Così il grande studioso del mito Furio Jesi esordisce in questo suo libro. L'accusa del sangue non è fondata su fatti, è un'invenzione. Per controbatterla occorre smontare la convinzione dell'accusatore, scavando nelle figure immaginarie dell'antisemitismo, sia di quello popolare sia di quello colto. Ovvero è necessario comprendere non solo i miti, ma la macchina mitologica che produce superstizioni, credenze, luoghi comuni. Jesi si addentra nella cultura profonda, nelle ossessioni dell'antisemitismo moderno, individuandone le permanenze antiche. Edition originale très rare de l'ouvrage qui installera définitivement l'autorité de l'auteur en matières d'études orientales. En effet, Sir William Jones fut un éminent orientaliste et linguiste, fondateur de The Asiatic Society, une des premières associations consacrées à l'étude scientifique des civilisations et langues orientales. C'est un des premiers à proposer l'idée d'un lien entre les langues européennes et indiennes, qui seront nommé plus tard langues indo-européennes. Petit accident à la coiffe supérieure. Il semble manquer le faux titre, mais le feuillet d'errata est bien présent.‎

E poi trovare il modo di procurarsi quello che più gli manca: un po'di carne da mettere sotto i denti. Ma non dovrà sforzarsi troppo, giacché a offrirgli, con entusiastica e spontanea generosità, tutto ciò di cui ha bisogno saranno le donne, nessuna delle quali sembra poter resistere al suo fascino. Se "Epepe" si presentava da subito come un incubo, "Tempi felici" appare sin dalle prime battute come un divertissement - quasi uno schnitzleriano girotondo. Solo in una commedia, infatti, farsi crescere un paio di baffi può sottrarre un giovane ebreo alle terribili Croci frecciate nell'Ungheria dell'inverno del 1945; e solo in una commedia il giovanotto in questione può vivere le sei drammatiche settimane dell'assedio dei Sovietici, in una città squassata dai bombardamenti e ridotta allo stremo, come una parentesi beata, deliziosamente propizia agli amori clandestini, riuscendo a farsi proteggere, nutrire e coccolare da prostitute e borghesi, da giovani e da vecchie - e perfino da una miliziana fascista. ‎8vo, 390pp. The straggly beard, the hooked nose, the bag of coins, and gaudy apparel - the religious artists of medieval Christendom had no shortage of virulent symbols for identifying Jews. Yet, hateful as these depictions were, the story they tell is not as simple as it first appears. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, Lipton argues that these visual stereotypes were neither an inevitable outgrowth of Christian theology nor a simple reflection of medieval prejudices. Instead, she maps out the complex relationship between medieval Christians' religious ideas, social experience, and developing artistic practices that drove their depiction of Jews from benign, if exoticized, figures connoting ancient wisdom to increasingly vicious portrayals inspired by (and designed to provoke) fear and hostility. At the heart of this lushly illustrated and meticulously researched work are questions that have occupied scholars for ages-why did Jews becomes such powerful and poisonous symbols in medieval art? Why were Jews associated with certain objects, symbols, actions, and deficiencies? And what were the effects of such portrayals-not only in medieval society, but throughout Western history? After the war and back in Prague she and her husband joined the Communist Party. In doing so, they believed that socialism offered a genuine alternative to the injustice, racism and war of capitalism. Yet under the Soviet Stalinist version of socialism; their idealism was gradually undermined. Her husband was tried and executed in a party purge. The Prague Sping of 1968 gave her a brief hope that a genuine Democratic Socialist society might be possible. This hope was extinguished by the intervention of Soviet armed forces. This then is a remarkable work of hope in the face of horror and defeat. The book itself is in a good overall condition. It is aformer library copy.
