Venus : The Lonely Goddess
"A deliciously provocative tale . Venus was a late-comer among the Olympian gods, and her origins were shrouded in mystery. Some said she had risen from the sea, but there was no certainty about it. As the young wife of Vulcan, she came to as human a family of gods as you're likely to meet. Enjoying their transitory godhead, they were little interested in such weighty matters as Progress and Reform, and among then Vulcan was the only one who ever did any work. Venus started out as an exemplary daughter-in-law - ignoring Juno's feline suspicion of her youth and beauty; meeting Jupiter's double entendres with trusting innocence; and inspiring friendship in the roguish heart of Mars. Here are polished wit and a wicked use of humor for ulterior motives - Ambrosia sprinkled with Attic salt" 155p. illus.Coles bookstore stamp on ffep.Dj now in protective seeve/ Book

Kazantzakis,Nikos
Report to Greco (Autobiography)
"It is not a formal autobiography, but rather the summing up,by a great artist,of a lifetimes' ideas, work, experiences and friendships." (Title in Greek : Anaphora Ston Gkreko" ) Introduction by Helen Kazantzakis. "Kazantzakis wrote the words "A Novel" on the title page of «Report to Greco». But in the truest sense it is his own autobiography - a re-creation of his inner life, which, rather than external incident, he felt to be the significant part of his life. It is told in the form of a final communique by a "soldier" who has completed his mission and is about to die - a report to his commander in the struggle to transform flesh into spirit. . "512p. Ikons : A Collection of Stories
"Even after thirty years the Mavromatis family cannot understand their life in Australia. Until Peter Mavromatis's first exhibition as an "ethnic" photographer clarifies everything. In this collection of stories we follow the family fortunes. Old YiaYia had already lived her life in the old country. Christois and Elli wage a private war as confused as the motives which brought them from Cyprus. For Peter, their Austalian born son and proud hope for the future, life is a contest of shallow cultural identities and allegiances. Ikons is a vivid and contentious portrayal of a family united only by society's view of them as outsiders" 198p. Remainder mark, else near fine. Book

Prins, Yopie
Victorian Sappho
"What is Sappho, except a name? Although the Greek archaic lyrics attributed to Sappho of Lesbos survive only in fragments, she has been invoked for many centuries as the original woman poet, singing at the origins of a Western lyric tradition. Victorian Sappho traces the emergence of this idealized feminine figure through reconstructions of the Sapphic fragments in late-nineteenth-century England. Yopie Prins argues that the Victorian period is a critical turning point in the history of Sappho's reception; what we now call "Sappho" is in many ways an artifact of Victorian poetics. Prins reads the Sapphic fragments in Greek alongside various English translations and imitations, considering a wide range of Victorian poets--male and female, famous and forgotten--who signed their poetry in the name of Sappho. By "declining" the name in each chapter, the book presents a theoretical argument about the Sapphic signature, as well as a historical account of its implications in Victorian England." xiii, 279p.illus. bibliography, index. Vardalos, Nia
Instant Mom
"On a rainy morning in early 2003, Nia Vardalos found out that she had been nominated for an Oscar for writing the sceenplay for My Big, Fat Greek Wedding . But her mind was not on champagne and celebratory cheer. Instead, she was alone, en route to a fertility clinic, trying yet again for another chance at motherhood. In her attempts to make a baby, Vardalos tried everything from drinking daily jugs of green-mud-tea to voodoo-doll-like acupuncture, to working with two surrogates. All the while she was trying to advance her film career, writing films while dodging questions from family, friends, and Hollywood reporters who continually asked Where s the baby? She decided to try adoption and discovered Foster Family Agencies, meeting social workers and eventually getting paired up with a three year old girl with blonde streaks in her hair who she knew, instantly, was her daughter. With her signature wit and candor, in Instant Mom Vardalos opens up about what came next - the heartaches and smiles, tears and laughter that all make up what it means to be a parent. Filled with stories about Vardalos life in the Hollywood scene - she counts Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson and Sean Hayes as friends - and her unique take on the tough but often hilarious moments that make up motherhood, Instant Mom is about how stubborn optimism can work in one's favor, and how it was this very optimism that brought Nia to her daughter against all of the odds. Cochrane : Britannia's Last Sea-king
, indexThe controversial Thomas Cochrane, known to many as the "Sea Wolf", is second only to Nelson himself among the heroes and legends of the Royal Navy. Renowned for his daring, skill, and enterprise, Cochrane was much revered by his men and, remarkably enough, later went on to command ships in the navies of Chile, Brazil, Peru, and Greece, providing outstanding leadership in their struggles for freedom. As a Radical Member of Parliament and a staunch supporter of reform in its darkest hour, Cochrane stood on principle rather than on practicality and constantly found himself at the center of political firestorms.383p.+ plates, maps, bibliography, index Book

Woodhouse, C.M.
The Philhellenes
"The efforts of the British philhellenes in the Greek War of Independence have never been forgotten by the Greeks. The British themselves, however, have been slow to honour their fellow-countrymen who fought for the first of the new nation states to achieve independence in the nineteenth century. In this account of the movement at home and in the field, Mr. Woodhouse shows that it did not consist merely of Byron plus an entourage of eccentrics, ruffian, and romantics, though there were plenty of all three. They were part of an international movement of protest in which nationalism, religion, radicalism and commercial greed all played a part, as well as sentiment and pure heroism. This is an attempt to widen the context." 264p. bibliography. index Book

The Pan Principle
"The Pan Principle is the story of a woman's travels in search of a variety of sites sacred to the god Pan in Greece. Pan, half-goat, half-man, is the only god who is said by the ancients to have died. The mystery of his supposed death is discussed as the various shrines and areas connected to him are examined. His earliest territory was the little-visited province of Arcadia. From there his worship and reputation spread with Greek and Roman culture. Pan's appeal has always been an enduring one, both to his worshipers and later writers who have identified him with a variety of figures" 305p. bibliography. index Book
