First and only edition of this exceedingly rare and one of the earliest church regulations of the Greek Orthodox community of Attalia [Antalya]. Attalia was not a large urban center or major trading hub, but neither was the Greek Community marginal, and it was well integrated into the regional economy. It was different from other areas in Asia Minor due to a combination of factors ranging between demography, geography, local Orthodox leadership, and the city's social milieu. In contrast to the West-coast cities and many villages in Asia Minor with Orthodox majorities, Attalia's population was only about one-third Orthodox. The main area of difference in Antalya was the Community leadership, which was key to the maintenance of cordial relationships between Christians and Muslims, and the secular and ecclesiastical elements of Orthodox leadership in Antalya tended to cooperate for collective benefit. Throughout this period, a local elite managed to control education and other Community institutions, perpetuating an identity that was compatible with the local Ottoman context. In this last period, the Greek Community printed several books and tractates including a brief history of Antalya and this "regulation book" in the Meli Printing House, which was the only printing house of the Greek Community in Antalya. Only one institutional copy is located in OCLC 1030075331 (Suna Kiraç Library of the Koç University).

(Jaar: 2011 - Europeana Collections). French edition of Kiepert's huge map of the Imperial Ottoman territories. "Includes list of geographic terms in eastern languages and notes on administrative divisions. Includes notes on materials the cartographer used to put together the map". (See LC copy). Kiepert, (1818-1899), was born in Berlin. He traveled frequently as a youth with his family and documented his travels by drawing. His family was friends with Leopold von Ranke, who inspired Kiepert's creative endeavors. Kiepert was taught by August Meineke in school. Meineke influenced Kiepert's interest in classical antiquity. He attended Humboldt University of Berlin. He studied history, philology, and geography. He published his first geographical work, with Carl Ritter, in 1840, titled Atlas von Hellas und den hellenischen Kolonien. The atlas focused on ancient Greece. In 1848 his Historisch-geographischer Atlas der alten Welt was published. In 1854, his atlas, Atlas antiquus was released. It was translated into five languages. Neuer Handatlas über alle Teile der Erde was first published in 1855. In 1877 his Lehrbuch der alten Geographie was published, and in 1879 Leitfaden der alten Geographie, which was translated into English (A Manual of Ancient Geography, 1881) and into French. In 1894 he created the first part of a larger atlas of the ancient world titled Formae orbis antiqui. He traveled to Asia Minor four times between 1841 and 1848. He created two maps of the region, including Karte des osmanischen Reiches in Asien, in 1844. Kiepert taught geography at the University of Humboldt-Berlin starting in 1854. Among Ioannidis' achievements is the discovery of the MS of the Byzantine Epic of Digenis Akritas, which was published by Sathas and Legrand, and eventually later also by himself. In this study, Heath Lowry takes the reader on a series of fascinating journeys through the former Ottoman territories which today comprise northern Greece. Part travelogue and part history of a once key part of the discovery of destroyed and/or long forgotten Ottomans monuments, in combination with a detailed examination of the current status of those which survive today. Lowry approaches his subject by following the footsteps of the early 20th century British archeologist, F. W. Hasluck, who was the first scholar to examine the manner in which one time pagan sacred spaces in Anatolia and the Balkans had first been subsumed as Christian sites, and then in turn converted into Muslim sacred spaces. The question Lowry sets out to answer is: what happened to the Muslim sacred spaces in northern Greece following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War? His account traces the manner in which a surprisingly large number of such sites were subsequently converted (or reconverted as the case may be) into Christian sacred spaces. Running the gamut from major works of Ottoman architecture, such as the previously unstudied 14th century mosque of Yildirim Bayezid in Drama, to the mosque of the Ottoman 3rd Army Headquarters in Thessaloniki (Selanik), both of which today are Orthodox Churches, he traces the fate of not only mosques, but tombs, and even subjects as varied as tree cults and totem stones. This work, which reflects the author's travels in northern Greece throughout the past five years, is a must-read companion piece to his earlier: The Shaping of the Ottoman Balkans. Together these two works, which Bahçesehir University is proud to have published as parts of its Tenth Anniversary Commemorations, mark a major contribution to our knowledge of both the long neglected Ottoman architectural legacy in Greece and to the subsequent subsumption of many Muslim sacred spaces.

Photograph depicts three Ottoman civilians of Rhodes Island in their local costumes; one is an outdoor dress of Muslim women living in Rhodes, the second is a standard dress for Muslim men, and the last one is a home dress of Muslim women. Pascal Sébah (1823-1886) was a photographer in Constantinople (now Istanbul) and Cairo, who produced a prolific number of images of Egypt, Turkey, and Greece to serve the tourist trade, and the founder of Sebah & Joaillier Photograph Studio. He established a valuable working relationship with Turkish painter Osman Hamdi Bey, taking photographs as part of the artist's preparation, and in which he experimented with light and shade. In turn, Hamdi Bey selected Sébah to illustrate his text on the popular costumes worn by Turkish and other ethnic groups, entitled Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie en 1873: ouvrage publié sous le patronage de la Commission impériale ottomane pour l'Exposition universelle de Vienne and published in 1873.

The book includes the research deducted by Mr. Alper, who had an important archive about the historical building and site. The first confrontation with the building goes back to 1991. The relationship which Mehmet Alper and his team established and their ongoing commitment of responsibility and interest with the structure they have monitored over the years have continued with certain intervals until the present day. The main objective of this study is to share archives, documents, and information they have compiled over the years with the pertinent parties in order to speed up the conservation process. An attempt to access all types of documents was made while meticulously researching its architectural history, whereas the compiled data was evaluated in the historical process flow. This research was initiated with written/printed / online scanning of local and foreign sources that produced works pertaining to the orphanage. The architect and his team collaborated with many academicians and specialists who had written valuable articles and papers such as Akillas Millas, Berrin Alper, Çelik Gülersoy, Hakki Göktürk, Oguz Ceylan, etc and the General Manager of the Ottoman Public Debt Administration, Edgar Vincent in order to access Ottoman documents and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Ataturk Library to acquire maps and postcards of the Prinkipo Orphanage. Therefore, this research is an important effort to save the Orphanage's cultural heritage and to convey it to the future with the proper work.

First and only edition of this uncommon first-hand account in verse of the Siege of Scutari, also referred to as the Siege of Shkodër (Shkodra), took place from 28 October 1912 to 23 April 1913 when the army of the Kingdom of Montenegro defeated the forces of the Ottoman Empire and invaded Shkodër, written by Mehmed Fahri Pasha, who served in Serbia as the chief physician of Shkodra by participating in the Balkan Wars (1912-1913). On 8 October 1912, Turkish General Hasan Riza Pasha announced that Montenegro had declared war on the Ottoman Empire in order to erase 600 years of oppression by the "Turkish foot", as the enemy claimed, and that its troops were crossing the border between Montenegro and Albania. Two hours after the news, the Montenegrin troops, as expected, approached Scutari. As much as 70% of the Turkish army in the interior of the Balkans was composed of Muslim Albanians conscripted during the freedom struggle from the Ottoman Empire. Özege 12224.

L'edizione originale dell'opera, Kritische Geschichte der neugriechischen und der russischen Kirche, era apparsa a Magonza nel 1840. Lo Schmitt era parroco cattolico a Grosswallstadt. Il traduttore, Aurelio Bianchi-Giovini (Como, 1799-Napoli, 1862), giornalista e patriota, nelle sue opere di storia ecclesiastica manifestò una spiccata tendenza anticlericale e in quest'opera riesumò tendenziosamente gli scritti del Sarpi, caduti in parte in oblio, per servirsene polemicamente contro la Chiesa.
