Estienne device on title page. Greek and Latin in parallel columns. Text uniformly foxed. Manuscript description of the acquistion (in 1800) of this copy and other bibliographic points. 4to. 26 cm. 18th century full limp vellum binding. Herodianus, supposed to have been a Syrian Greek, flourished during the third century A.D. In 203 he was in Rome, where he held some minor posts. His great historical work was written in Greek and narrates the events of the fifty-eight years between the death of Marcus Aurelius and the proclamation of Gordianus III. (180-238). The narrative is of special value as supplementing Dion Cassius, whose history ends with Alexander Severus. Chronicling the events of his own times, gifted with ordinary powers of observation, indubitable candour and independence of view his work is of inestimable value. He gives a lively account of many events such as: the death of Commodus; the assassination of Pertinax; how Didius Julianus bought the Roman Empire at auction; etc. Extensive use has been made of Herodianus by later chroniclers, especially the 'Scriptores historiae Au gustae' and John of Antioch. Poliziano did the first translation into Latin (1493) which conferred celebrity status on Herodian for the duration of the Renaissance. This Herodian was described by Dibdin as `an elegant, rare and critical edition', with notes and textual revisions by Henri Estienne. This is the first edition of any part of Zosimus (Editio Princeps), although Estienne only printed the first two books, translated by Leunclavius. The volume was dedicated to Sir Philip Sidney. Estienne (Etienne) (Latinized as Stephanus) was a great family of Parisian and Genevan printers of the 16th and 17th century, distinguished through five generations in scholarship as well as in their craft. Henri Estienne , Jr. (1531?-1598), was the greatest scholar of the family. He inherited his father's (Robert) press on the express condition that it should not be moved from Geneva. He was a well-trained scholar and devoted years to searching for manuscripts. Although humanism was far advanced, he, nevertheless, discovered numerous works of classical authors of which he issued first editions. His editions of Greek and Latin works are remarkable for their accuracy and textual criticism. Renouard 149/7; Schreiber 209; Dibdin II, 15; Adams H388, S1738. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Small Box OST 1

pp. XII-143 + Six plates & various text figures + 10p. Mimeographed Circular letter promoting the book and its project (in 1937) bound in at the front. There are also minor manuscript corrections in the printed QDtext, probably by Flagg. This example was owned by Reinhardt Dempwolf (1861-1945), a prominent German born architect who was very active and influential in York, PA. There is a partially typed letter (1937) to him from the author. There is also an ALS on Harvard stationary to Mr. Dempwolf from J. Burn Helme (a professor and architect prominent at Penn State). The work is scarce. It puts forward a persuasive argument that the proportions seen in the Parthenon were employed throughout the Greek classical world. PHil ARCH1
