Le pagine che seguono si interrogano sulle forme di giustificazione e di realizzazione della presenza di questa minoranza in una città portuale di antico regime, nella più ampia cornice dello Stato dei papi. L'arco cronologico di riferimento va dalla metà del Seicento alla prima metà del Settecento. Tuttavia, gli aspetti peculiari dell'organizzazione economica ebraica nella città, laddove pertinente, sono indagati con uno sguardo di più lunga lena, che abbraccia l'età moderna. All'analisi dei rapporti istituzionali e alle forme di collaborazione interna ed esterna al nucleo ebraico viene affiancata la focalizzazione di alcuni casi specifici, di alcune storie individuali o familiari, al fine di comprendere più intimamente la sovrapposizione dei fattori culturali, religiosi e più latamente sociali che sottostavano alle scelte degli uomini e delle donne del passato, anche in campo economico. Lo studio si situa all'interno di un dibattito storiografico molto vivace, quasi febbrile, sul ruolo economico delle minoranze nella formazione dei moderni spazi di mercato. Scala locale di analisi e scala macro sono alternate e intersecate per dare maggiore risalto alle peculiarità prese in considerazione e per contribuire a spiegare il funzionamento articolato delle relazioni economiche fra periferie e centro dei commerci. I circa 700 ebrei italiani che le leggi razziali cacciarono dallo Stato dopo il 1938 erano direttori generali, professori di scuola media, ingegneri e chimici, operai della Zecca, postini e maestre elementari, oltre che, è più noto, professori universitari di fama. «Il registro» ne ricostruisce per la prima volta i nomi, il ruolo professionale e, in diversi casi, i dati biografici. Le fonti sono incontrovertibili: i protocolli e i decreti della Corte dei Conti, che registrarono tutte le decisioni dello Stato italiano al riguardo. Nell'ottantesimo anniversario delle leggi razziste emergono anche le ricadute economiche individuali di quelle espulsioni. In molti casi i perseguitati furono letteralmente ridotti in povertà, ovvero vennero loro corrisposte delle indennità irrisorie, talvolta neppure quelle. Utilizzando lo strumento inedito dei registri dei decreti e incrociandolo con i decreti stessi e con altre fonti, il volume ripercorre capillarmente le procedure che riguardarono ciascun perseguitato. Per la prima volta è possibile capire quale fu all'epoca, a parte la spoliazione dei beni, il generale impoverimento personale degli ebrei italiani dipendenti dallo Stato.
