Con il nome di Ermanno l'ex-Ebreo scrive in latino il racconto della sua conversione, l'Opusculum de conversione sua, dopo le Confessioni di Sant'Agostino una delle prime autobiografie comparse in Occidente. Ma, si chiedono gli storici, si tratta di un racconto vero o fittizio? Fu solo propaganda confezionata dai chierici cristiani? L'autore di questo libro ribalta la questione: vero o fittizio, il racconto pur autobiografico è espressione corale di una comunità, limpido specchio della mentalità e della cultura del suo tempo. Il sogno che cambiò Ermanno lebreo Elena Loewenthal, Tuttolibri - La Stampa Ermanno è realmente esistito? E nel caso in cui questa domanda trovi una risposta affermativa, è lui l'autore dell'Opusculum? Tali interrogativi, insieme ad altri che portano con sé, sono da decenni il tormento di studio per molti esperti. Queste immagini, cui i familiari non danno troppa importanza, sono invece il preludio e l'annuncio di una conversione al cristianesimo non folgorante, anzi: è un lungo cammino, tortuoso e coscienzioso, che Ermanno compie verso il sacerdozio che l'aspetta. E di cui racconta, con autentico piglio letterario, nel suo Opusculum: «Molti religiosi, sia uomini che donne, mi domandano spesso come mi sia convertito dal giudaismo alla grazia del Cristo, e se abbia sofferto delle tentazioni del Nemico maligno nei primi tempi della mia conversione. in realtà, non mi sono convertito con la facilità con la quale vediamo molti infedeli, ebrei o pagani, convertirsi alla fede cattolica con un cambiamento improvviso e imprevisto. la mia conversione, al contrario, ha conosciuto le tentazioni, le cui tempeste furono sempre più frequenti nei primi tempi, le insidie numerose dell'antico Nemico che vi si opponeva, gli ondeggiamenti più lunghi e le pene più grandi», scrive Ermanno nel prologo al suo racconto. Scrive? È per l'appunto intorno a questo dubbio che la critica discute. Questa storia, e il suo protagonista, sono una realtà del passato o una costruzione intellettuale? Un caso di propaganda apostolica? Quanta verità, quanta finzione si trovano nel racconto? Con Ermanno e il suo opuscolo si cimenta ora anche un grande storico francese, Jean-Claude Schmitt, considerato l'erede di Jacques Le Goff e della sua scuola storiografica che ha fondato un modo nuovo di guardare al Medioevo. Il suo saggio La conversione di Ermanno l'Ebreo. Autobiografia, storia, finzione è un'analisi a tutto campo: strettamente filologica (in appendice la traduzione dell'opuscolo di Ermanno), storico-documentaria. Collana di studi religiosi. problema delle origini della Kabbalà, forma della mistica e della teosofia ebraica che sembra sorgere a un tratto nel secolo XIII, è uno dei più complessi e importanti nella storia religiosa dell'ebraismo dopo la distruzione del Tempio. Il volume sintetizza i risultati di oltre quarant'anni di lavoro. Le accurate e sistematiche ricerche compiute dall'autore sui manoscritti del periodo arcaico non solo dissipano diffidenze troppo a lungo diffuse per pregiudizio razionalistico o entusiasmo romantico, ma rinnovano completamente gli studi sul movimento. L'approfondito lavoro filologico e storico-critico condotto sulle fonti ha consentito di rilevare che il "Séfer Bahir" - testo fondamentale della Kabbalà prima dello "Zòhar" (fine del XIII secolo) - è redatto su materiali più antichi, tutti con caratteristiche gnostiche. Proprio attraverso il "Bahir", il pensiero gnostico mitopoietico ha fatto la sua ricomparsa all'interno del giudaismo e ha caratterizzato per secoli quella che oggi, grazie agli studi di Scholem, può essere definita, religiosamente e culturalmente, la corrente più vitale e originale del giudaismo. In antitesi a studi precedenti, l'autore sottolinea inoltre che la Kabbalà è nata da bisogni religiosi interni al giudaismo e non da apporti culturali esterni. In questo senso è espressione genuina e profonda dell'anima ebraica e differisce in modo sostanziale dalla filosofia, nella quale l'apporto greco e arabo è stato invece determinante.
